Dunk failure? PC version

Sat Apr 09, 2005 1:27 pm

any of you guys experienced this?
when you are in a 10 points plus lead against the CPU team, your player just cant freaking dunk anymore, i mean they do dunk, but the ball will just bounce back out the rim.
this happened in every game i played, no matter in what game mode and no matter which team, player i used.

it really sucks when T-mac is on a fastbreak and cant dunk, the only way out is to stop under the rim and do a stupid shoot. some lay-up fails also.
it's like the CPU just wont let you score any more, untill after a while, the cpu team catches up, the dunking situation goes back to normal

i'm totally pissed at this

Yes, it's part of the comeback code that allows the CPU to challenge you by catching up. If you have CPU Assistance enabled, it happens even more frequently.

i really dont have this problem, even with lead, i can dunk, i mean dunks arent 100% in the game and in real life too so every now and then i do get a blooper but rare

It happens to me occasionally. But like Andrew said, it's hard coded into the game, so not much we can do about it.

One thing I've learned in Live is that you don't win games too early. By that I mean that a 30 point lead at the half isn't really going to mean much. Even if you play against the crappiest teams. Because more often than not, the CPU will get back in the game even if you bust your hand playing really tough D and taking wide-open jumpers with your best shooters.

That's why in games wherein my team is far superior to the CPU's, I just keep my team up by a couple of points, pacing my best five accordingly so they enter the game during the last six or so minutes with full stamina bars, then I can break the game wide open.

Have you boys ever played a real game of basketball??? I'm guessing not... You have to remember that the real NBA players are 1500 times better than you and this is a normal cause-effect relation in a game of basket ball...

If you are up by 30 points at half time in any game... You do relax and just don't give it that 110% anymore... So you get a little sloppy, but it doesn't matter as you are up as much as you are... There's always a comeback, the guys that are down usually get on some sort of a roll and try to catch up and maybe slice into the lead 10-15 points, but don't always get any closer than that and this with some very sorry teams playing... Think if the guys were good and the other team comes on a little bit more relaxed than they walked off into the half-time break... The guys that are down, will be playing with better attitude and energy and especially when they start to get some baskets, it's really hard to stop them then...

Basketball is a game of streaks... Unless you really outmatch your opponent, the opponent will have it's share of streaks and that's just a fact... You say it's hard coded and it's a bad thing that it's hard coded... It's the nature of the beast! It's the soul of the game, it's what basket ball is made of...

Just read some recap's at NBA.com and tell me that the streaks don't show up in them... And I can show you who's a liar. There are times when teams exchange baskets, but usually the other teams hot and the other is not and they run out of steam on the streak and it's time for the other team to take over... A streak might be 40 seconds long, or 4 minutes long, but it's usually a streak of some sort... Like TMac going for 13 points in less than 30 seconds... That's one helluva streak... Spurs couldn't do anything about it, he just had the hot hand at the end and usually a game with a collection of as talented players as the NBA guys are it's usually who gets the better streaks in the fourth quarter usually walks away with the win too... That's why Ben Gordon has been so huge for the Bulls this season... Bulls would probably have 15 less wins this season if he hadn't stepped up to get the streaks going in the fourth quarters...

It comes down to so very little... Don't ask me why some baskets start a streak or why not, but some do and some don't... The guys that usually start the streaks with their great defense or offense are the guys you really want to keep in your team.

Streaks apply to shooting, not dunks/layups (IRL). Dunks/layups are totally independent of streaks, which is why any good coach will tell you if you're missing your jump shots, go inside and get a layup to get yourself going again.

Yesterday i was apparently up by too much because AK47 missed 9 dunks in a row :P

Maybe you play an all-dunk game (+ 3-pointers) and don't take mid-range jump shots.

Thats sorta what I do cause i've got Vince and Jefferson with Jordans dunk package (Y)

Are you sure that you have 'COMPUTER ASSIST' set on off!!! Or whatever that is, I can never remember is AI assist or Computer assist...

IF IT IS ON! Then it's no miracle that you keep on missing since it is what keeps games close...

And Kirilenko isn't really a top notch dunker, but 9 in a row... Try something else... He's got a pretty good jump shot.

And STREAKS APPLY TO EVERYTHING THERE IS TO DO WITH BASKET BALL! Coaches tell you to go close to the hoop to get a lay-up because it's easier to make, probably the easiest shot... Not because the opponent is on a streak and we have to cut it and the only way to do it is to get a lay-up... Coaches try to get the offense going and the easiest way to do that is to get some easy buckets and that can be done by the lay-ups and dunks... Streaks effect everything...
