Excel works better than Access, but DB Commander and the NBA Live 2005 Editor are safer than both of them. It's better to create players from within the game first then edit them externally.

Go to the home page for NLSC. Click on Nba Live 2005 under NBA Lives. Look for the DBF editing guides. Players.dbf and appearance.dbf are the files to edit. Like Andrew said, create the player within the game first. You are better off using the NBA Live 2005 Editor. Excel causes problems for some users.
