playing Pau

Tue Apr 05, 2005 5:22 pm

Got the opportunity to sign Pau Gasol on a new dynasty i started.

So how do you run plays for a player like this? Back down and shoot out of it? Use the hook? Have him drive? Is he a face the basket type or should he post up?

I noticed he does have a very high FG% but very low 3P%, which is an odd mix i'm not sure how to best play. It's definitely not like someone like Radmanovic where he can bomb away from anywhere on court.

Tue Apr 05, 2005 6:49 pm

i rekon u play him like duncan. you can shoot the short jumper really well and has good enough handles to do a drive but he lacks some strength. this is just from experience with him, just play around with him and you ll figure it out!

Tue Apr 05, 2005 7:32 pm

Yeah play him out on the high post I think. He's also pretty athletic so he can run the break aswell.

Wed Apr 06, 2005 1:09 pm

now there Jae, i thought you liked keith van horny, now why are leaning towards Pau,

ON TOPIC: you can use Pau as a SF type of player....beat the big guys off the dribble and swoosh yer way to the basket

Wed Apr 06, 2005 1:21 pm

you shouldve PM'ed me for this one

since they gave gasol handles in the game, you can use him inside the 3 point line and use freestyle to try and drive to the basket or if you like to post up, he cant back down that many people, so you would have to gain position as close as you can and do the fake one way and go the other way hook shot. it works mostly everytime when he is close enough to the goal. he can also shoot the midrange jumper.

I still maintain that KVH is the best white player in NBA Live 2005.

Yeah, right... *cough*...dirk...*cough*

Wed Apr 06, 2005 7:29 pm

KVH is better than Dirk in NBA Live I think. Especially since it's easier to get him.

Wed Apr 06, 2005 10:58 pm

What about Peja? J-Kidd? Even Ilgauskas!
Can you please give us some arguments, I think I've never ever heard anyone speak positively about Van Horn before

Wed Apr 06, 2005 11:00 pm

Dirk is the best in NBA Live and in Real! Van Horn sucks, i just can't get no Points with him!

Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:00 am

van horn's not bad at all. when i was playing with the mavs, nowitzki went down in the 2nd quarter and van horn stepped it up.. he's really great at grabbing rebounds and hitting pull up 3's..i finished with like 21 points and 10 boards or something like that

Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:20 am

I'm a defender of KVH, but in NBA Live I prefer Nowitzki. In an Online League, I destroyed all the teams with Dirk, specially shooting near the basketball and shooting three points in the final seconds. I also like KVH a lot, shoots very well and, as Jae says, is easy to get him.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:06 am

When i have Dirk in my Dynasty he always does the most Blocks and Rebounds! But i make my Points with Great Dunkers ;)

Thu Apr 07, 2005 11:02 am

i just traded Van Horn for Peja.....man why didn't i think about that before......
my reason: there are times Van Horn just sucks..especially at crunch time..he mad me lost a total of 4 games already....

and in my 2006-2007 dynasty Peja is 84........and KVH is 77

and oh yeah Pau is 88

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:03 pm

I was averaging 37ppg with KVH while he was playing alongside Dirk (25ppg). That's my argument.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:09 pm

my van horn averages about 19ppg....but he is no crunch time player, peja is.....that's why the trade

a 37ppg for van horn coud be a direct result of him played as a ballhog.....argue with me you will :)

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:14 pm

Nah I honestly didn't ballhog with him, it was a matter of using my quick guards to drive and dish. I dish out to Van Horn and he'll hit a standing jump shot from anywhere, while shooting around 60+% on superstar mode. It wasn't ball hogging, he hardly got the ball on the offensive end, I never used him to dribble around or any of that he just got the ball, shot, and it went in.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:34 pm

you have been honest lately huh :?:
to be honest too. i liked van horn's shooting touch.....i played him the way you did....just his clutch performances were not that good though.....so the management has decided that he has to go in my dynasty....
the players before my van horn era are:
PAU GASOL-----didn't have the range i expected him to have.....he's a low post player not a SF.
REGGIE MILLER---very good trade for PAU, too bad he retired after one year...

now unto the post Van Horn Era:
PEJA STOJAKOVICHZHSHSHG------i saw his ratings and compared them to van horns......i added a few player to the mix....and blam......the dumb kings happily accepted....i surely bust those guys...

Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:42 pm

I'm not really a big fan of Gasol in this game, he did come up with some HUGE clutch defensive stops for me in one game (4 blocks, all on Kobe in the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter against the Lakers in the play-offs) but offensively didn't really do much. Odom's good but he's too slow, Dirk can't dribble at all... I did score 50 with Jonothan Bender once, I guess I just like tall guys who can shoot.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 5:40 pm

Dirk is automatic from the field... He ain't much of a banger, but just give him the ball and put it up... He'll make the shot...

And he seems to be where the rebounds fall too... I've got Chris Bosh and Dirk teamed up as my front court and Dirk collects more boards than Bosh...

KVH isn't such a big player... As you all know, the guys don't shoot the ball the same way. I mean that there are some differences in the strokes and that's what all this is about... I can hit anything with Dirk, but cannot hit anything with Redd... Have tried, but just can't seem to hit that net. Same goes with Korver... I just can't find the rhythymn for that guy. He's got good ratings, but I just can't make a shot with him...

I think the guys playing great with KVH are tuned to his shooting style and have trouble with someone else... I think this is why some people can't seem to score with one guy and another guy who's just as good or even worse is hitting everything...

I like Gasol... He's tall and long, can score, can block and can move... He's just great.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 5:44 pm

so i assumed, we, the Van Horns, played with cpu assist off.....because we use the feel good "stroke" compared to the ratings?

anyways good points there metsis (Y)

That's a great point, I had the exact same problem for Korver despite his 90+ rating from 3. KVH's shooting stroke just seems so smooth to me on the game and it makes it easier to shoot, whereas with Peja I find his a bit more difficult to shoot with.

Thu Apr 07, 2005 9:15 pm

No self respecting basket ball fan plays this game with 'CPU assist on'...

You "Van Horns" have just a better touch with the shooting with his form of shot...

No matter how much you adjust your game, the moment when you release your shot counts for something... With CPU assist on, it counts for more and with CPU assist off, it calculates more on ratings base, but no matter what you do, the release matters, every time...

And COOLmac@... CPU assist is what makes the stroke matter more, so with CPU assist off, it counts more on the ratings and you can't just start shooting them threes with anyone... So you actually by your own definition be playing the game with 'CPU assist on' rather than off...

But this is pointless... The guys shoot differently and some people find it easier to shoot with a certain style and some find it easier with another style... It's a matter of familiarity and what comes to you naturally...

So, someone could be averaging 30 points with Korver, while I struggle to score 10 even with his high shooting ratings...

And the release is everything... Ask any good shooter how important it is to get a shot of just the right way for him... I can tell you that if you leave me open on three point line and let me shoot my 'shot' you'll just be better leaving home already cause the game is over... I get left open, I drain it, every time, or as close to every time as one can get... Like over 80% of the shots... And thus rarely I get the opportunity to put up just that shot. I usually have to rush it a little bit and that hurts the percentages quite hard... Release is everything... If you got time, you can make it easy, but if you have to rush it, you can't make anywhere near the open shot percentages...

speaking of big men i love using lamar odom in my season.. i pretty much give him the ball downlow all the time and have people cut to the basket

he's also quick at drawing fouls and has an explosive first step.. i can hit the occassional 3 with him and the 10 foot jumpshots.. hes second in the team with points right now at 25, first in boards with 12 and second in assists with 5 or so

On C my favorites are Jermaine O'Neal and Amare Stoudemire! Theyre fast, they are Strong and even against Shaq you can score! Just run against Shaq and Dunk it in. On PF i like Dirk and Bosh the most!
