Hawks 2005-06 Off-Season Recap

After another disappointing season, the Hawks made a drastic change with their franchise. First they fired GM Billy Knight as Hawks General Manager and named Dominique Wilkins their new General Manager. They also relieved Coach Mike Woodson as Hawks Head Coach but will still be in Hawk front office to help in scouting. The new head coach will be name before the NBA draft.

Hawks, having the 2nd worst record in NBA, had 20% to get the no.1 pick. But after the draft lottery Hawks retained their position and will pick second in the draft.

Image

Then, Hawks held a mini- rookie camp and invited 15 players to show their skills in front of the Hawks owner, general manager and coaching staff. All invitee gave a good account of their stuff and gave the Hawks front office hard time on who will be their pick in the coming draft. They again invited 7 of these 15 players and played 1-on-1 against Hawks players.

Image

Then it time for each NBA teams to re-sign their own free-agent players. Hawks have 4 free-agent players headed by Tyronn Lue. But Hawks decided to let go of this player and have a chance to test the free agent market.

Image

Before the NBA draft, Hawks held a presscon and announced their new head coach. After a brief introduction by GM Wilkins, Coach Lenny Wilkens came out of the room and was announced to be Hawks next coach. Coach Wilkens coached the Hawks in the 90's and was playoff team then. He will try to bring the Hawks to the playoff.

During the NBA draft, Hawks picked NLSC ballers Russel Santos. This was a shocking development with lots of proven players like Andrew Bogut, Martynas Andriuskevicius, Chris Taft and Marvin Williams still available in the draft. Chris Paul was the 1st overall pick.

NBA Draft
1. Chris Paul PG Milwaukee Bucks
2. Russel Santos PG Atlanta Hawks
3. Andrew Bogut C Orlando Magic
4. Leo Reyes PG Utah Jazz
5. Martynas Andriuskevicius C New York Knicks
6. Marvin Williams SF Cleveland Cavaliers
7. Sam Anurak SG Toronto Raptors
8. Nemanja Aleksandrov SF New Orleans Hornets
9. Makis Hassakis C Los Angeles Clippers
10. Chris Taft PF Sacramento Kings
11. Andrew Watson SG Charlotte Bobcats
12. Florian Ruf PG Portland Trailblazers
13. Fran Vazquez PF Seattle Supersonics
14. Generic Rookie
15. Tiago Splitter PF Washington Wizards
16. Generic Rookie
17. Generic Rookie
18. Raymond Felton PG boston Celtics
19. Generic Rookie
20. Generic Rookie
21. Generic Rookie
22. Generic Rookie
23. Jing Xu SG Denver Nuggets
24-30 Generic Rookie

Hawks forfeited their 2nd round pick (32nd overall)

During the free agent signing, Hawks decided to get a center and power forward. At the center position, only 1 player standout, Stromile Swift. Hawks management made an offer despite knowing most players don't want to sign with the Atlanta Hawks.

But after 2 days, they received a message from Swift.
Image

Hawks again made a better and higher offer. Then after 2 days, Swift's agent sent a message.
Image

At the power forward position, Zach Randolph led all players with high rating. But Hawks decided not to get Randolph. Instead, they made a sure move, they offer a big contract to Kwame Brown, a player according to everyone was a bust. But Hawks will try to gamble on him and even overpay him just to sign with the team.
Image

Unable to sign Swift and passing on some of the free agent players, Hawks was force to continue on using Al Harrington on power forward position and making Kwame Brown their starting center. With this set-up, Hawks try to look for their bench players, starting with a back-up small forward. And able to sign this player, again somehow overpaying him.
Image

Coach Wilkens then made a sentimental move, signing one of his former players during Hawks glory days...
Image

Then Hawks signed a player who only love to play basketball and never mind being the last player to come off the bench. And when he plays, he plays with full of energy and give 100% effort night in and night out.
Image

The Hawks almost completed their line-up but when they saw this guy still available and unsigned, they made an offer and luckily he agreed to play for the Hawks.
Image

After the free agent signing period, Hawks decided not to make any more changes and happy on how the team shape up. But New Orleans Hornets made an offer and Hawks studied the trade. In the end, they made the trade sighting it will only make the team more talented.

9. Mikas Hassakis C Los Angeles Clippers

It's Makis actually, not Mikas... I'm not Lithuanian or Finnish

Clippers, hey? Drafted at no 9? heh, figures, only the Clips would pick the second coming of Scott Pollard/Adonal Foyle hybrid with a Top 10 pick

How much money am I making, anyway?

Good signings and with that trade that brought in Jacobsen you got a REALLY good shooter. Get Ariza some playing time in the season too. (Y)

wow, in the other dynasty i was 7th, this one 23... what a drop. but the change in position and playing style probably dropped it. still, playing with melo and stuff should be interesting.

maybe i got lotsa potential

well, guess I'm in Charlotte to stay....

and jxuusa, the Nuggets do need a SG, so you could be the steal of the draft....behind me of course

so far micchy_boy, I really like where you are going with this dynasty....I don't care too much for game recaps and so on in dynasties, rather the movements, the gm work, the drafting and all other stuff....interested to see how this will continue....

as for your draft pick, unbelievable....you passed on Bogut AND Marvin Williams....Hawks' fans will be turning in their graves

You were right Micchy, this dynasty is not going to be realistic at all... just like you said...

I will analyse your management changes from a Hawks fan point of view... and please take it with humour only...

First, you fired GM Billy Knight who ownership currently like and have no plan on replacing anytime soon (personal opinion only). But lets say they did fire him.
You replaced Knight with owner Dominque Wilkins (one of the 9 owners of the team), I mean even Herb Kohl in Milwaukee has Larry Harris as GM (and his son Dan as assistant) now why would a owner who already has supreme control want to take care of all the little details that a GM job entails... even Jordan in Washington and whats his name in Dallas has a GM... but lets say Wilkins became the first ever Owner/GM in NBA history...

Second, you fired Mike Woodson, who was the top assitant coach to Larry Brown in Detroit championship last year, and you fired him after only one season with a terrible terrible terrible team. No fair. But lets say they did fire him... or he quit in discuss... why would he take a scouting job when he can most likely get his job back in Detroit and attempt to win a few more championships?... or an assistant job on another team at the very least...

And then, you bring back old school, old methods, and just damn old - over the hill - Lenny Wilkens, who was coach of the year on this very team 20 years ago...

As a Hawks fan, if I was reading this in the paper tomorrow. I would  .

Management wise (N) but your offseason moves (players) (Y) are interesting and realistic.

Again, take it only with humour as I will enjoy reading your dynasty.

Sorry about that, i already edit it....
With only Kaman as a decent center for the Clips i think they will try to gamble on you...

RipHamilton32 wrote:Good signings and with that trade that brought in Jacobsen you got a REALLY good shooter. Get Ariza some playing time in the season too. (Y)

thanks, korver and jacobsen will give me 2 shooter to compliment and back-up guys like smith and childress who are more of a slasher-type of players.
i try but remember i will only play the 4th period of every game.

pHLo wrote:where does zach play in ur dynasty ? has he resigned with the blazers ? who will start at PG ? Stoudamire was also an Free Agent..

Zach re-signed with the Blazers...
well Damon signed with Hornets and Van Exel goes to Bobcats which left Telfair and you as their point guards... who will start??? just stay tune

it has something to do with the ranking, your a top 5 in my Lakers dynasty while your a top 15 here...
well i think nuggets is the right team for you, they need a SG badly..

Sit wrote:Good stuff! Bogut + Dwight + Franchise + Hill + Christie = (Y) (Y) (Y)

thanks,
that line-up look impressive, hope it wil proudce more wins.

The X wrote:I squeaked into the lottery :D although I find it a bit ironic that I ended up in Charlotte :?

yeah...
about your position, your SG, the pics was taken before i edit your position....
well this is more ironic... the first time i done the off-season, your a SF there and i will pick no.1 when i went to the draft and you were pick by Sacramento at no. 10. so i decided to re-start the off-season and change your position to SG. then you were pick by Bobcats and decided to stick with it.

Sit wrote:Its heavensent X.. u are their messiah!

 , it will be different coz in his dynasty he was a 2nd round pick while here he's a lottery pick. just wait for X to raise the ROY trophy

ironic? i never know your a Raps fans. Well yes you and mo pete will fight for the starting SG.
thanks for the pics, i'l send 2 or 3 pics okey..

yes your bobcats for life
your right X, nuggets find their starting Sg in jxuusa.

thanks, yes i also enjoy how this dynasty are shpaing up.
well i need to pick myself. during draft lottery i was hoping i slide down to no. 5 or lower picking myself will not be a little shocking...

Goldberg wrote:You were right Micchy, this dynasty is not going to be realistic at all... just like you said...

blah blah blah........

Again, take it only with humour as I will enjoy reading your dynasty.

well it only show im not a Hawks fans and dont know much about this franchise.
Remember I'm a die hard LAKERS fans for all my life so I only know about the Lakers.

well the management move will not be remember once the dynasty start its more on how i make rosters changes and player movements.

but thanks for the info any way... yeah it look humorous for a Hawks fans point of view...

just be happy that you were drafted by an NBA team :D ....we don't want anymore Steve Francis' in the league :x

it seems like all NLSC players ended up with teams that needed them :o

I'm looking forward to pairing up with Nick Van Exel to push Bobcats into the playoffs....

and micchy_boy, that's even more ironic, that I ended up being taken by Kings before Bobcats....and I like both teams, so it's all good :D

Good luck on your dreams... i also applied the 75% salary cap in bobcats so expect them to struggle here.
i think its has someting to do that all NLSC ballers were projected to be a lottery pick.
yes the Kings stuff was also ironic...

this dynasty as i said will be diffrent in my Lakers dynasty...
So all NLSC Ballers in my Lakers might not be included here unless you apply for this dynasty....

So it will be FIRST COME FIRST SERVE service....
The first 5 Ballers to apply through PM will be included in the next season and so on...

So Sit PM....
