US Life Expectancy to drop

Postby Ataraxia on Fri Mar 18, 2005 12:18 am

By their calculations — disputed by skeptics as shaky and overly dire — within 50 years obesity likely will shorten the average life span of 77.6 years by at least two to five years. That’s more than the impact of cancer or heart disease, said lead author S. Jay Olshansky, a longevity researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This is kinda bad.....I still cant get why Americans have such a problem with obesity with all those advertisments and campaigns showing why u shouldnt be spending your life in McDonald's.

That's because the advertisements and campaigns from McDonald's supercede all other anti-fast food ads :P

It starts with the children, and they need to be educated about obesity. I'm actually doing a design project relating to social issues, and I picked child obesity as one.

We learned about that in Health, and more than half of the kids in my Health class are obese. It was hysterical to see the look on some of their faces  Before you try to turn that into an insult against me I weigh 90 pounds.

I'm sort of like sbhz, I can't sit still for too long. It's not like if you're obese you have to starve yourself and run 6 miles every day (if you're still young), you just have to have things to keep you busy. I can eat Mcdonald's 2-3 times a week (on very few occasions) and still be fit because I just run a lot, play basketball, stay busy.

The problem is that most of the kids in my Health class are nerds who can't grasp the concept of team sports.

You're not even close to near obese. You're only five pounds heavier than the guideline for the "right" weight for age and size. I'm 185 lbs and 5'11" and I'm heavier than average, but I lift weights, and that doesn't make me obese. The guidelines don't take into account athletes, and judging by your pictures, you don't look overweight at all.

no you're not obese...it's what gym poeple want to make you think so......i'm 5'9 and i'm 145..........but i do build muscles too in gym weight lifting........if you have done so yourself then your far from being obese......the first signs of obesity is a big stomach. if you started to see a round mold of fat in the stomach area then thats a concern.......if you have great abs and biceps like cyanide then you're not fat......just healthy (Y)

youre not overweigh tor obese at all.. i'm 5'8 and 160 and people tell me i look fine.. unless you live in africa or something, that's pretty standard for your height.. infact you should be weighing in at the 165-170 lb range

6ft1 200lbs here and trying to get bigger

You can't tell shit by weight. You have to know the person activity level too.

I go to the gym and eat extremely clean.

One of the same, here. 6' 1", well maybe 6' 2", and 209lbs. Gym keeps you in shape if you show consistency, and eat regularly and cleanly.

Just don't ovedo it at the gym, or you just might get too much muscle bulk for your own liking... after I saw my biceps in a photo of me by the beach two years ago I decided to cut down on lifting.. I was getting all balooned up... Now I'm trimmer and more presentable...

As far as food is concerned, I'm 24 years old and have been completely avoiding fried food and sweets for the past 6 years... Well, maybe a chocolate a month or something, but discipline in food consumption really helps.

Also, if you work out and try to get bigger, I would recommend using a daily exercise routine no more than 60 minutes long, and eat 5 - 7 small to medium meals a day, if you have the time or inclination that is...

And a final thing. I started working out at 16 and have been doing it ever since... I am now working full time, sometimes even on weekends, but I still find the time for exercise, 1.5 hours per day minimum. Those who work out can understand what kind of an addiction self-improvement can be, and those who do not are missing out on a great way to improve themeselves physically and mentally... So my advice would be to always find time to work your body out, no matter what, it's a great boost in confidence and mental strenth...
