So the news that police had arrested Gibian, 18, a Hauppauge High School senior, in the killing of his stepfather, Scott Nager, a retired New York City police officer, with a samurai sword Sunday left them dumbfounded. Gibian is being held without bail on a second-degree murder charge.
Police were called to MacArthur Boulevard in Hauppauge about 1 p.m., after Laura Nager discovered her husband dead on the couch, said Suffolk homicide squad Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick. She told police she thought an intruder had killed him.
But detectives said Gibian slashed his stepfather with one of the swords Nager had among his antique collection. Nager had been sleeping on the couch when Gibian first struck him with the 3-foot blade on his neck and cheek, Fitzpatrick said. As Nager rose, Gibian delivered a second blow to the back of the neck. "That's what killed him," Fitzpatrick said.

Gibian had revealed to a co-worker at a Hauppauge restaurant that all was not well between him and his stepfather. He had shown up several times for work upset, with tears in his eyes, said Davin Nielsen, a waiter at Pace's Steak House in Hauppauge. Gibian never said what came between the two, only that he felt his stepfather was emotionally abusive toward him, Nielsen said. And one of Gibian's relatives yesterday described the teen as "obviously ... pushed to the limit."
