freestyle control without two analog pads

OK, here's the deal:
The game says that if i don't have two analog sticks i can press the spin/crossover button and press a direction in order to "simulate" the right analog stick - needless to say, this does not work.
I tried it on my gamepad (sidewinder with just one movement pad and no analog sticks) and got nothing.
The main reason is for tossing in the slamdunk competition.
Is there any way to make this work or i just have to get a new gamepad for that matter?
