14 Kids suspended for Recording A Hip Hop Album

Postby SkipToMy_Lou on Mon Feb 14, 2005 8:08 pm

Allhiphop.com wrote:Fourteen high school students in Johnston, Rhode Island were suspended from school last week for recording a hip-hop album that administrators deemed vulgar and violent, according to the Associated Press. The students each received a five-day suspension and are required to perform community service and receive in-school sensitivity training once they return from their punishment. The group sold 50 copies of the album, which featured lines like “I just wanna grab the Glock and cock it back / kill everyone here, how ... is that,” before concerned parents contacted school officials. A first amendment attorney said of the situation: “School officials have a much stronger claim to jurisdiction even though the materials were created off-campus.” A report by the school superintendent is due this week.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech :?:

i don't agree with the lyrics of the song but the record was made off-campus though. i don't think it was right for the school to suspend them.

and jae's right with the freedom of speech thing. there are limitations to that afterall

In a way I agree, but I can't blame the school for taking a strong stance given some of the other gun related violence that's occurred in the not too distant past.

14 high school students working together,( 14, when I was in high school you put me around 13 other students I'd be damned if we'd being doing anything constructive), to produce and distribute their own music. Last time I checked high school was more than a day care but an institution put in place to prepare you to be able to make a way for yourself during life on your own. Now, they took in to context that rap music is hot right now and that there is a demand for it and came up with a way to make it profitable for them. These kids have got a leg up on probably all their peers and they're being punished for it.

Absolutely agree. Those lyrics are a thing to be concerned.
Of course they may be innocent blabber but there is also the posibility that some of those kids got dangerous ideas in their minds.
