NBA Rejects EA

Last week, Electronic Arts, the NFL, and Players Inc. sent shockwaves throughout the gaming industry as they announced an unprecedented five-year exclusivity partnership. But it looks like Electronic Arts had even bigger plans as they also bid on exclusive arrangements with the NBA. Sources have told me, however, that the NBA has rejected EA's initial offer.

One of the reasons is that the NBA Live series simply doesn't have a stranglehold on the market the way Madden has for years, so by signing an exclusive deal with EA, the NBA would actually be losing money. There are simply too many NBA video game properties that sell big units for the deal to make sense, from the ESPN NBA series to NBA Ballers to 989's games that are set to hit both the PS2 and PSP.

Thank God. As a fan of both ESPN and Live, I deserve a choice.

SHIT! I forgot about NBA Ballers!

NBA is doing the right thing.

Besides NBA Ballers is THE SHIT.

What song is that in your sig? I thought I had heard all the NBA Live songs?!

nba live 2000 :)

He quoted it wrong anyways. It's "NBA Live, when it's crunch time" not "for the first time".

It's one of those Rahzel songs off 2000.

I play NBA Live, NBA Street, and NBA Ballers so the NBA made a good choice.

good. i wouldn't want ea to have a monopoly on nba video games

Thu Dec 23, 2004 12:41 am

same here...there games wouldn't get any better...no competition

Thu Dec 23, 2004 5:26 am

If they got a monopoly, we'll be seeing mediocre effort from EA for the next five years. It's good to have competition.

really, really good news. It was a little more "legitimate" for Madden NFL as this game is really a quality game. That's not really the case for NBA Live.

I wouldn't see a problem for EA getting the exclusive from NBA... I get no other NBA games for the PC anyway so it wouldn't be that much different. And they would improve the game like they have always done... They don't want to make the same game over and over... Atleast they shouldn't.

I still don't get all gripes about Live 2005... I really love it, it's the best Live... Even better than 2000... The game is actually good and it is quite realistic and offers a challenge. What more could you ask for?

I just don't get it... EA is the only company that bothers to do their NBA games for the PC and that's why they rock and that's why I wouldn't mind seeing them make an exclusive deal...

I totally agree with you, Live 05 is great. But I am someone who like variety. SOme years I buy both LIVE and 2K series. It just feels good to play a different basketball game with a different atmosphere. Competition is always better than a monopoly from customers point of view. I think is better this way

You see though, the money isn't in the PC version. Way more people have consoles than PC's or both. Just because you get NBA Live for PC doesn't mean jack to anyone else. That's just one person. I wouldn't really care myself, but there wouldn't be any other NBA games like Jam, Ballerz, ESPN etc. NBA Live isn't good enough yet to be #1.

yes they shouldn't make the same thing over and over again, but they will if there is no COMPETITION.

with the breakout year espn 2k5 has had, i'll be looking forward to nba live 2006. should have to fight more to get recognition.

Sun Dec 26, 2004 2:22 am

Next year will be a brawl for the best because ESPN did have some good improvement IMO.

Sun Dec 26, 2004 3:32 am

nba ballers is so ghetto, the guys jump 5 feet above the rim lol

Exclusive

Tue Dec 28, 2004 2:13 pm

Exclusive rights show that EA has money. It does not strangle the video game industry even where EA has those rights.

If a game had superior game play and no names in it, would you play?

Tue Dec 28, 2004 8:49 pm

theres no limits saying u cant play console games on the PC.

But I dont get ESPN 2K5 here so I havent tried to play it using "the method".

Anyway good cause Live is still quite weak.....I think this will really pump up EA and ESPN to really show whose dominant....ESPN will try to stop EA from making a deal with the NBA while EA will try and make a game so good that the NBA will think again.

Very interesting indeed.

good thing for the NBA. Unlike ESPN NFL 2k5, Sega actually makes a solid ESPN NBA Game that pushes NBA Live to its limits. Definate NBA Live supporter, but until SEGA screws things up, this is a good decision by the NBA.
