Importance of updated rosters

I was wondering if having exact NBA rosters is top priority for everyone. Personally I think it's more fun to tweak the rosters for personal enjoyment. I can't wait to create some stalwart favorites who have since retired such as Chris Gatling and Antoine Carr, and having them play with some of the newer more exciting players like Jay Williams, etc. By the way, does anyone happen to know if Gatling is in the game?
