Potentially stupid question...

Guys,
I bought an el-cheapo graphics card today because I wanna atleast see the courts with live 05. (Fuckin EA! ) I got an Asus radeon 9200 se 128mb. Anyway, I plugged it in but the monitor doesn't turn on, so I plugged the monitor into the graphics card slot, and still nothing? Did I miss a step? Is there not enough power or something to run the new graphics card? I know pretty much zero about this stuff...

computer's a p4 2.8, 256 ram, windows xp professional. The monitor's an ibm one that came with my old pc, model E54. Before I try mucking around with it more, I wanted to check here

any suggestions much appreciated!

hmm...i think my dad's computer had a similar problem
when we bought it brand new, i didnt buy the dell monitor with it cuz he had a flat panel already, well i plugged it in but nothing turned on so i messed with the plug a lil and it finally turned on...but if i restart or somethin, it wouldnt turn bak on and i would have to mess with the plug again, then i lowered the refresh rate on the monitor and now everything works perfect...dont kno if it will do the same for u but u can always try

I tried messing with the refresh rate, and yeah I can get the monitor to turn on but when I restart or turn off the computer, it won't turn back on and I have to play with the plug, then it randomly decides when it wants to turn on.

The system won't detect the card either, and when I try to install the drivers the install program can't find the device! If I plug the monitor into the video card sometimes the screen turns on, windows is displayed, and then it crashes. No idea what's going on. Everything is plugged in as per the instructions. I'll have to dig around to see if I can find something on the net. In the mean time if anybody has any other suggestions...

are you sure your card is plugged in correctly?
also, remove al previous graphic drivers and then install Ati's newest.

are u running 2 cards??? like ur new one and a integrate graphic card???

Hey, yeah I have onboard graphics. I've tried to un-install those drivers but they come back right after I reboot. I've tried disabling, and it says that the integrated graphics are disabled, but the new card still doesn't come up, and obviously I can't rip out the itegrated graphics card . I wasn't sure, so I swapped the card for a radeon 9550 and still have the same problems. The motherboard must be the problem. I'm about to go look up some info on it... I found some tech forums so I'll search the motherboard and see, and I might call up the place where I got my pc and ask them. They told me I could upgrade the card later, and the guy where I bought the radeon also told me the motherboard should be alright. The radeon is firmly in the AGP slot, it just does not get detected by windows, and when I plug the monitor into it, it shits itself. I'll do a little more research and see what I'm gonna do. I've read a few tech boards and done a few searches, and the only thing I know for sure... is that the next geek I see on the street is in trouble!! The giga-byte website doesn't say too much about the motherboard. The FAQ I found somewhere says that installing another graphics card automatically disables the on board one... my ass.

No but seriously, I've un-installed the onboard graphics (every time I boot up it has found 'new hardware', that being the onboard graphics sis 650gx.) Even with that un-installed, windows does not detect the radeon card. It's firmly in the AGP slot, bios is set for the AGP slot to be the initial one read. Plugging the monitor into the radeon results in the monitor going blank. I really don't think there's anything else I can do. I tried downloading those ati catalyst drivers, and after installing the first part, my system became really unstable, could barely open anything, so I scrapped that because I need my pc. Maybe there's something wrong with the AGP slot! Tomorrow I'll probably go to the place where I got the computer and ask them to try. I guess I'll keep you guys informed for the purpose of those with similar problems. If it's the AGP slot, I forked out an extra $20 for a different card for nothing!

yea I was going to say by uninstalling the onboard from device manager and then restart and go to ur bios and change the card to AGP and that should work cuz thats what i did

i had the same problem as u...uninstalling the onboard card and restarting but it would always come back until i remember about the bios and then it worked... i forgot which order to do it tho, either uninstalling onboard first and then change bios to AGP or go to bios and change AGP first and then uninstall onboard

yeah I've had it set to AGP the whole time, and managed to uninstall the onboard graphics without them comming back every time I boot up, but still it doesn't detect the new card. It's probably a faulty AGP slot or something. I'm going to have it checked out tomorrow... hopefully it's just a faulty motherboard because it's still under warranty, and not something where I have to get a more advanced motherboard. I miss the days of running nba live on the onboard graphics!

Just thought I'd update... everything's working fine now. I took the PC back to the place where I got it. The friendly fella there tried the radeon 9550 and found the same problem I was having. He then tried two other cards from their shop which both worked! One of them was a radeon 9550 of a different brand and it worked. Funnily enough those first two cards which did not work were also two different brands, one of which is the same as the card I have now: an Asus. Anyway, it's all good now, I got a refund at one place and bought a card at the other. Thanks for the help
