Even though the more recent versions of Excel don't cause as many problems when editing dbf files, it's much safer to use DB Commander.

Use a DBF editor, It works. This is the best (I play and edit live since '97)

Excel didn't work since 2001 on, don't know this year.
My 2 cents,

so far i've been using microsoft excel to manipulate the roster files with success
the loading of the files works fine from my experience
however, i haven't tested the files in all aspects of the game just to let you know

The only thing you can't do in Excel is create new rows (fields). It automatically gets deleted once you exit the program.
