I will be starting my Memphis Grizzlies Dynasty as soon as I get my PC version of NBA Live 2005. I will be playing on 12 minute quarters so I can get realistic substituion pattersn the Grizzlies use. After playing with Fgrep's edited sliders, I think they fit me very well and the stats are pretty realistic for 12 min quarters. This dynasty will have more creative thought and better recaps than before. My next post will include a magazine along wtih a team depth analysis of the team. Following that will be the beginning of my season. I decided to go with the new format because I like things to be neat and I saw how neat some dynasties looked as well.

Grizzlies Depth Analysis 2004

Depth Analysis: Point Guards-Antonio Burks
Image
Position: G
Born: 02/25/80
Height: 6-0 / 1,83
Weight: 195 lbs. / 88,5 kg.
College: Memphis

2004-05 Outlook:
Locals fans rejoiced when the Grizzlies’ acquired Memphis native Burks. As mentioned above, he will compete with Troy Bell to find minutes behind incumbents Jason Williams and Earl Watson. While minutes might be hard to come by for both of them, much like Bell last season, Burks will gain valuable experience going against Williams and Watson in practice. His minutes may depend on what head coach Hubie Brown is looking for in a given situation, Bell is more of a scorer, while Burks’ strength is setting up the offense.

Depth Analysis: Point Guards-Earl Watson
Image
Position: G
Born: 06/12/79
Height: 6-1 / 1,85
Weight: 190 lbs. / 86,2 kg.
College: UCLA '01

2004-05 Outlook:
Watson should remain the primary backup to Jason Williams, playing approximately 20 minutes per game in Brown’s 10-man rotation and stepping in as a capable starter should Williams suffer an injury. Watson will be looking to get his shooting percentages back up to where they were in 2002-03, and expect him to remain among the top backup point guards in the league.

Depth Analysis: Point Guards-Jason Williams
Image
Position: G
Born: 11/18/75
Height: 6-1 / 1,85
Weight: 190 lbs. / 86,2 kg.
College: Florida '98

2004-05 Outlook:
Williams will again enter the season as the team’s starting point guard. He is the catalyst of the Grizzlies’ up-tempo offense, as along with James Posey, Mike Miller, Pau Gasol and Lorenzen Wright, the unit was one of the most exciting starting lineups in the league. Barring injury, he will get the bulk of the minutes at the point, and play a big role in the team’s attempt to get back to the playoffs.

Depth Analysis: Shooting Guards-Andre Emmett
Image
Position: G
Born: 08/27/82
Height: 6-5 / 1,96
Weight: 230 lbs. / 104,3 kg.
College: Texas Tech

2004-05 Outlook:
Emmett is an explosive scorer with excellent quickness and athleticism, and is a player the Grizzlies coveted. He and fellow rookie Antonio Burks are in the same position Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones were in last year: young players the team covets looking for playing time behind established veterans. Emmett and Jones will be competing for minutes behind Mike Miller and Bonzi Wells, but where Emmett will benefit this season is in practice, going head-to-head with Miller and Wells every day.

Depth Analysis: Shooting Guards-Dahntay Jones
Image
Position: G-F
Born: 12/27/80
Height: 6-6 / 1,98
Weight: 210 lbs. / 95,3 kg.
College: Duke '03

2004-05 Outlook:
As mentioned above, Jones will be competing with rookie Andre Emmett for minutes behind Mike Miller and Bonzi Wells. The coaches love Jones’s athleticism and explosiveness, but his field goal percentage has to improve for him to see increased minutes. Were his shooting struggles last season a case of rookie jitters? Since he didn’t get many minutes, he may have been pressing when he did get in the game. If that’s the case, any rookie nervousness will be gone this season, and his numbers, should improve.

Depth Analysis: Shooting Guards-Mike Miller
Image
Position: F-G
Born: 02/19/80
Height: 6-8 / 2,03
Weight: 218 lbs. / 98,9 kg.
College: Florida '02

2004-05 Outlook:
The big question with Miller entering this season is the health of his back, which has bothered him in each of the last two seasons. Miller says he’s healthy and ready to go, and should be in line for a big season with Bonzi Wells providing lots of competition for the starting two-guard spot. If Miller can avoid prolonged offensive droughts he might emerge as one of the most valuable players on the team. He’s a deadly three-point shooter, and also has the ability to drive to the hoop. With the passing ability he showed in place of Williams last season, Miller established himself as a triple-threat that not many teams can boast.

Depth Analysis: Shooting Guards-Bonzi Wells
Image
Position: G-F
Born: 09/20/76
Height: 6-5 / 1,96
Weight: 210 lbs. / 95,3 kg.
College: Ball State '98

2004-05 Outlook:
While the team loves his scoring off the bench, Wells will push Miller for the starting two-guard spot in training camp. In 17 games as a starter with the Grizzlies last season, Wells averaged 14.2 ppg, and he was a starter for much of his final three seasons in Portland. Miller-Wells will be one of the most interesting and competitive preseason battles, but both players should play close to the same amount of minutes, regardless of who starts.

Depth Analysis: Small Forwards-Shane Battier
Image
Position: G-F
Born: 09/09/78
Height: 6-8 / 2,03
Weight: 220 lbs. / 99,8 kg.
College: Duke '01

2004-05 Outlook:
Battier embodies what the Grizzlies look for in their second unit: hustle, hard work, good defense, and the ability to put points on the board when called upon to do so. He has seamlessly made the transition from starting 78 games in his rookie season, to 47 games in 2002-03, and then becoming a full-time sixth man last season. Much like the shooting guard situation with Mike Miller and Bonzi Wells, expect Battier to get the bulk of his minutes off the bench, but push incumbent starter James Posey every day in practice.

Depth Analysis: Small Forwards-Brian Cardinal
Image
Position: F
Born: 05/02/77
Height: 6-8 / 2,03
Weight: 245 lbs. / 111,1 kg.
College: Purdue '00

2004-05 Outlook:
Nicknamed “The Custodian” for his willingness to dive for any loose ball that comes available, Cardinal is one of the hardest-working players in the NBA, a trait that will allow him to fit right in with the Grizzlies. At 6-8, 245 pounds, he can alternate between small forward and power forward, depending on the matchup. Where he falls in Hubie Brown’s rotation will be one of the most interesting aspects of the preseason.

Depth Analysis: Small Forwards-Ryan Humphrey
NO PIC AVAILABLE
Position: F
Born: 07/24/79
Height: 6-8 / 2,03
Weight: 235 lbs. / 106,6 kg.
College: Notre Dame '02

2004-05 Outlook:
Humphrey was coming into camp looking to make a name for himself, but has been limited due to a foot injury. If the injury heals in time for him to get minutes in preseason games, Humphrey will need to show off the athleticism and shooting skill that made him a first round pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, as he is facing steep competition at the small forward position.

Depth Analysis: Small Forwards-James Posey
Image
Position: G-F
Born: 01/13/77
Height: 6-8 / 2,03
Weight: 215 lbs. / 97,5 kg.
College: Xavier (Ohio) '99

2004-05 Outlook:
Barring injury, Posey should be the team’s starting small forward again. His ability to contain the league’s best players makes him invaluable to the Grizzlies, and his defense was as big of a reason why the team had the success it did last season.

Depth Analysis: Power Forwards-Pau Gasol
Image
Position: F
Born: 07/06/80
Height: 7-0 / 2,13
Weight: 240 lbs. / 108,9 kg.
From: Spain

2004-05 Outlook:
Expect Gasol to become an all-star this season. He has gained lots of experience since coming to the NBA, and after seeing his performance in the Olympics, he has shown that he is capable of being one of the best PF's in the game. Pau should recieve the same amount of time as last season because of the rotation coach Hubie Brown uses.

Depth Analysis: Power Forwards-Stromile Swift
Image
Position: C-F
Born: 11/21/79
Height: 6-9 / 2,06
Weight: 230 lbs. / 104,3 kg.
College: Louisiana State '02

2004-05 Outlook:
This is av ery important season for Swift. West said this season will determine what type of hype Stromile will recieve during next offseason. Swift will play backup center behind Lorenzen Wright once again this season. Judging from Swift's preseason play, he is looking more determined to have a successful season.

Depth Analysis: Centers-Jake Tsakalidis
Image
Position: C
Born: 06/10/79
Height: 7-2 / 2,18
Weight: 290 lbs. / 131,5 kg.
From: Greece

2004-05 Outlook:
The Grizzlies are happy to have Tsakalidis back, because he feels up the lanes with his size. Since the Grizzlies lacked to get a big man during the offseason, Tsakalidis, Wright and Swift will have to come together to produce numbers of a complete center.

Depth Analysis: Centers-Lorenzen Wright
Image
Position: C
Born: 11/04/75
Height: 6-11 / 2,11
Weight: 240 lbs. / 108,9 kg.
College: Memphis '98

2004-05 Outlook:
This will be Wright's 4th straight season starting at the center position for the Grizzlies and is just 1 of only 2 starters that have been with the Grizzlies since they moved to Memphis with the other one being Jason Williams. With his heart and leadership, he will bring alot of fire to the Grizzlies team. After the Grizzlies didn't get their big man in the off-season, that motivated Lorenzen to become a better competitor on the inside. Wright should have a great year in Memphis this season.

November 1, 2004

With the season 2 days from being underway, there have been many questions on how well the Grizzlies will do this season. Was there 50 game win season a fluke? Is Swift really going to play like a 2nd overall pick? Can Jwill have another solid season without going off on the coaches? Will Pau finally become an all-star? Was Posey just a one-year wonder?

Well, we won't no most of those questions until the season starts, but the last question can be answered. Posey is one of the most underrated players in the league, and even though he is still hurt with a broken foot, he is ready to start the season. "I'm not 100% yet, but I can still come in and do my job like I suppose to," Posey said. "This is my time to show people that I'm not fake."

Posey averaged career-highs in PPG, SPG, FG%, 3P% and FT% last season. "He does so much on the court, and runs the floor like a deer. You will be amazed how quick he is on the break," Coach Hubie Brown said.

This season will be filled with answers. The Grizzlies want to be a playoff team once again, Hubie wants Swift to play with heart, and Pau is looking to become an all-star. The Grizzlies season opener is on November 3, 2004 against the Washington Wizards. Be there, or you will miss a historical night in Memphis.

2004-05 Season Preview.

Grizzlies finally on the map?

Well, we can't say that now, but the way things have went in Memphis has made the league more aware of this team. This team has no true star yet and the closest thing they have to a star is Pau Gasol who only plays no more than 32mpg for the Grizzlies.

After Grizzlies president Michael Heisley brought in Jerry West and Hubie Brown, things have been completely turned around in Memphis. No more losing seasons for the Grizzlies? Possible, but most likely it won't happen with West and Hubie running the show. The play of Jason Williams has exelled after getting use to Hubie and West. He admired West back in his old days and they also came from the same neighorhood in West Virginia.

Memphis was put in the toughest conference in the league that includes 2-time champions San Antonio Spurs, the high-powered offense Dallas Mavericks, the 1-2 punch of Tmac and Yao with the Rockets and a New Orleans Hornets team that made the playoffs in the East. Things couldn't get any worse for the Grizzlies. There was speculation on why the Grizzlies weren't moved to the Southeast Division, and if you look at the United States map, you will see Memphis basically in the southeast.

With Posey coming and playing like a tru' baller, the Grizzlies have higher hopes this season with Posey coming off career-high avearges.

To found out more about the season preview, look at SLAM 84.

Grizzlies Head Coach Hubie Brown Announces Retirement

Image
Hubie was the Grizzlies most successful coach in team history and a great mentor

Memphis, Tennessee, November 23, 2004 -- Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced that after a successful 33-year basketball coaching career, Grizzlies Head Coach Hubie Brown is retiring. Grizzlies Assistant Coach Lionel Hollins has been named the team’s interim head coach.

“Unexpected health-related issues will not allow me to continue coaching the Memphis Grizzlies,” said Hubie Brown. “This situation was unforeseen and absolutely non-existent at the beginning of the season.”

Brown, who joined the team on November 12, 2002 as the sixth head coach in team history, coached the Grizzlies to an 83-85 (.494) record during his tenure. Last season, his first full season at the helm, Brown led the Grizzlies to one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history. Under his command, the Grizzlies won 50 games, shattered almost every team record and earned the team’s first-ever playoff berth. His 78-78 record through the 2003-04 season with the Grizzlies made him the only coach in team history to have a .500 record, becoming the winningest head coach in team history. After the outstanding 2003-04 season, Brown was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year, winning the award for the second time in his 15-year NBA career.

“This is an extremely sad day for me,” said Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West. “This franchise is by far better from the leadership and guidance of Hubie Brown, and we will be forever grateful to Hubie. Hubie has helped this team and organization receive the respect and stature it deserved. On a personal note, I had an incredible working relationship with him during our short time together, and his legacy will be felt by all of us.”

Brown’s coaching career spans 33 years, including 15 with the NBA, in which he led the New York Knicks to two playoff appearances during five seasons (1982-87), the Atlanta Hawks to three playoff appearances during five seasons (1976-81) and led the Kentucky Colonels to an ABA (American Basketball Association) Championship in 1975. He also spent 15 years as a highly regarded teacher at coaching clinics and as an NBA broadcast analyst for three television networks, was nominated for a Sports Emmy in 1994 and 1999 and received the Curt Gowdy Electronic Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

Hollins takes over as the Grizzlies’ interim head coach for the second time in his career. He first joined the Grizzlies as the lead assistant in Vancouver during the team’s inaugural season in 1995-96. Hollins served that role for four and a half seasons before taking over as head coach midway through the 1999-00 NBA season. As Interim Head Coach, Hollins guided Vancouver to an 18-42 finish, 22-60 overall. In 2002-03, he returned to the Grizzlies to serve as assistant coach.

Hollins’ coaching experience includes seven years (1988-95) as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns. While with the Suns, Phoenix compiled a 394-180 overall record, while posting 50 or more wins and reaching the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons. Phoenix also reached the 1993 NBA Finals, while winning two Pacific Division Titles in 1993 and 1995. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Arizona State University, where he served two years (1985-86, 1987-88) as an assistant coach.

Image
"I can't believe this really happened. It was so unexpected and he was like a best friend to me. I know one thing, and that's I'm going to step my game up tremendously and make sure this team doesn't fall. Hollins is a great coach and the players are use to him so it's not like we bringing in someone completely new. You will see the same Jwill you have been seeing, but better. As a team, I know we will step up to the challenge and we all remember some of Hubie's rules. With the same coaching staff, I know we will have the same type of attitude towards games."

Grizzlies Trim Roster
Former Boston College star and veteran Outlaw We're Released

By Ronald Tillery
October 31, 2004

Image
Antonio Burks was very relieved that he stayed on the team

Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown didn't wait til' Monday to announce who he would let go for the 2004-05 season. The Grizzlies had 17 players listed on their roster, and they had to trim the roster down to 15 players. "This was a tough decision," said Hubie Brown. "Outlaw one of the brightest spots on our team. His veteran leadership (on and off the court) just made us a better team. We only did this because of his contract size, and we are trying to stay at the league's cap size."

Troy who injured himself during the Grizzlies training camp understood the decision Brown and the Grizzlies had to make. "This was just one of those things. I'm pretty sure I will have another chance at playing, and I'm glad that I had the chance to come and play for a great group of guys and the fans were great as well," Bell said.

Image
Bell was the former Big 10 Conference Player of the Year at Boston College

Other Grizzlies players who were pretty close to packing their bags was Ryan Humphrey and Antonio Burks. The Grizzlies drafted Jones last year in the 1st round. Burks didn't exactly have a guarenteed contract and that's why it was speculation on him going before Bell. Burks contract is smaller though, since he was taken in the 2nd round and Bell was a 1st round pick.

Memphis will have their opening night on November 3rd against the Washington Wizards in the all-new FedEx Forum.

Where: The Target Center
Records: Grizzlies 8-4; Timberwolves, 10-0.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Grizzlies take on an undefeated Timberwolves team tonight. Former MVP Kevin Garnett has been playing very well for the Timberwolves averaging 23.5ppg, 11.9rpg and 5.1apg. Despite all the controversy between Cassell, Spreewell and the front office, this team has took a step forward from their performance last season when they had the league's best record.

Lionel Hollins doesn't want to use the 10-man rotation for now. "I don't feel too comfortable with the rotation and I like to depend on my starters to win the game for us. I used it in the Seattle game, and I just wasn't that comfortable letting the bench players get the same minutes as the starters," Hollins said. Hollins will be looking for his starters to get around 30 minutes each if possible. "I still may use 10 guys, but they won't play as many minutes," Hollins said. With the Grizzlies possibly getting Fratello, he doesn't like to use the 10-man rotation either so things could change in Memphis in the next week.

Spreewell is averaging 21.1ppg and the Grizzlies will depend on Posey to put a stop to him. Posey is having a career-year with 20.1ppg along with 8.0rpg for the Grizzlies. This will be the key matchup for tonight's game along with Pau Gasol vs. Kevin Garnett.

PROBABLE STARTERS
Grizzlies
C-Lorenzen Wright
PF-Pau Gasol
SF-James Posey
SG-Bonzi Wells
PG-Jason Williams

Timberwolves
C-Michael Olowokandi
PF-Kevin Garnett
SF-Wally Szczerbiak
SG-Latrell Spreewell
PG-Sam Cassell

Williams did all the good things during the game vs. the Supersonics

MEMPHIS, Tennessee Nov.24 (Ticker) -- As the game began, there was a turnover on the Grizzlies. Seattle threw an outlet pass to Antonio Daniels who seemed to have an easy dunk, but Lorenzen Wright came behind to block his layup attempt. Jason Williams recieved the ball and gave it to Posey for a breakaway dunk on the other end. This is just how determined the Grizzlies were tonight after Hubie Brown resigned from the team yesterday.

Stromile Swift threw down a two-hand dunk, while getting fouled by Nick Collison. That dunk, plus the FT put Memphis up 24-19 with 1:34 left in the 1st quarter. At the end of the 1st quarter, Memphis led 28-23. Gasol had 10 points for the Grizzlies and Williams dished out 4 assists.

Bonzi Wells split two defenders and went up for the dunk that gave Memphis their largest lead of the 1st half with a 38-27 lead. Williams dished the ball to an open Battier in the corner, that gave Williams his 6th assist of the game and Battier's jumper put Memphis up 49-36 with 5:52 left in the 2nd quarter. At the end of the 1st half, the Grizzlies led 60-44. Swift and Cardinal combined for 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies. Memphis was shooting 61% from the field, while the Sonics were shooting 43%.

Wright had Luke Ridnour on the mismatch in the post and Wright dunked on the 2nd year guard from Oregon. The dunk put Memphis up 72-56 and the Sonics had to call a timeout. Memphis led 83-66 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Gasol was monsterous in the quarter with 10 points and 4 rebounds. He had 24 points and 6 rebounds through 3 quarters and finished with 24 points and 8 rebounds for the game. Ray Allen had 20 points through 3 quarters after just scoring 8 in the 1st half, he ended up wtih 12 points in the 3rd quarter.

Jason Williams dished out his 10th assist of the night when he passed the ball to an open Posey for a jumper that put Memphis up 101-78 with 5:48 remaining in the game. Jason then came down 2 possessions later and drilled a 27 foot 3 over Danny Fortson that made the Memphis crowd erupt with 5:17 left in the game. The 3 pointer gave Jason his 1st double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 assists. Cardinal made 2 free throws that basically put the icing on the cake for the Grizzlies as they led 110-81 with 2:08 left in the game. Watson dribbled the clock out with the Grizzlies winning their 1st game under interim coach Lionel Hollins.

Expect an update of the Rockets game today and possibly the Dallas game as well to make up from yesterday. I was busy yesterday, but I don't have nothing to do today.

Awesome. Simply amazing.

Someones really gotta be nuts or really dedicated to put in so much time & effort into a dynasty. Respect to you man.

Hehe, one of the top three dynasties. (B)

Keep up the in depth things every year, perhaps even have some post game comments and/or conversations between Kenny & Barkley. I don't know, anything new.

I'll be reading this one. Good luck man.
