roster corrections

Postby sventhedog on Wed Nov 10, 2004 10:06 pm

i have reviewed the latest roster patch. very good roster update. im pleased with the added players which were not in the default roster.
roster corrections: (pls note that the order of names the way i suggest them to be odered in the roster. disregarding players injured except for those out for season like atlanta's chris crawford.
one more thing. i arrange the players in the IR according to their status. IR 1 being the player with the highest chance of being with the team. IR3 for the player likely to be out of the team (waived or traded).
ill start with the spurs since i have the most suggestions to this team.

I have Brezec on my team and to my shock he was rated a 32? I saw him play last saturday vs Cato/Dwight Howard and he got 20 pts. In this game he can't even dunk? What do you suggest his over-all should be? 40-45?

I have made a list of suggestions for the next roster update. I did this last year as well, and Andrew was able to use quite a lot of my suggestions for his roster, so I figured I'd do it again this year.

If someone disagrees, please say so. If someone wants to add someting, then feel free to do it.

Of course you can't change every players ratings, so I only listed those of the stars, or those which I felt were really off.

Also, I mostly suggested upgrades, because I feel it is worse when a player isn't as good in NBA Live as he is in reality than when a player is a little overrated. Who cares if someones 3Pt rating or whatever is a little high. But it really sucks when a player like Carlos Boozer, who is tearing it up in Utah, can hardly do anything in NBA Live (offensively).

I hope this helps you a little, Andrew.

So here we go:

Atlanta Hawks

(Atlanta has been as bad as they are supposed to be with that roster so far, and no one really should be upgraded on that team. Well, with the exception of Drobnjak perhaps, whose FG and 3Pt could be UPgraded a little. But the rest is fine. Does anyone even care about the Hawks?)

Boston Celtics

Paul Pierce: 3Pt UP a little, Passing UP
Ricky Davis: FG and 3Pt both UP a little
Mark Blount: Ins.Scr. UP, maybe Block UP a little
Raef LaFrentz: 3Pt Up a little, Ins.Scr. DOWN a little

(Celts have a pretty solid starting five ... for the East.)

Charlotte Bobcats

Primoz Brecez: FT, Off.Reb, & Def.Reb. all UP, FG & Ins.Scr. UP a little

(THE find of the (off-)season: Primoz Brecez. Okafor's ratings seem just fine to me.)

Chicago Bulls

Luol Deng: FG UP, Off.Reb. UP, Def.REB. UP a little

(People thought Gordon could win ROY. Don't overlook Deng, who is very very solid.)

Cleveland Cavaliers

LeBron James: FG UP, 3Pt Up a little, Steals UP a little, Speed & Quickness UP
Drew Gooden: FG UP

(LeBron is getting better and better. Gooden makes the loss of Boozer a little easier for the Cavs.)

Dallas Mavericks

Erick Dampier: Ins.Scr. UP
Dirk Nowitzki: 3Pt UP, Steal and Block UP a little
Jerry Stackhouse: FG DOWN, 3Pt DOWN
Michael Finley: Speed DOWN
Marquis Daniels: FG UP, 3Pt UP a little (maybe), Passing UP a little, Speed and Quickness UP (a lot), Dribbling UP, Def.Awareness UP, Stamina UP (a lot)
Devin Harris: FG UP a little, 3Pt UP a lot, Steal UP, Off. & Def.Awareness UP, Speed & Quickness UP a little
Dan Dickau: FG DOWN, 3Pt Down a little, Speed & Quickness DOWN a little

(Well, I'm am Mavs fan, so you may think I'm a homer or something. But I tried to be objective and even suggested some downgrades. Finley doesn't deserve a 87 Speed rating, and Stack just isn't the 29 ppg scorer he once was anymore. Overall I think there is a lot wrong with the Mavs ratings. For instance, how can Dickau have higher ratings for Speed and Quickness than Marquis Daniels? Daniels is as smooth as anyone out on the court, whereas Dickau has to be the slowest guard in the league. Seriously. And I really believe how EA rated Daniels is their worst mistake this year. You just can't rate a player by his season stats when he didn't start until late in the season and was his team's second best scorer by playoff time.)

Denver Nuggets

Kenyon Martin: Ins.Scr. UP a little, FG UP a little, Off.Reb. UP a little

(WTF is wrong with Melo? Did he just have a miserable first week or did he lose his game over the summer?)

Detroit Pistons

Ben Wallace: Passing UP a littlem Strength UP
Rasheed Wallace: Steal UP a little, Strength UP a little
Tayshaun Prince: Steal UP
Richard Hamilton: Passing UP, FG UP a little, maybe 3Pt up a little
Chauncey Billups: 3Pt UP a little, Steal UP a little

(The champs deserve a little more respect.)

Golden State Warriors

Derek Fisher: FG & 3PT DOWN
(Man, is ANYONE playing well for the Warriors??)

Houston Rockets
Tracy McGrady: FG UP

(Houston's ratings are kind of okay. Some minor mistakes, but nothing that really jumps at me. Jimmy Jackson's shooting ratings may seem a little high to everyone who has seen him play this season, but one week doesn't make or break a player.)

Indiana Pacers

Jermaine O'Neal: FG UP a little
Ron Artest: FG UP, 3Pt UP a little

(O'Neal can hit from 10-15 feet, so he should be able to do it in NBA Live as well. Meanwhile, "Mr. Defense" Ron Artest is becoming quiet a scorer for the Pacers.)

LA Clippers

Elton Brand: Block UP, FT DOWN a little
Chris Wilcox: FG UP a little, Quickness UP a little, Strenth UP, Ins.Scr. UP
Corey Maggette: FG Up a little
Bobby Simmons: FG UP, 3 Pt UP, Quickness UP, Steal DOWN, Off.Reb DOWN, Def.Reb. UP, Stamina UP, Ins.Scr. UP

(Two talented players seem to finally be able put it together in the NBA: Wilcox and Simmons. Meanwhile, Brand started out a little slow, but he should recover, as will his numbers. Maggette can score, but has a suspect shot. Kind of hard to find the appropriate ratings for that combination. That's why I suggested a slight increase of his FG rating.)

LA Lakers

Kobe Bryant: FG Up a little
Caron Butler: FG UP, 3Pt UP
Lamar Odom: Steal UP, Block Up a little, FG UP a little, Passing UP a little
Chris Mihm: Ins.Scr. & Block UP a little

(Lakers are deeper than in previuos years, but they need a big man to put them over the top. Oh wait, they had one...)

Memphis Grizzlies

(Well, I just don't know what to think of Memphis. They had a VERY slow start, but one bad week shouldn't lead to downgraded ratings. But no one has deserved an upgrade so far, that's for sure. So maybe leaving Memphis' ratings as they are is best. Maybe Wells' 3Pt rating could be a little higher, but that's it.)

Miami Heat

Dwyane Wade: FG UP, 3Pt UP, Def.Reb. UP, Passing UP, Speed and Quickness UP a little, Primacy UP, Stamina UP
Udonis Haslem: FG UP, Def.Reb. UP, Ins.Scr. UP
Rasual Butler: 3Pt DOWN a little

(Wade has been spectacular so far. He looks like he has gotten even faster over the summer, if that is possible. Haslem is solid. Shaq is unstoppable in NBA Live, but then again, so he is in real life when he is at 100%. Maybe 95 for FG and Ins.Scr. are enough, but since that wouldn't change too much, he can as well have 99 for both categories.)

Milwaukee Bucks

(The Bucks' ratings seem okay to me. Desmond Mason's FG could be a little higher, and Gadzuric could be upgraded a little overall, and Maurice Williams should have higher ratings for Speed, Quickness and Passing. But these are minor things, so who cares.)

Minnesota Timberwolves

Kevin Garnett: FG UP, Quickness UP a little

(KG can shoot from 20 foot.)

New Jersey Nets

Richard Jefferson: FG UP, Def.Reb. UP, Passing UP a little, Speed UP
Alonzo Mourning: FT UP

(As with Maggette above, finding appropriate ratings for Jefferson isn't easy. His jumper isn't even average, I think. Still, he scores a lot, so he should be upgraded a little shooting-wise. And why does Zo have a 32 rating for Free Throws? He can hit 'em from the line. And by the way, welcome back, Zo!)

New Orleans Hornets

Jamaal Magloire: FG UP, Ins.Scr. UP a little
Baron Davis: 3Pt DOWN a little
David Wesley: FG & 3Pt UP

(David Wesley can't do much, but he can shoot.)

New York Knicks

Stephon Marbury: 3Pt UP a little
Kurt Thomas: Block UP

(I'm not sure about Trevor Ariza. He has been solid so far, but it may be a little too early to upgrade him.)

Orlando Magic
Steve Francis: FG UP a little (maybe), Def.Reb. UP, Primacy UP a little
Pat Garrity: FG and 3Pt Down (a little)
Dwight Howard: Block UP, Ins.Scr. UP a little, Quickness UP a little, Off.Reb. UP, Def.Reb. UP a little
Jameer Nelson: Speed & Quickness UP, FG UP a little

(Orlando has a much better team than they had last year. And Howard is looking very good so far.)

Philadelphia 76ers

Willie Green: FG UP
Andre Igoudala: FG UP, 3Pt UP (a lot), Strength UP, Dribbling UP

(Iverson's ratings seem to be right on.)

Phoenix Suns

Amare Stoudamire: FG UP a little, FT UP a little, Block UP a little, Off. & Def.Reb. UP a little, Strength UP a little, Ins.Scr. UP (!)
Joe Johnson: FG and 3Pt UP, Speed UP, Primacy UP,
Shawn Marion: FG UP a little, Block UP, Quickness UP a little, Ins. Scr. UP
Steve Nash: Steal UP a little, 3Pt UP a little (maybe), Dribbling UP a little, Off.Awareness UP
Quentin Richardson: Steal UP, Speed & Quickness UP a little
Leandro Barbosa: FG UP

(Amare keeps getting better year after year. Marion can do a bit of everything. Steve Nash is one of the best ball handlers and playmakers in the league, and he's showing it in Phoenix. Q-Rich's shot has been off so far, but he can shoot, so it's too early for a downgrade.)

Portland Trail Blazers

Zach Randolph: FG UP
Shareef Abdur-Rahim: FG UP a little, Steal UP a little
Nick Van Exel: 3Pt UP

(Nick Van Exel is a great shooter, he just never is really healthy. Randolph and Reef are both good.)

Sacramento Kings

Chris Webber: Block UP a little, Def.Reb. UP a little
Brad Miller: FG UP, Block UP a little
Mike Bibby: FG & 3Pt UP a little
Bobby Jackson: 3Pt DOWN a little

(Webber is more of a jump shooter these days, but he still has game. Miller is becoming a threat from mid range as well. Peja has been ugly so far, but we all know he can shoot the ball, so I wouldn't touch his shooting ratings yet.)

San Antonio Spurs

Tim Duncan: Strength UP a little
Emanuel Ginobili: FG, 3Pt, Def.Reb., Speed & Quickness all UP a little

(Parker's FG rating (70) may be a litte low, but he hasn't shot well so far this year, so I wouldn't upgrade him. Ginobili has been great so far as he is finally starting, and Duncan is Duncan.)

Seattle Sonics

Ray Allen: 3Pt UP a little
Rashard Lewis: FG UP, Block UP a little, Primacy UP

(Ray Allen has the best shot in the league, and he has been showing it so far. And Lewis is really coming into his own.)

Toronto Raptors

Vince Carter: 3Pt UP a little
Chris Bosh: FG UP, Steal UP, Ins.Scr. UP a little, Strength UP a little, Quickness UP
Rafer Alston: FG UP a little, Quickness UP, Primacy UP a little
Donyell Marshall: FG UP a little, 3Pt DOWN a little

(A few years ago NBA Live had a "Clutch" rating. Until today I don't know why they took that out. Carter would have to have a 95 in that category IMO. Meanwhile, Rafer Alston seems to have fully adjusted to the NBA game. Has become a good playmaker and shooter. And Bosh, despite struggling early, will be good down the road.)

Utah Jazz

Carlos Boozer: Ins.Scr. UP, FG UP a little
Andrei Kirilenko: FG UP, Steal UP a little, Block UP (!), Speed, Quickness & Jumping UP a little, Ins.Scr. UP a little
Matt Harpring: FG & 3Pt UP a little
Gordan Giricek: 3Pt UP a little

(Utah has been impressive so far. Kirilenko has been REALLY impressive so far.)

Wahington Wizards

Antawn Jamison: Ins.Scr. UP, Stamina UP
Gilbert Arenas: FG UP a little, Passing UP a little
Juan Dixon: FG & 3Pt UP a little

(This team looks and feels like the Golden State Warriors of two years ago. But they are in the East, so they could win some games.)

Hi Andrew,

Nba live 2005 isn't perfect! for example:
If you place K.Rush at the 6th place on the roster, kobe bryant will be the first who's leaving the terrain, and i don't know where you took information for your roster but it isn't right...sorry for my poor english,i hope you can understand me.

i disagree. u cant increase player ratings just because a player like carlos boozer cant make his offense work. if ea designed nba live 2005 so users will have a hard time scoring. so we have to live with that.

i realized that too player rating adjusments make the game unstable.

so whats next? lets say boozers overall is increased to 90. and u still have a hard time scoring, u'll suggest to increase it to 95?

we can jack up all player ratings all day but this is not good. lets say boozer shoots well from 3 pt range this month and his rating goes up to 50. then he struggles the next month, so it goes back to the default rating.
isnt that hard to use a player once effective/decent from 3pt range then the next roster update changes that and make him suck from downtown.

have u tried playing in pc with roster updates then play in a game console like playstation2 with default player ratings?

my prosposition is the we have to make the least possible player rating adjustments. i like to emphasize LEAST. im not saying do not make any change in ratings. off course its just inevitable as in primoz brezec cases.

less player rating adjustments = stability

too much change ruins the game.

im not saying im right. its just my opinion.

just curious, will you be adjusting the attributes to make the game play more realistically (ie lowering blocking in general) for the next patch?

I'll definitely have to adjust his rating as he's been playing very well for the Bobcats. I haven't adjusted any ratings for original players in v1.00, so he'll definitely be updated along with others in v1.01.

Also, I mostly suggested upgrades, because I feel it is worse when a player isn't as good in NBA Live as he is in reality than when a player is a little overrated. I'm sorry, but I completely disagree. I will not boost ratings needlessly and giving Boozer a high three point rating simply to change his overall rating is completely unrealistic. I must invoke my editorial rights here and firmly state that I will not do this, ever. Sorry.

Which information are you referring to in particular? I did make a couple of mistakes with some lineups in v1.00 due to oversight, it seems my double checking wasn't thorough enough. In some cases I have had made predictions (eg with Chicago I left Curry in the starting five. Curry did not play in the first two games but upon his return, the starting five I used proved to be correct), though I try to be as accurate as possible. I'm not saying the roster is absolutely perfect, but if you could tell me exactly what you're referring to when you say that the information I'm using isn't right, it would be most helpful. (Y)

Thanks for the feedback everyone, please keep it coming. :)

I have some suggestions too, there are some players Dirkules forgot about:

- Brian Cook definitely has a 3-pt-shot, his rating is around 0 *gg* That should be increased
- Kwame Brown needs a higher Block rating, he has only 38. Even players like Hassell, Nachbar, Ruffin and Medvedenko have higher Block ratings.
- Van Exel 3pt 67? Well thats a rate for Rip, but NVE should be way over 70 *gg*

OK, just my suggestions, do whatever u want

As I said, I'm flat out at work and I won't be doing anything with it until the weekend. With ratings and lineup changes, it doesn't take too long to make adjustments. Creating a whole lot of players as I did with v1.00 takes a little longer.

Haved you noticed that Dee Brown and Larry Nance were in the referee team? Can you put them into the 90's all stars or free agent so that we can use them play in the slam dunk contast? And increase their dunk ratings to 80.

we can jack up all player ratings all day but this is not good. lets say boozer shoots well from 3 pt range this month and his rating goes up to 50. then he struggles the next month, so it goes back to the default rating.
isnt that hard to use a player once effective/decent from 3pt range then the next roster update changes that and make him suck from downtown.

It took a lot of time making my list of suggestions, you should take at least two minutes of your precious time and READ it before making such irrelevant comments.

I don't suggest increasing Boozer to 90 so he is a stud in the game, and much less I want him to be upgraded to 95 afterwards if he still isn't good enough. I suggested rather minor changes, which do NOT make the game unstable, IMO. And NOBODY in their right minds will say that Boozer needs a higher 3Pt rating. It needs to be decreased if anything.

Andrew wrote:I'm sorry, but I completely disagree. I will not boost ratings needlessly and giving Boozer a high three point rating simply to change his overall rating is completely unrealistic. I must invoke my editorial rights here and firmly state that I will not do this, ever. Sorry.

I never suggested increasing Boozer's 3Pt rating. That's ridiculous. The guy is about as good a shooter from downtown as Bo Outlaw or Shaq.

Plus, I didn't suggest tweaking ratings to increase the OVERALL rating. Who cares about overall ratings? They are useless.

Look at my suggestions. For Boozer specifically, I suggested raising his FG rating, and raising his Inside Scoring rating a little. The guy is averaging 19 points per game so far, and is shooting over 50% for the third straight year. So instead of 55 he should have a FG rating of maybe 61, and his Inside Scoring Rating should be around 74 instead of 68.

This will not make Boozer a scoring machine, but it will increase the chances of scoring with him, which is all I wanted. That doesn't make the game unstable, but more realistic. Again, with all my suggestions I'm looking for rather minor changes. I don't want anyone to be ugraded overall just because. In fact, I didn't even look at the player's overall ratings to determine whose ratings should be tweaked. The overall ratings hardly mean anything, IMO.

I never never never said Boozer's 3Pt Rating should be upgraded, or that his overall rating needs to be adjusted, or that we should change the ratings every week based on the player's current stats. NEVER.

All my suggestions are well thought off, and do mostly not depend on this year's stats, with a few exceptions (Brezec, rookies...).

As I said above, I did the same thing last year:

My mistake, I did misread that paragraph. But I still don't want to boost ratings unnecessarily. I'm open to suggestions but some tweaks are so minor that it's basically a superficial difference. For example, a blocking rating of 51 has no significant difference to a blocking rating of 52, except that it might push the overall rating a point higher or lower.

I've copied your suggestions down and will take them all into consideration, but what I said before still stands, in some cases I will use my editorial right and leave a rating that is fine as it is. My apologies for the misunderstanding in my previous post.

Well, that's why I said these are "suggestions". Everything is still up to you of course. And you're always doing a great job with the rosters! I just went through the ratings and wrote those down which I thought needed some adjustments. Of course, not everyone will feel the same way about all my recommendations, and that's why I invited people to comment on my suggestions or to add to them.

And in the end, it's always your decision, without a question.

And nobody, including me, wants the ratings of all players to be in the range from 90-99. THAT would make the game unstable, unrealistic, and just plain silly. And thus this is not what I am recommending or suggesting, I was rather pointing out minor changes which I think will make the game more realistic, and more fun.

pls dont take my words literally. im just exaggerating things to let u see my point. my point is if u increase boozer's fg or ins scoring just because u cant make him score more in nba live. plus dont take my 90 literally. what im saying is if ever u will increase his overall by a point or 2 and u still cant make him score? would that stop u from asking to increase it more?

anyway. i agree with andrew that u cant just increase ratings for insufficient reasons. hope u get me now.

golden state derek fisher pg/sg.

indiana austin crosshere pf/c. so he can play along with j. oneal. im not
sure if he still plays small forward.

milwaukee marcus fizer sf/pf.

phoenix leandro barbosa shoot be the 9th player or lower in the active roster. my earlier suggestion indicated he should be first player off the bench. my mistake. sorry.

toronto rafael araujo should also be 9th or lower.

san antonio beno udrih pg/pg. his default position is pg/sg. he's parker's backup and they dont play at the same time.

san antonio tim duncan is now listed 6'11. tnx.

Yes, because I don't want every player to score every time down the court. All I want are some more balanced ratings, so that when Troy Murphy for example has ratings of 64 for FG and 71 for Inside Scoring, Boozer shouldn't have less in both of these categories. Of course Boozer shouldn't have 90 or something, but a little more than he currently has (55 & 68), and probably 1 or 2 points more than Murphy on Inside Scoring.

You could of course also go the other route and decrease Murphy's ratings. But since this wouldn't help with Boozer, I instead suggested increasing his ratings a little.

And I mean "a little", literally. And when afterwards he still shoots 5/20 from the floor when you try to force too much with him, that's fine, but at least his ratings are appropriate, and he can score if you play the right way with him.

And this thinking underlies all my suggestions.

Get my point?

Andrew,

A problem I've found with the roster is that after a season or two there are too many players. The game appearently only supports a certain amount of free agents. It sorts them by rating and the weakest players get deleted to make room for the undrafted rookies. This is a problem because with too many players ther are too many good players and not enough room for mediocre ones. So what? well, it seems as if and player with a rating less that 54 or so will sign for a one year minnimum contract. they're good for filling out capped-out rosters. But in year two of a dynasty with your roster, there were only 5 players in the entire free agent pool rated low enough to sign for the minnimum. The other 95% of the free agents wanted money that no team had to spend. Something to keep in mind for 1.01

Thanks for the suggestions all. (Y)

I'm not sure how to fix that mcbiggins, aside from altering ratings unrealistically which I don't want to do. I can review ratings of players in the free agent pool and make changes where appropriate, but I don't want to underrate a bunch of free agent players (which will result in them getting wiped quicker anyhow).

Mcbiggins, I feel the same about the free agent pool!

One thing I've done in the past was manually delete players prior to the drafts (keep some vets in and take some of the younger players, even created rookies, out of the game). You obviously have to know how to edit .dbf files, if you do it shouldn't be to difficult to do.

This year it isn't as easy as deleting players as you have to make sure you match up appearance.dbf files with players.dbf files... BUT I think you could take the players out of dynasty by switching their "INSEASON" value to FALSE!? I haven't tried it but I assume it would work (It has in the past, but I'd make a backup of your dynasty first), and the good thing about that is later on in dynasty, you could bring back the guys you once booted out of your league!

It's a little bit of work, but at least you get more options for your dynasty.

As (tentatively) promised, the patch has been released today (Sunday, November 14th). I have not included slider suggestions as I have not yet decided upon settings that I am satisfied to post.
