Modded 2K on PC is for offline only correct?

Tue Mar 28, 2023 1:24 am

I am strongly considering getting a gaming laptop to play a handful of sports games on PC because of modding Capabalities. NBA2K, Madden, WWE2K for example being the big three. But I am guessing due to obvious hacking/cheating, the games would only be playable offline?

Just wanted to see what the deal was before I made any decsisions.

Generally speaking, yes. You can be online in Steam while using mods - indeed, rosters are still distributed through the in-game sharing functionality, with the art packs being downloaded and placed manually - but mods have been known to interfere with online play, causing the game to fail consistency checks. Even small cosmetic mods can be pinged that way and cause connection errors. Ironically, there are people who get away with hacking/cheating online while more innocent mods get caught, but that's a whole other issue.

But yeah, mods are basically for the offline modes. If you did want to play H2H with a friend using a custom roster/heavily-modded game though, there's always Parsec.

Just to add to Andrew’s answer: Mods are very easily toggled on and off, so there’s no limitation or inconvenience re: playing the default game online in cases where you may want to do so. It’s literally one click to switch your mod configuration on or off. The main issue with online play on PC is cheaters, so typically the types of gamers who gravitate to PC are the ones who want the best possible single-player NBA-style experience, whereas the gamers who prioritize online MyPlayer / MyPark / etc. tend to gravitate to console, where the playing field is more level (harder to cheat on console) and there are more online users to compete against.

Excellent point. You definitely don't have to be locked into only ever playing offline if you use mods; just be mindful to disable them when you do try to play online or you might encounter connection errors if the game flags them as suspicious inconsistencies. Again, that annoyingly seems to happen more often than people getting banned for hacking online, but in any case, there's an easy solution as vetmin said.
