Need some rebounding tips

Are you supposed to press the Y-button to rebound your own missed shot when close to the basket for a tip-in? Sometimes the X-button works for me but I frequently get called for a foul if the opposing player gets the ball first. Often my player is obscured in the crowded paint so I can't determine who actually has the ball. I do get tip-ins by pressing the Y-button when I play with a friend but I have problems playing solo.

Y normally jumps for the rebound, X (shoot) should attempt a tip-in/putback dunk. The latter is a more aggressive attempt on the board, which is likely why you're getting some over-the-back foul calls. Boxing out with LT can help, but there are some canned moments when it comes to rebounds, so you'll find that the CPU grabs a few that it really probably shouldn't.
