Talk about NBA Live 2005 here.

can anyone help me out? the game hangs, albeit randomly and not always. my video card is sapphire ati radeon 9550, played at default detail settings.
Sun Oct 31, 2004 10:32 pm
I have the same problem. It randomly crashes, giving an nba2005.exe error. I tried everything, tested on different pc's, settings, drivers... Nothing helps. I'm playing it on a 3200XP 64bit, 1024DDR, GF 5900FX and an MSI NEO FSR mobo.
It seems to crash more often when I'm playing with my joypad (Logitech Rumble2) than with keyboard. All other EA games run flawlessly with joypad so that shouldn't be the problem.
Maybe it has something to do with the 64bit cpu? (that's the main difference from other pc I tried it on)

What is your Catalyst version? Crashes like this are typically a driver error. There is nothing wrong with your GPU.
Tue Nov 02, 2004 2:36 pm
sorry to sound ignorant, but how do i know what's my catalyst version?
Tue Nov 02, 2004 11:22 pm
Go to you ATI control panel and find the catalyst version there.
You're not being ignornant...Catalyst is your driver version.
Also you can try defragging your PC. Defrag does WONDERS when it comes to games crashing, not loading, running slowly, and etc. But even that might not solve your problems. But generally most people would recommend:
1) Update your drivers.
2) Defrag your system.

No way it has anything to do with the AMD 64 which is the BEST gaming processor you can buy besides the AMD FX.
Live 2005 was not written in 64 bit coding so it won't utilize AMD's 64 bit advantage. So I doubt the fact that your cpu has 64 bit capabilities has anything to do with the crashes you are experiencing.
If you tried it on different PCs and it keeps crashing I don't know what to say. Maybe you have a corrupted Live 2005 disk and it installs a corrupted nba2005.exe. Try updating your drivers and defragging your PCs. If those don't work try to return it and get another disk and see if it still crashes.

sorry, I wasn't clear; i tried it on a different PC and it works on that one, so it isn't the disk.
I had some probs with my DDR in the past, but ran a memtest for a few hours without any errors showing up... so that can't be it either.
I have all the latest drivers, hard disk isn't fragmented at all. Very frustrating!!

It's probably a driver issue then...just wait for Nvidia or EA to address it in their updates.
One question: The other PCs you tested have the same GPU?
Wed Nov 03, 2004 9:32 am
not exactly the same, one had an Ti4200, the other one a FX5900, not the XT edition.
If it's a GPU problem, shouldn't at least other EA games have problems? Cuz all of the 2005 serieus run great.
Hopefully EA patches this soon!

It's probably not a GPU problem because if it was then you would have a hardware problem. But it could a driver incompatibility issue. Just because other EA games work fine does not mean Live would. It's a different game. Quite a few people are having problems with the 5900 so I guess you just have to be patient and wait for either EA or Nvidia to address it.
Also I'm not sure but I think Live 2005 is a direct3d game. Nvidia GPUs are known to be unstable with direct3d apps same as ATI with OpenGL.

Through my experience, I find that when there are problems, a format of the whole system (just the c drive if you have your hard drive partitioned) and re-install of the Operating System (win xp hopefully) usually helps. formatting gets rid of all errors and viruses, bugs, worms, etc., that may be on your hard drive, thus, causing driver problems, incompatibility issues, etc. I format my c drive every 3 months or so, just b/c these things happen and b/c you start noticing your pc to run slower and not as smoothly. I also format just before i install every time the new NBA Live comes out, so if there are any problems, it helps to determine what type of problem it can be.
threatlockz - try formatting your hard drive (hopefully you have a means of backing things up), install all the UPDATED drivers for all your hardware and then install nba live 05. hope that helps - let me know if you have any q's.

already did that, didn't help. that's why I posted here. I'm seriously hoping it's some driver thing that needs to be fixed by nvidia/ea cuz i dunno what can be wrong. I ran a complete hardware diagnostic test, no hardware failures anywhere so it's gotta be software related.

do you have all the updates for the OS? make sure you have all the recommended ones and any that could be video or sound related. i'm running service pack 2 (win xp pro) and have found no problems, so far.
if that doesn't work, try calling ea about it (if it's not posted on their tech support website), or maybe nvidia. i'd start with ea. they've helped out in the past (believe it or not) on problems with previous games, inlcuding nba live.
let me know how that goes.

yeah same here i formated my PC 2 times but still no luck and all of my hardware drivers was updated take note all my games is run fine except this one i think this is the issue on the nvidia drivers and i also noticed that in 61,xx driver of nvidia has a problem on live05 like the free thorw meter is messed up but when i switch my driver to 56.72 and it's work fine
Sun Nov 07, 2004 12:04 am
yeah i noticed that too, i updated once to the newer ones from their ftp (not on official website yet), 66.81 or something like that and the freethrow square was fixed too. But that driver gave me bsod's in other games so switched back

hey is the 66.81 beta fixed the free throw issue
Tue Nov 09, 2004 4:24 pm
yes it does.
I dunno what I did, but NBA hasn't crashed anymore lately. Started a franchise and played 4 games without any problems, despite that freethrow square, but that's purely driver related. I didn't change anything, the only thing that's different is that there are more programs installed lol.

ok i try the 66.81 but i think it not resolved the free throw sqaure problem the only driver that will fix that on me is the 56.72 and i no longer expirienced a hangup and the free throw square problem is solved i hope the 70.xx driver will fix the 6x.xx problem
Thu Nov 11, 2004 4:12 am
the new nvidia drivers are out, 66.91 i believe... tried them, they fix the FT square but game crashes again!!! Switched back to previous ones and game works fine, except that FT square.
Sat Nov 13, 2004 11:14 am
yup i tried the 66.93 on nvidia and it works great on nbalive 2005 it fixes the free throw square and game hangup on my pc
Sat Nov 13, 2004 2:06 pm
i already updated my driver, and so far it hanged only once... but it still did... oh well...
