So how is Live on Live? (Xbox Live that is)

Talk about NBA Live 2005 here.

So how is Live on Live? (Xbox Live that is)

Postby oboeguy on Thu Sep 30, 2004 1:14 am

Well?!? I probably won't be able to get the game today, but I am anxious about online play. If I hear that Xbox Live play sucks, it may be enough to keep me in the PC camp (maybe!). You lucky ones who have the game already speak out!

No love for Live on Live? Bah, I'll find out for myself -- getting the game this afternoon. :D All the local shops which sold games are either gone or no longer sell games... I have to head downtown today and look! I will just happen to stroll by Gamestop... Ahhhh...

I'll give a report about Live on Live if I ever tear myself away from the dunk contest. :D

I have the PS2 version and am going to try the Live version soon, hopefully.

It will be just as good on Live as the PC because Xbox=PC (kinda)

I fully understand the phenomenon that is online gaming but I just can't seem to muster any excitement about it. I'd rather play my homeboys and the cpu than take it online, I'm probably just old school.

But I'm thinking of getting it just to get actual roster updates like Sean Livingston for example. I don't know too much about it, can anyone answer the following questions?

- How much does it cost?
- What is included in the package?
- How does it actually hook up to the 'net?
- Is it worth getting for just roster updates?
- I know there's some sort of mic device, does it really enhance the experience?
- Is there some sort of monthly fee involved?
-

I think it's like $50 for a year, but maybe $6/month? That gets you Xbox Live for every Xbox Live game there is (I have a couple of others).

- What is included in the package?

Nothing, depending on what you get. You can get a starter kit that has the headset, or maybe a game like Mech Asault included (meh, I gave mine to a friend). or you can just get the subscription.

- How does it actually hook up to the 'net?

Only two ways, via a standard network cable or a wireless adapter. So you need a "cable/DSL router" if you don't have on already to share your network connection. No dialup, sorry homes.

- Is it worth getting for just roster updates?

Probably not, except that a lot of games give away two months for free, so you might get your hands on something like that, sign-up later in the season and get the updates like that.

- I know there's some sort of mic device, does it really enhance the experience?

Depends. I haven't tried it for a game like Live yet (only had it two hours now), but it was pretty cool for PGR2 (racing game) and I imagine it's super-useful for team games like Unreal Championship or Rainbow 6.

- Is there some sort of monthly fee involved?

See above.

So I got on Xbox Live just long enough to see what the interface is like (not terrible) and download the roster update. I have no clue what the roster changes are, and I didn't even load the new roster yet, I think (what happens is you download it then you get a chance to "save" it to a file).

My advice? If you've got buddies who come over to play fairly often, and have no other interest in Xbox Live, forget it (except for maybe rosters). But if you want to play against a lot of different people (say me or someone else on the board) and trash talk while you lay the smack down, then get it. :D I have no buddies who come over to play bball on the Xbox (none of my friends or even my bro are into it), so Xbox Live is a priority for me.

Thanks OG, I'm contemplating it for just roster updates but $50 sounds a bit steep for just that alone. Where are you from in NYC?

I got Action Replay--and I just download the rosters--some cool dude from OS has just sent me the current roster with Livingston in it--nice.

Dre, online play is good if there no lag and if the player u play isn't some snot nosed punk who cheeses there way to a win. If you play real ballas who know the game--then it can actually be quite fun. You'll find yourself talking shit to (in your case) your TV.

Nothing beats the boys being over though, i can't wait till this weekend and do ALL Star weekend with a bunch of my boys--I can see the 3 pt contest going all night.

Try x box live, i think u get 2 months free with the purchase of Live.

I'm almost certain you can get Xbox Live on a month-to-month basis if you have a credit card. Actually, even if you buy the starter kit at a store, you need a CC to get signed-on (ask MS, dunno why).

Dre, I live in Washington Heights, but I grew up in Brooklyn.

One of the reasons behind me getting NBA Live for Xbox instead of PC (PC since '98!) was because of Xbox Live. My impression is that it is better policed than the PC online was last year (which is to say not at all). There's a built-in player feedback mechanism, so if MS is serious, the snot-nosed punks will have their accounts terminated soon enough. Also, remember that Xbox Live requires broadband, so high pings won't be as big a problem as they are on the PC. As you can tell I've thought about this quite a bit, and I'll be very disappointed if Live on Live doesn't work out well.

Amazingly, it appears that we don't get two free months! My copy of NBA Live for Xbox did not have a coupon nor was there any marking on the box that said you get the two months. It doesn't matter to me because you can't stack the coupons and I'm already subscribed, but I can see it being a problem for widespread adoption of Live on Live.

Anybody try Xbox Live yet? I still haven't polished my game enough (see my whining posts about playcalling, etc) to brave an online game. But, seeing as Xbox Live is a big reason for not getting the PC version... I'd like to hear about experiences y'all have had.

playing online sucks. there are some people who play normally, but it seems for the most part everyone either shoots nothing but 3's or runs around the court with the pg until they are left open. i really prefer playing against the cpu or someone i can actually see beside me.

i just go online with xbox live to get roster updates. I hate playing people online with xbox. 90% of the time it's 12 year old kids yelling in your ear.
I only use it to play games like RS3 with some friends. We have a night every week where we get together for gaming.
I don't pay for live (i got a free subscription for a year) so that's why i use it. However, if i had to pay for it? i don't know if i would.
xbox online is pretty ghetto i think. Plus, it's a far younger demographic than PC gaming online. And that really turns me off.

If you already own a decent PC, xbox live is definately not worth it.
However, if you have both... with a little creativity, you don't need Xbox Live to get roster updates for the your NBA Live on xbox if you know what i'm sayin'

Yeah, if you buy the Xbox live pack then you get 1 year of XBox live.

That's what I have and I rarely use XBL. I like to play online with PS2 mainly because there are more players(it's free).

I've played online for about 5-6 games and everyone plays with the Houston Rockets. They are impossible to stop.

The headphones are pretty cool so you can chat with the other guy during the game.

Xbox Live rocks, I love it. You can play so many stuff. For other games you can download new maps and stuff. Online play for games like Ghost Recon, PGR2 and Rainbow Six 3 rock. The headset really helps you there so you can communicate with your team.

Overall, I love XBOX Live and I would never change to PS2 online...that is just me though.

I had a really good time playing PGR2 on Live, so I was hoping Live on Live would rock. Mixed results so far, it seems.

Regarding the whining 12 year old's... doesn't sound that different from PC online play!

Strike my last comment. The annoying 12 year old are far worse when you can actually hear them. My first Live on Live experience was HORRIBLE and it has put me off the whole game for the last week and a half. Honestly, I was so disappointed in the lag and the same-old game exploits -- not to mention the dumbass 12yo at the other end -- that I can't bring myself to play again (not that all 12yo's are bad, btw, but this one sure was). Maybe we can have a thread where non-idiots get together to play on Live?

Yeah, the PS2 online version lag's A little bit but not bad. The part that really irritates me is the friggin mic cuttin on and off. It's kinda dumb IMO but maybe a patch for it? I donno :o

At least you get XBL.

The PAL version of NBA Live 2005 isn't Live enabled. Go figure (same as Madden, and they have NFL Europe too)

It seems like every time I go online there's a roster update. Is it the same roster every time or are they being really good about updates?
