Talk about NBA 2K14 here.

Has anyone been able to have separate installations of the game? I would like to play some different mods, but of course, not having to copy and paste files all the time.

I believe making copies of the installation folder and running the .exe file from the appropriate copy has proven to be a viable and handy method of juggling multiple total conversion mods and the like.

IMO, best option is to use JSGME :

Ah yes, definitely another viable option.

Another good point is that it helps to save a lot of disk space

You can also create shortcuts for your various installations. Create a shortcut and rename it to reflect the mod. ex) NBA 2k14 URB or NBA 2k14 NCAA 2018-19.
I use a combination of multiple installs and JSGME. Big mods like URB can take a while to enable. Depends on your PC. Don't be intimidated by JSGME. It is easy once you set up the first mod to enable. I also use it to test mods, graphics files like CFs, uniforms and courts and test graphics files I'm editing. It can also be used to isolate what files just caused your game to crash aka troubleshooting. I also use it for other games.

If you have the space to spare then I think it's more efficient to have multiple copies of the game and just like what Bassman said rename the folder like URB, UBR, etc.
I also have a software called Shadowmode where specified folder and files will go back to it's state the last time you save it after reboot.

That's how I do it because I just prefer it and I got a 2TB HDD so it's no biggie. Just copy the 2k main directory files and paste in the same location so there's duplicates. Then just rename the folder to whatever mod it is now and play the game through that folders exe
