NBA Live 2001 actually had 3D crowd. It took 3 years to have blocky 3D crowds again (with NBA Live 2004).

I remember the crowd art files from the 2001 PC version and if I remember correctly they were flat 2d crowds but they had empty seats to account for unpopular teams

Seems like they removed the 3D crowds before release. I remember the 2D crowds too.

The first few rows were 3d.

Whats even more amazing, is that Madden 08 for the PC did not have a 3D crowd. That blew my mind. The on field graphics were alright, but that crowd stood out like a sore thumb.

Same for FIFA series of PC until 11, when next-gen arrived (IMO the move that made FIFA the leading football game).

Honestly, I've been keeping track of it, but didn't want to chime in until I'd had a chance to pull out NBA Live 2001 PC and take another look. Still getting around to doing that.
