What's the reason behind 2k9 cyberfaces looking better than 2k14 ones?

Is it just shaders and enlarged textures? And is it possible to convert 2k9 faces to 2k14's format? I think untamedbeast's paul pierce cyberface was from 2k9, so if so, what's the process for converting? Thanks
