Does this make tv timeouts shorter/less frequent?

how will this work with players who have contracts with certain companies. how will it work with companies who have official contracts with the nba already? can we see a nike player wearing reebok on his chest?

Pretty sure once teams negotiate terms with a company for an ad, it'll have to be approved by the league. If that's the case, they will not allow competitors to advertise, similar to Reebok's deal with UFC. There are a few other non-competing companies like Monster that are also sponsoring UFC

so i can see them blocking certain companies but what about individual player deals. if a team wants to put adidas on their shirt but 2 guys have nike deals? i assume the ads are for the entire team and not per player?

Perhaps those brands will be excluded from appearing on the jersey ads, especially as Nike will be taking over the jersey deal from adidas.

Well yeah I don't think Reebok, Adidas, Under Armour, Li ning, etc. will be possibilities. Nor car any companies competing with Kia/Hyundai.

That's why I'm assuming that no competing apparel brands will be able to advertise on the jerseys. And if so, there'll probably be a Nike tick on there somewhere as well.

I wonder if this means players will also be able to feature advertisements/endorsements via their gear. In the past, they haven't been able to feature logos (apart from the NBA logo, of course) on headbands and the like, nor even their jersey number, as Chris Gatling discovered many years ago. If they're going to be walking billboards on behalf of their teams, they should be able to feature Nike/adidas logos on bands and braces/supports, as per their own endorsement deals.

The NBA logo is above the name on the back.

Some guy on Reddit made a couple of mock-ups a couple of years ago.

Also the WNBA already does it.

I don't think they'll ever go to that extreme. They won't go the WNBA/MLS route but I think the All-star jerseys were a good preview of how it will look:

If that's the route they go, then it could definitely be worse. It still feels a bit wrong, even though it's hardly an unprecedented practice in sports.

Yeah, it's not like they'd be completely replacing the team name with a sponsor logo or anything.

That's happened in the past with a couple of NBL teams here. I'd hate to see the NBA go that route.

It's also hilarious because they're all over the Liberty jerseys this year and the state has blocked sites like draft kings from operating in the state

I know there was the Adelaide Super Sixers in 93-94 or so, which still retained a lot of their old name anyway, but I'm not aware of any others?

Perth's NBL team ran into a similar situation when they had a sports betting company as a jersey sponsor, because advertising sports betting is illegal in New Zealand, which has an NBL team. They played one game of the 2012 grand final with athletic tape covering the logos.

Oh, yeah, there were some that used the sponsor name either as well as or instead of their city name. I don't remember that being the case with Victoria, but Perth were always referred to as the BankWest Wildcats during that sponsorship, and Coke Wildcats was used a bit in the mid-90s. The PA announcer at the 1995 grand final introduced the teams as the Coke Wildcats and the North Melbourne Booze Less Giants.

But that's not quite the same as the Super Sixers (Eagle Super), or the examples Sauru gave, where the team nickname is replaced by a sponsor. The New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer being the best actual example I'm aware of.

Not exactly a sponsorship, the Metrostars were bought by Red Bull and renamed. Sorta like how Disney had the Mighty Ducks.
