On-ball defense

Postby Rasheeed on Tue Sep 29, 2015 9:19 pm

Hey guys, wondering if anyone else is struggling with keeping their man in front of them? I love the game play this year but playing D on the perimeter is hard because scrubs beat me off the dribble and my guys can never recover. This is fine when guarding quick point guards like Westbrook/Irving/Rose but when Paul George is guarding slower players such as Fournier and gets routinely beaten to the hoop it gets frustrating.

So far despite having Paul George on my team I haven't noticed much of a difference between him and CJ Miles or Solomon Hill in defending the perimeter. Even when I defend perfectly a simple change in direction is enough to create space for the CPU since my player can't adjust in time - it's as if the controller is too slow to respond.

Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Any suggestions to sliders that can help the problem? This is my only gripe with the game play this year.

Keep some distance like you would in real life (except for some situations ofc). Better to let them try semi-contested three than letting them drive to the basket.

When he is trying to use his speed to drive to the lane, keep the distance, do not spam the L2/LT button, it makes you move slower. Press it if the opponent is getting closer on you and is bumping you. Just move around the perimeter using the left stick and the right stick toward the opponent ( auto-contest).

Usually when I successfully defend him using the above method, the opponent is starting to do crazy iso moves - spinning, crossing over etc. Now is the time to hit the L2 button. Stay in position, do not let him use his iso cheese to get past you. At some point he will get bored to constantly bump into you during that possession and he will attempt a contested shot. Most of the times he'll miss, if you remember to point that right stick towards him. The right stick is very useful.

I've actually found that my on-ball defense is the best it's ever been in this game. Usually I'm hopeless, but I seem to be okay at staying in front of people.

Good lateral quickness is very useful.

Anyone else think CPU On-ball defense is too overpowered in this game?

Nope. It's just the zig-zag cheese is gone. But with the right iso-moves you can break your opponent's ankles even on HOF difficulty. Just practice a bit.

Practice? You're not talking about the game. Not the game. You're talking about practice

Jokes aside, I will try that

 a classic. I have a tip about losing your defender. Press the X/Circle/Shoot button and push the left stick left or right. Don't hold the shoot button, just simply press it. He will do a kind of size-up in the direction you pushed your left stick to. Do one or two of those and then quickly cross over to the other side you pushed the left stick, also using the sprint button. Personally if I do that and in some specific situations I hit a spin move with the right players, I leave my defenders in the dust.
