Perkins joins Pelicans

Veteran center Kendrick Perkins is joining the New Orleans Pelicans, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Perkins and the Pelicans were finalizing a deal Tuesday night to bring him to New Orleans on a one-year contract for the veterans minimum.

The Pelicans see a role for Perkins serving as a mentor to Anthony Davis, a source told ESPN.com's Royce Young.

Perkins, 30, will be playing for his fourth team after being a member of the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Cleveland Cavaliers.

He joined the Cavaliers last February but played sparingly for them. Cleveland signed him as a free agent after Oklahoma City dealt Perkins to Utah as part of the Enes Kanter trade, with the Jazz waiving Perkins shortly thereafter.

It's been something of a rapid fall for Perkins, from "guy whose injury arguably cost the Celtics the 2010 title" to "journeyman big who's barely playing by age 30". Nevertheless, he's still a capable enough centre who can give the Pelicans' bigs some rest for at least ten minutes per game, and he's been around the block a few times in his 12 seasons in the league. He's probably got some valuable advice and guidance to share.

Post injury Perkins has been all disappointing. His lower body seems to have lost the quickness. He used to protect the rim alright but he gets posterized rather more these days.

But his success as a Celtic really was a product of having KG, and Rondo. Rondo led offense is much different to Westbrook's. And Ibaka neither Perkins' mid range game isn't just up to par with KG. Perkins basically didn't have to overexert his talent in Boston.
