Top 5 Draft Classes

Postby Andrew on Tue Jun 16, 2015 10:51 pm

According to this piece on NBA.com: http://www.nba.com/2015/news/hca/06/15/ ... 1373313666

1. 1996
2. 1984
3. 2003
4. 1985
5. 1998

I still feel like the best of the Class of '84 gives it a strong argument for #1, but I see what they're saying. I might be inclined to put 1995 over 1998, though: Kevin Garnett, Antonio McDyess, Rasheed Wallace, Michael Finley at the top of the class, Joe Smith with a still fairly respectable career, and other notables who had reasonably long careers and a bit of success, including Brent Barry, Damon Stoudamire, Kurt Thomas, Bob Sura, and Corliss Williamson. Nowitzki, Pierce, and Carter do make a good case for 1998 though, no question about that.

This could be a very interesting topic if put together.

Obviously the top three are always mentioned and often just switch positions on everyones list, but would be interesting to give other classes some recognition.

I think my favourite is 96 and 03 because I got to watch the players develop while when I started watching the nba players from the 84-85 era had already hit there stride.

Recently saw an article about redrafting 2009 with Blake, curry, harden. Probably the best draft since 2003?

Worst Five Drafts of the Lottery Era probably looks like:
1. 2000
2. 1986
3. 1991
4. 1990
5. 1988

1987 has the worst % of players to actually play in the league. 2000 actually had a higher % of players than 2003.

The eight players who never played from 2000:
Chris Carrawell, DeeAndre Hulett, Josip Sesar, Mark Karcher, Cory Hightower, Jaquay Walls, Scoonie Penn, Pete Mickeal.
The eleven players who never played from 2003:
Sofoklis Schortsantis (Baby Shaq), Szymon Szewczyk, Malick Badiane, Sani Becirovic, Paccelis Morlende, Remon Van de Hare, Tommy Smith, Nedzad Sinanovic, Rick Rickert, Xue Yuyang

2014 currently has the worst % of the two-round era (18 rookies didn't play this year). Next is 2013 (12 rookies). 1993 has the fewest number of players to play in the league at 43, but it also had six fewer picks.

1998 had only two draftees never play in the league: Corey Brewer and Andrew Betts.
1990 also had only two draftees to never suit up once: Phil Henderson and Abdul-Shamsid-Deen

The first rounders to never play in the NBA post-merger:
1978: Rod Griffin (#17)
1979: Larry Knight (#20)
1986: Len Bias (#2), Ken Barlow (#23)
1988: Jeff Moe (#42)
1991: Shaun Vandiver (#25)
1999: Frederic Weis (#15)
2005: Fran Vazquez (#11)
2007: Petteri Koponen (#30)
2013: Livio Jean-Charles (#28)
2014: Joel Embiid (#3), Dario Saric (#12), Bogdan Bogdanovic (#27), Josh Huestis (#29)
