NLSC, Look How Far We've Come!!!

Tue Aug 17, 2004 6:33 am

In 1991, when my mom was giving birth to my little sister in the hospital, my step-dad comes home with a brand new Sega Genesis and a cartridge named "Lakers vs. Celtics". At that time, I'd never heard of the game but being a life long Laker fan as well as a basketball junkie I was ecstatic.......

So I pop in the cartridge and begin playing. I played that game for approximately TWENTY-FIVE hours straight until I finally had to quit to get some much needed sleep. That started the love affair with the game that we've all come to know and love as NBA Live.

Here's a link to some screenshots so you can really get perspective on exactly how far we've come: It's truly amazing!

Amazing..sometimes I feel like a lot of the gamers now are spoiled and don't really know how rough it was to play video games back then. People nowadays complaining about shoes--back then we just played to beat the other person.

Good post.

Good post.

Hehehehe, you're absolutely right. We're phucking spoiled beyond belief! The reason I made this post is because I was perusing the threads and saw all the complaints about Live. Some trivial, and some warranted but nonetheless I wanted NLSC (especially those born after 1980) to really gain perspective on how advanced the series is now compared to it's ancestor.

Oh, and it wasn't rough at all. Those graphics were amazing to me at that time like "Halo 2" would be to me now...... :)

25 hours straight? wow :o

I remember another game that I really loved...it was for AMIGA and the name was TV SPORT BASKETBALL.

it was 1991 I think...I had broken my knee and I was confined in my bed..so a friend of mine lent me its' amiga and that game...I played for more then 12 hours...I simply couldn't stop.

Yet..in that game, when you were going from your defensive court to the offensive...the game wouldn't allow any interaction untill you reached the offensive court...you were simlpy sitting down watching your players running :D

but still it looked so amazing. Does anyone else remember that game?

TV Sports Basketball! What a game

Those blocky graphics were great. I was only allowed to use the Amiga on weekends for 'non-educational use' and I'd always play that game. I'd love being Jordan and trying to win against the lakers or spurs. Great game! Thanks for the memories!

Tue Aug 17, 2004 7:16 am

yeah..good memories!

I'm looking for a free download...so far I've found a site:
http://www.cinemaware.com/clsgame_tvbasketball.asp

I tried to register but there is a server error.
Why don't you look too and the first who finds it can write it here. It would be awesome to play it again.

lol

those games are garbage compared to NBA live 04 and 05

Tue Aug 17, 2004 8:05 am

of course they do man! We are talking of 15 years ago. It's just some nostalgia from some old gamers..nothing more.

*sigh* Mike, we certainly understand that those games are garbage compared to current versions of NBA Live, I think even Daredevil could see that. The point you're missing here is to appreciate the metamorphosis of this great basketball game. To see from whence it all came..........

Now I'm going to have to get like an old man on you. "See, that's the problem with you whippersnappers, you have no respect for history!" Hehehehehehehe.......... Peace, Dre.

Tue Aug 17, 2004 8:11 am

Maybe the graphics were not as good but those games were some of the funnest. I remember Jordan's "Kiss The Rim Dunk" from Bulls vs. Blazers. Signature moves kicked ass.

Tue Aug 17, 2004 8:17 am

To kill it even more, they didn't even have all the teams! You hade to be satisfied with the stars: The Lakers and the Celtics. And their co-stars: Blazers, Spurs, Suns, Pistons, Bulls, and Sixers. Everybody else was shit outta luck!

And here we are clamoring for Live 2005 to include Olympic teams, All-World Teams, The WNBA, The NBDL, The USBL, Street Ballers, the Harlem Globetrotters, the Monstars, the high school team from the movie "Hoosiers", etc. etc. etc. We've come a long way baby.......

Yeah! That move was great. I think in Bulls vs. Lakers they changed it to him throwing it off the back board, catching it and dunking. Easily my favorite all-time move in a basketball videogame. It's great to see we'll be able to do it again in Live 2005.

Man, they need to bring back signature moves! Why don't they jus-.......Oops! We're just never satisfied are we?

Tue Aug 17, 2004 8:30 am

We can never be satisfied. It's human nature. I agree, if they were to implement signature moves again it would be awesome. They don't have to over do it either. In the old ones it was just the stars who had the special moves.

Hey DRESPN, do you remeber any others? I got a few....

Clyde the Glide, Karl Malone, Pippen, I think Barkely did but I may be wrong

I remember all of those and I think KJ had one too, I'm not sure. I think Barkley had the behind the back dunk but don't quote me....Does anyone know of a website or something to down load Lakers vs. Celtics or any of those old games?

Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:06 am

I know this is a videogame forum but I had to ask you DRESPN, What is going on with your lakers? I live in LA man it's not looking too good.

Kobe needs the ball to create.
Odom needs the Ball to create.
Vlade can't jump.
Gary's angry
Where do you think they can go this year? I am thinking second round tops.

Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:07 am

Barkley had the same two-handed dunk that Tom Chambers is doin' on one of the pics for that link that DRESPN posted, but he could perform it from very afar, nearly behind the FT line...

Chambers had his special move, Karl Malone, Hakeem, Bird, Jordan, etc...

Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:11 am

I remember being positively addicted to this game and all the 2D EA sims. I would stay up all fuckin night playin that stuff..12 hours straight.

I dont think you would have the same opinion if you lived in the early 90´s and never seen a basketball video game. The game looks like crap as we speak today, but back then it was as good as it gets. Now we are used to, to many features in the game and we are whining about more and more and also whine that the game contains flaws and whatever.

I never owned this Live version tho, it started with Live 96 with the Orlando Magic court on the cover I think, and the game was awesome because I couldnt imagine anything better, I probably thought that the game looked realistic as hell and would never think that it was possible to make this game as it is today. I think we are very spoiled as the game is today, even if it has tons of flaws in it.

My favorite was "Kobe Bryant In NBA Courtside" for the N64 (My first video game system). I played that game for HOURS on end...I never got sick of it...well...until 2002...

Tue Aug 17, 2004 12:52 pm

Mine was NBA Courtside. That game was cool. They had everything you could want..... well, back then. I never got sick of it. I still have it and still play it. Shaq looked real funny in that game too. I still have my 64 too.
