Beasley signs with the Grizzlies

Sources: Michael Beasley signing non-guaranteed contract with Grizzlies

Free-agent forward Michael Beasley has agreed to join the Memphis Grizzlies in training camp on a non-guaranteed contract, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Beasley spent several days working out for the Grizzlies this week and chose that offer because of an opportunity to make the roster as a backup power forward.

Beasley spent several weeks working out for teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs.

Now, LeBron's departure was a significant blow to the Heat's chances, but this...

In all seriousness, it remains to be seen whether he'll last through November.

Pay Riley failed twice with him. One, by drafting him. Two, by signing him when a lot was at stake last season.

It's not like he cost the championship or anything, though. At worst, it was a useless signing, a waste of a minimum contract that probably wasn't going to net them anyone much more useful.

It may not be entirely their fault, but nothing Pat Riley did was convincing to me at the time. You had quickly regressing vets, sub par young talents, then Riley did Beasley and Oden as ultimate solution which I addressed at the time that more needs to be done to the regressing roster. People acted like Beasley was a good gamble when it evidently was clear he is useless as NBA Live 14.

I just think Pat could have worked his magic better luring more solid pieces which possibly could have made difference in the Finals as they wouldn't have relied heavily on Lewis out of nowhere. This cost LeBron James.

It was a good gamble in so much as they weren't gambling much, or taking much of a risk. Expectations were low, not much money was on the line, and they filled out the roster. It wasn't a good gamble in terms of it paying off on the court, but at the same time, it's not as though they weren't getting production out of two players with fat contracts. If good gamble sounds too positive, low risk might be a fairer and more neutral term to use. Didn't exactly help them, but didn't really hurt them, either. Cutting Mike Miller on the other hand was a more damaging move, though at the end of the day, the Heat fell because no one apart from LeBron was showing up consistently once the Finals rolled around.

As for Beasley, although I could see him getting cut by November - if he makes it through training camp, that is - I also see him as player that's talented enough to bounce around the league a bit for at least a few more years, provided he doesn't get into any off-court trouble or prove himself to be a locker room cancer from here on out.

Can't believe this was the guy who was supposed to be picked first by the Bulls in the 2008 draft.

Riley sucks in drafting players. Riley would have drafted Darko if he was available for the Heat then.

Got any names?

Beasley was a good gamble, he basically had a career season and by all accounts was well behaved and put in effort. It's not his fault Spoelstra forgot he was on the roster until the Finals were already lost. (Played decently in game five too.)

Don't be shocked if he plays a key role on a shot starved team like Memphis.

I don't think that Beasley is the kind of cancer like guy as Stephen Jackson was for several teams. Beasley had his moments last season and showed that he can be productive. I hope he'll last the season with Memphis.

So much for him lasting until November, then.

Wot.

Stephen Jackson was not even a team cancer, he's a benign cancer, he keeps the cancer to himself. Teammates love him and you don't play for Popovich twice in a career if you're team cancer.

First left the Spurs because he wanted to get paid.
He was out of Indiana because of the brawl, which was all on Ron Artest, and that gun incident because of trying to protect MVP Tinsley in the parking lot.
Out of Charlotte because he wanted moar $$$ but he did well playing for a demanding coach like Larry Brown.
He got booted out of Milwaukee standing up for his teammates by dissing Scott Skiles for sitting down their best player Andrew Bogut during 4th quarters. He also wanted more playing time and better $$$ contract.
Back at the Spurs Jackson was banished by Popovich because he kept complaining about playing time.

You don't get loved by that prankster Popovich if you're a team cancer.
