The Unpopular Opinion Thread

Postby Jeffx on Mon Aug 04, 2014 12:22 am

I'll get it started:

I don't go with the majority opinion that Michael Jordan is the greatest NBA player of all time. Bill Russell - the greatest winner in American team sports(11 titles) and no one had a higher IQ on the court. Wilt Chamberlain - the most dominant force there ever was. So dominant the league changed the rules on him. Oscar Robertson - the NBA's first 'big' guard, could do anything he wanted to on the court. Averaged a triple-double for an ENTIRE season -sick! Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - won 6 six titles before Jordan, 3-time NCAA champion, changed the face of college basketball, revolutionized the center position and had the most unstoppable weapon in the game.

I can't put Jordan above those cats - it's not fair. To me, they all share the title equally. Just my .02.

I don't think that LeBron will win a title in the Cavs. I don't think that Kobe will play until his 40s (I mean come on, his coach was his teammate). I think that Wade and the rest of the gang without BronBron can even go to the second round of the playoffs. And I think that Bron is NOT the greatest of all time, it's

Well that's the problem picking who's the GOAT since they played on different eras and each one got some advantages/disadvantages to consider.... speaking of GOAT, I reckon Kobe is overrated and I'll place Magic instead for the Lakers' pedestal... that's also the reason why I prefer Lebron over Kobe if I'll start a franchise and I have to pick between those two... Magic can turn a mediocre team (like Lebron) into a contender which I reckon Kobe will have difficulties handling one...

Most people in the question of greatest SG of all time say it's no contest, but people are underestimating the amount of hard work that Kobe has put in. He of course had the drama w/ Shaq, but he managed to win titles with 2 very different teams while Jordan's teams had basically the same formula for those 6 years

The players of today are more technically skilled in playing defense compared to the players of the past, considering that the rules of today favor the offense more.

Kareem would only have 1 ring if it weren't for Magic Johnson.

Prime Shaq > Prime Olajuwon

NBA players deserve the millions they earn.

Vince Carter was the best dunker in NBA history. (dunno if it's that unpopular)

I actually enjoyed the 2006 NBA Finals. It's one of my favourite NBA Finals series to date.

Yes, the officiating left something to be desired, but I don't buy into any conspiracies of the series being rigged (neither did Mark Cuban, for that matter). As is often the case when there are complaints about the officiating, the controversy overshadows the fact that the Mavericks made some costly mistakes, while also failing to make adjustments.

I liked it because Gary Payton and Alonzo Mourning got a ring. I also liked that it was two teams that had never been to the NBA Finals before and thus we were guaranteed to see someone win their first championship. I enjoyed the rarity of the situation.

Had T-Mac and Yao never got injured, Houston could've won a chanpionship or two. And T-Mac would probably win an MVP, too.

Kobe is overrated and Wade is underrated.

Agree with Jeff in a way. The distance between Jordan and the players after him is not as much as imagined.

If Grant Hill was healthy, Orlando Magic would compete against Lakers at NBA Finals in 2001 and 2002, instead of Sixers and Nets.

They would have traded Mike Miller for a skilled center in/after 2001-02 season and they might won a championship in 2003.

I'm not saying he's amazing like Adam Morrison, Luke Walton or Sun Yue, I'm just saying he's not all that bad.

Define hard work. Shaq put "hard work" into his fts and he still stunk

Most of today's players/teams aren't able to build a real rivalry like the '90s Bulls vs. Knicks/Pistons or Celtics vs. Lakers. Almost everybody follows everybody's BS on all available social media channels. League has gotten too nice/boring in that area.

I expected Rudy Fernandez and Juan Carlos Navarro to remain longer in NBA.

And I expected D.J. Augustin to be a great baller like Kemba Walker today.

Some of these opinions could probably be spun off into their own discussions, as we have some interesting stuff here. Also, even if some of them aren't the majority view, you can still make a good argument for them, or general opinion has shifted somewhat.

Liking the 2006 NBA Finals when you're not a Heat fan, though? Now that's bold. ;)
