Byron Scott offered Lakers' coaching gig

Postby Andrew on Sat Jul 26, 2014 10:23 am

Apparently, an offer has formally been made following mutual interest.

Patience paid out, apparently, as Scott and the Lakers had shown mutual interest and engaged in several interviews in the weeks since Los Angeles and former head coach Mike D’Antoni decided to part ways on April 30. Byron had been on Los Angeles’ radar, but it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not he took it as a slap to the face that Lakers general manager (and former Lakers teammate) Mitch Kupchak waited nearly three months to make a formal offer.

Exactly. It would've been a perfect transition from Phil. But I bet little Jimmy has a bit of an ego and/or Jerry was making rash decisions

Byron Scott hasn't been as successful as he was at the start of his coaching career. But then again both Scott and the Lakers have a lot to prove this season. I really do hope they work with that chip on their shoulder.

Scott says he's been hired, the Lakers say otherwise. A good start to their new relationship.

Since league expanded to 30 teams, Byron Scott is only guy to coach 3 straight teams to bottom 5 in defensive efficiency.

I really don't understand why people think he's a good coach just because of those consecutive two Finals appearances where his team got pwned so bad and Chris Paul being excellent at pick and rolls to carry and negate Scott's shitty system in offense.

I'm not sold on him either. He's had his stars carry him in Cleveland and NO so I don't really know what to expect to be honest. I'm glad he's a guy from the Laker family as opposed to Mike D'Anphony and Mike B but like I said; should've gone with Shaw when they had the chance.

Heard they've reached out to Big Shot Rob for a position on the coaching staff though...so there's that.

Didn't he turn a Nets team that was one of the worst in the league to back to back Finals appearances?

The arrival of Jason Kidd helped him.

Where he also led the Nets on his first year to a 26-55 record with Stephon Marbury before Jason Kidd came along?
Or the season just after Scott's last Finals appearance where he led the Nets to 22-20 and got fired in the middle of the season?
Or his Nets offense is always in the bottom half of the league even though their possession is in the top half?

To Scott's credit he did improve the Nets defense (league-leading) but we could say the same thing about Mike Brown's time in Cleveland for their defense.
Jason Kidd's contribution on defense (DWS) is similar to LeBron when he was in Cleveland so giving Kidd the credit for Scott's success with the Nets (despite their inefficient offense) isn't entirely ridiculous same way LeBron is responsible for Mike Brown's success in Cleveland.

So if you think Byron Scott is a good coach might as well consider Mike Brown as the same.

Just like the arrival of Jeremy Lin will? :shifty:

I remember the Hornets played at one of the slowest paces in the league so the games were always low scoring. That probably helped skew his good defensive numbers

Like I mentioned Scott's Nets pace were always in the top half of the league while their offense (ORtg) were in the bottom half and their defense (Drtg) jumped to 1st in the league when Kidd came to the Nets.

I didn't consider Scott's time with the Hornets for my argument of him being sucky since that would make it easy considering Chris Paul is a far superior player than Kidd or at least on offense.
