you need to change your dds save settings so that it is DXT5 and Generate mip maps, you saved and tried importing DXT3...
to find out which compression you need to use since this changes from texture to texture, look at the 3DM tool itself.
use RED MC if you want to be able to import files of different formats....but even then it can get screwy
