The Official NEXTGEN NBA 2K14 Impressions Thread

Talk about NBA 2K14 here.

I finally got my PS4 setup and just played 4 hours of mycareer. I enjoy controlling one player so I really like this mode. The storyline is not my cup of tea but neverless it kept my attention for more hours than I thought it would. I actually can't wait to play after work tomorrow. That is a sign of a good game.

Game is totally not worth $60 for me though. No roster editing....I can't find it anyway.

I will likely get back to the PC version soon. More customization and control. I will attempt to play the PS4 online against someone....though that never goes well.

Just shows what I have been saying about 2K for years... it has THE worst menu and UI system I have ever seen. How can they get photorealistic graphics yet their artists not know how to make a simple menu?

Yeah if I didn't read Jao's post I would have been lost. Really bad feel to the menus and interface....doesn't feel next gen at all.

But I have played more hours of these scripted modes than I thought I would. I like hte direction from 2k. I just wish this was the PC version so I could mod my rosters, art and make the game what I want!

Anyway I am playing more than I thought I would.

I think the My Player mode is an embarrassment to be honest.

It's totally playing off stereotypes and whoever wrote and directed it should be fired.

Why does my player have to be a homeboy? And talk with ghetto slang and even sniff like he is on freaking drugs?

If I am the NBA I give 2K a warning for this joke of a game mode. It has no place in an officially licensed product.

Then ignoring all that, the extremely limited scripting is bugged anyway. Score 43 pts and win the game and get torn apart from the coach for not stepping up and for actually losing the match.

Phreak50 I don't pay much attention to the cut scenes. I just enjoy playing the game. On superstar it is a challenge to win with the team I am on. I think they probably hit the demographic they were going for with this storyline....13 year old American kids who probably have less of an issue with this.

Surprisingly I had a much harder time going back to PC version than I thought I would....sadly I am not sure how much I will play of it....I may need a new mod project.

I had two phases of my impression. @first I was mezmerised by the high level of detail 2K14 has. The faces and expressions. The high amount of animations and how some plays just form and look absolutly realistic in motion.
(I had one play where my player crossed the defender -At the Wing- and he stumbled a bit, as I drove pass him the Defense converged on me by the time I got to the elbow... What happed next was all in motion. I side-stepped one defender and brought the ball up with two hands took one more step and lifted off while one defender tied to block it my player cocked the ball away and turned it over to his side for the dunk. It looked Brilliant in motion!)

I have mostly played the MyCareer mode. I used to play Association however, with the whole VC thing to do do simple GM stuff, I really don't mess with it.

After playing the game for a month in MyCareer. Over 100 games Its still good, but there are quirks a-many. Here are my issues

- Sliding is STILL an issue. When i first began playing this game I couldn't guard anybody.

- I don't know about any of you, but, why does the computer play my team mates and me so close all game!?

- No ability to edit the face of my player (I understand why tho.)
(They should get that Face Gen that Madden 25 had. Loved that)

- Coupled with the body to body defense, is the amount of steals and blocks this game has.

- Tooo many random turn overs. Arrant passes by my player where a player I'm passing too will be moving one way but as soon as i toss the ball will move towards the D-fense so they can pick the ball off.

- Where is the Awards screen?

- One thing thats always been an issue with 2K and probably all BBall video games is the speed and reaction time of the CPU. Centers already at the basket on the break.

- Again no sliders, and MyCareer DESPERATELY needs sliders.

Other then that the game is good! I thought they did MyCareer well. Could be much more added. The whole "you can only wear name brand kicks when you get an endorsement." thing was stupid. I mean Jackson Ellis was wearing Jordans fresh out of college!. I had to wait thru like 80 games. By that time I had started making my own impressive No name sneakers. So it was no big deal anymore. (What would actually be impressive is if i started seeing Players wear My signature shoe around the league, I really made some great ones)

- Also, I cannot let this go by... Running Plays... Whats up with this? I cannot run a play. If I could it may help with the Turnovers. The PC runs plays... and in the playoffs they run them like a machine. I played the cavs in the playoff... They had to have run me thru 3 picks 15 times straight dropping in the Unstoppable Floater. LOL

Mind you I have hand some great and memorable games. The game above with the Cavs was the last game of the series. We were down by twenty and my player just brought us back. It was the most satifying game I have ever played in sports because it was a huge challenge yet besides the 15 "3 pick" plays, it was a straight up game.

So I digs this game!

I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Also forgot. In mycareer, sometimes on the court I feel out of place. like the team ignores my existance. They actually will pass it around me like I'm not there. I'll have to press the pass me the ball button (Which always says BAD CALL) to get the ball.

And the grading system is messed up. A ball thats tipped isn't counted as an an assist? Points taken for Labron james scoring on me??? are u serious!??? LOL Points taken for offensive rebounds? Example: I just swatted Irving's shot. He get it back I lose points for him getting the rebound... LOL Like How would I have got it? with my feet? Just funny stuff.

Since most of the gameplay gripes have been mentioned I'll voice my aestetic complaints now.

Have had the game since Nov 15 when the PS4 came out and still can't believe they have yet to upgrade players like Jameer Nelson Arron Afflalo Big Baby Nikola Vucevic (among many others and as you can see I'm a Magic fan) from their 2k13 counterparts.

Makes me not even play with or against certain teams when I see the hard work they put into players facial details but can't/ won't update those listed, kinda has me worried that they won't ever do them, even for 2k15 etc.

Player coaches the same height (short) as opposed o real life height (Kevin McHale is 6'10" but is a midget when standing next to his team, Rasheed Wallace, too).

Also players still kinda have caveman bodies, thick calves, etc.

Also why does 2k feel a need to add that shiny/ shimmer material to the uniforms when they don't even have them? It's more prevalent on the older throwback uni's, don't like that effect at all, they got too extra w/ that.

Now with that being said along with the other complaints about online and gameplay issues I enjoy playing the game, I'm not regretting investing the PS4 to get this game but feel it could be more "Next Gen".

Edit: The reason I say all of this is it's kinda disheartening to accept when I see NBA Live 14 who was behind when they were both released consistently keep getting updates/ patches to improve that game (which I don't own) but 2k just kinda stalls. They can do better in this dept.

I will say one thing that desperately needs to change and that's having ONLY points of emphasis to depend on for defense. That feature should only complement more detailed defensive options. Why they left out the defensive settings is beyond me. I HATE when my team double teams for no good reason leaving wide open cutters and shooters. HATE it with a passion. Defense sucks right now in Next Gen.

That's definitely one of my main gripes. To me, it often feels like my CPU controlled teammates go out of their way to make it easier for the opponent.

I just came here to say this. If 2K keeps scripting MyCareer like this then its not going to be any fun. There is a fine line and they are starting to step a little too much over it.

I agree, I'm not a fan of the direction they've taken with that. I can certainly appreciate the work that went into it, but I believe it's the wrong approach for them to take.

MyGM, which is the evolution of Association mode, MyCAREER, and MyTEAM (which is their version of EA's Ultimate Team) are the game modes in NBA 2K14 next gen.

Played it for couple of days on PS4 and honestly to me the game stinks whatsoever, people got hyped because of crispy graphics and somewhat larger resolution but to be honest (i still play it on pc tho) it's just facelift of last gen 2k14, nothing really noticable from gameplay standpoint.Animations are kinda same and gameflow is also pretty much same as here on PC, they made different menus and all that (what u notice first) stuff but shell of the game is mainly same as last gen, so to say that they can't make same engine for PC 2k15 is nonsense because most of current average PC's could easily handle that 'nextgen' engine. To justify my opinion, most of people played Far Cry 3, Battlefield, Call of Duty series..and so on..and those games are visually and engine-wise more demanding than basketball game which renders 10 players, floor, arena, benchplayers + staff and not much impressive crowd, so yeah most of us (excluding pentiums 4 and downwards) could run this nextgen 2k if made for PC, the only question is, is 2k wise enough to make such move .. we'll see

I haven't played any basketball games other than the NBA2k lately because I thought the last NAB Live PC series was absolutely horrible.
You are right about the power needed for the game, as I have an i7 930, 18gigs of ram and a HD 7850, get anywhere from 80-100fps with 4xAA and a ton of apps loaded in the background.
It runs fine on my laptop also, so making a more enhanced version shouldn't have that much trouble running on computers.

To me MyCareer is now just a joke to play. From the cheesy dialog that has been used in 3 games now to the lack of customization and of course the changes to the scoring system.
The game itself is enjoyable sparingly; otherwise I just angry with the missed wide open shots, CPU blocking impossible shots or CPU not doing anything on offense.
Again increasing difficulty just making your players worse and theirs better, which is something I just don't understand when It comes to sports games.

It is odd because every once and awhile there will be streaks of playing a great basketball game then the CPU suddenly stop running plays well, turns it over and its back to holding the ball - suddenly I'm up another 20 points and I'm in garbage time in the 3rd quarter.
The biggest issue I run into now is trying to rebound.. why the hell do the players not jump!!! That and for god sakes they need to make it impossible for a player to attempt a jump shot behind the backboard.

I do think game play wise it is better than the past games.

Thanks for the update, unskipable cut scenes shouldn't exist in any game ever. All the park gameplay I have seen looks wonderful and has me stoked to play it
