Never actually got any further than Level 15 in the first one, most probably an NBA 2K came out and got all my attention until I forgot I even had it installed. Should I continue playing the first one, or should I skip right to 2?

I would suggest just skipping to the second one. I kinda enjoyed the first one, but never really played it for more than a couple or hours in one sitting. Maybe because it's all just a cycle of get quest-kill-reward-repeat. I just liked the variety of the guns and the killing.

Too cool for a custom title.

BL 1 and 2 are two different stories. so i guess it doesn't matter if you start over with either one... but to appreciate the series...finish 1 first.

Since I finished the story in the first one and played it very thoroughly I truly come to appreciate how much better Borderlands 2 is than the first one. It is not to say that Borderlands 1 was bad but the things you felt were lacking or were a little one-dimensional in that game were improved upon in the second one. Almost every aspect for Borderlands 2 is a progression towards betterment. Enemies are smarter, managing your inventory is easier, more ways to store your items, easier traveling, more interesting and rewarding side quests along with a story that is narrated very well with more believable NPCs.

Since a game like this takes so long to play I would just suggest reading up the storyline of the first one and moving on to the Borderlands 2. But if you dont mind the overall experience, play both of them just to see how much different and improved the second one is.
