Dreamcast Appreciation Thread (R.I.P. SEGA Europe)

Postby benji on Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:40 pm

On the eve of E3 2012, we are able to inform you, according to our credible sources, that Sega Europe will be finally closed in the coming months as well as all the local branches in Europe like Sega France. This is partly a consequence of the ineffectiveness of Sega's strategy over the past several years of developing games by western developers. At the same time, Sega will also announce, according to these sources, they will no longer develop AAA games on consoles, but will focus on digital games, notably for cell phones and tablets. Sega's last big title developed by Creative Assembly will be presented at E3 2012 in a few days. Furthermore, remember that Sega has announced they will not be at Gamescom 2012.

Pour one out.

Well, they won't be exiting to mobile entirely ever since they have that epic money-maker Football Manager. But PC DD is "digital" so that would be included if this is true.

Plus exploiting that back catalog on XBLA/PSN/Steam has to continue. Seems like they're going to just back off of throwing money away on actual retail products.

hm. Ive always been a sega fanboy but the past few "new offerings" with their classic characters have left me underwhelmed. Oh well, hope they can find the market they need to stay afloat.

As you all know I don't have the mentality to be a fanboy, but the Dreamcast was fucking sexxxxxxxxxx

Too bad the controller is so shitty.

I bet the Dreamcast is underrepresented here. And shame on all of you if so.

If I were still the Nintendo fanboy I was in the 90s, I'd probably be gloating about now. As it is, it's kind of a shame to see.

Could be karma though:

yea, it got skipped over for me, got a summer job just to save up to get it, didn't do my math well enough to realize I would have had enough to get it at the end of the summer, so I just bought a bunch of N64 games before that last paycheck.

How did you kill it?

If Dreamcasts overheat they unset their power supply because the pins bend and pop the board, you can open it up (simple screws) and reset the power supply and bend the pins back.

I've done this like five times on mine.

Also, I bought extension cords for the controllers, and it's easily one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Dreamcast is my favorite console of all time. If only I could own one as a kid :(. Still playing with my cousins with the Dreamcast is one the most memorable thing in my childhood.

Damn it this thread makes me want to buy a Dreamcast. If only I know where to get one even if it's a second hand one.

There is some good deals when I was searching there a while ago but I don't know if they are legit or trusted source though.

If the seller has a good rating and feedback, that's usually a good indication that they can be trusted. You can always send sellers a question, if they're open and straightforward then that's likely a good sign too. If they're vague and evasive, I'd be wary.

I got mine on eBay. Was advertised as coming with 20 games, which was technically true, but most of them were pirated on burned CD's. They nonetheless all worked and the price was right. Fun console.

A little shoutout to one of my favourite games in the series that I spent a lot of time with back in the day. :)

Well, nevermind again:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... an-offices
SEGA Europe will close five offices under the control of its European business this year as it focuses on core brands Aliens, Sonic, Total War and Football Manager, alongside its digital business.

"We are aligning business strategy, and we will be closing our offices in France, Germany, Spain, Australia and Benelux," SEGA Europe COO Jurgen Post told GamesIndustry International this morning.

...

"Basically for us it's putting a lot of focus into those studios and into their IPs. So Total War coming out of Creative Assembly, Football Manager coming out of Sports Interactive, so we want to diversify, so we want to have an increased focus on those brands. And we want to become better and more successful with those."

And how does that affect new IP outside of those current brands?

"At the moment for us those are the four IPs we are talking about, they are our AAA IP. At the moment we are looking into options of course, but it's not like we are already developing some other titles in addition to that, no," said Post.

"It's a focus on those four core IP, and in addition to that we'll have digital. And digital still means 50 - 75 releases every year, so that's still a big number."
