Microsoft SkyDrive 7 GB of Free Online Storage

Wed Apr 25, 2012 11:28 am

It used to be 25 gig.
Wiki:
SkyDrive also provided additional storage available for purchase, and reduced the free storage space for new users to 7 GB (from 25 GB). Existing users were offered a free upgrade offer to retain their 25 GB of free storage.

For a limited time you can retain the free 25 GB permanently if you have a Windows Live active account before April 22, 2012. Active meaning it hasn't been listed by Windows Live as inactive for the last 1, 3, or 6 months? I forgot which is which.

Didn't even know or use SkyDrive before I read that 'free upgrade'.
SkyDrive is also going to be integrated to Windows 8 and free 25 gig is free 25 gig (or 7 gig) so might as well do it.

No need to install the SkyDrive application if you're just going to use it as online storage. Installing the app seems to be for syncing files with your desktop and remote desktop connection. Otherwise a browser can be used to access it.

Free storage size is 7 gig only for new accounts, 'upgradeable' to 25 gig as mentioned for old accounts.
Max upload size is 2 gig if you're using the application, 300 MB if just using a browser.
SkyDrive only works on Vista and after, no support for XP and before. Mac OS X Lion also supported, iPhone and iPad also.
You have SkyDrive account if you already have a Windows Live account (Hotmail, MSN, GFWL, XBox Live?, etc.)

Go to your Skydrive account at skydrive.live.com. (skydrive.com also works) If you haven't been there in a while, remember that you log in with your username and password for Microsoft's catch-all online service Windows Live.

Go to the bottom left of your account page and click "Manage storage." You'll see a listing of storage plans, and under "SkyDrive Free" a button that says "Free Upgrade!" Just click it, and you're all good.

While I was logged in 'upgrading' my SkyDrive account I also chatted with a NLSC patcher who had added me as a contact (hotmail e-mail) . Seems like Messenger is integrated with Windows Live related sites as well, I had no idea. It would have been a good chat if he wasn't French. I can live with interacting in the forums with one French in the NLSC, el badman. Now I have to watch out for two of them. Disgusting.
