not really many great shows currently on... how i met your mother used to be funny, but they've grown a little stale
if you're looking for old stuff, I'd highly recommend Freaks and Geeks

Old, new, it doesn't matter to me.
How i met your mother i've seen bits and pieces of. I don't mind it, but canned laughter always ruins it for me. And it's a bit straight-down-the-line for me to get too excited about, but my friend likes it so i'll probably check it out one day.
I've never heard of Freaks and Geeks... it's a christmas miracle!!! I'll check it out, cheers.

Also,
Cougar Town.
And we had a similar thread a bit back, but there are examples still there:
viewtopic.php?f=76&t=63299Beyond those:
If you haven't watched the U.S. version of Wilfred, there's that.
And The League.
The Middle, Modern Family and Suburgatory are a nice lineup as well.
People like Community too.

Trailer Park Boys, Archer, Always Sunny & Curb Your Enthusiasm should hold you over until you return to the forums again for your stint as a Wizard.

Weeds
Californication
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Mighty Boosh

I disagree, I think it's still going strong. That said, I do think it's heading towards wrapping things up, I believe it's only renewed for one more season after this and they're beginning to tie up loose ends.
Absolutely agree with the Freaks and Geeks recommendation though.

The Big Bang Theory is another one of my favourites these days, though being filmed in front of a studio audience it's one that some people will immediately dismiss because of the laugh track. Of course, if that's a reason to dismiss a show or consider it lame, then shows like Seinfeld, Cheers and Frasier were lame. And that's just crazy talk.

oh yeah +1 on Community, forgot about that one.
and +1 on US version of Wilfred. Elijah Wood aka the Lord of the Rings guy is in it.

surprisingly, they don't do canned laughter. they film all the scenes (including flashbacks) and then put it all together, show it to an audience and record their laughter.

Right but audiences are dumb and laugh at unfunny parts. Thats my only beef with How I Met Your Mother. But eventually you don't even hear it when you watch.

Frasier had a laugh track, Seinfeld had a laugh track.
They suck, you just have to make the show good enough.
Unless you're like an old roommate who couldn't sleep if he could hear the quiet din of a laugh track through the wall.

I've never found that to be the case with HIMYM, though they have toned down the recorded audience reactions a bit over the years. Like you say though, after a while you kind of tune it out.

I'm gonna get on Parks and Recreation. Perfect, thanks!

A little surprised you haven't really gotten into HIMYM, seeing as though you're a Friends fan. Friends is one of my all-time favourites too and for me, HIMYM is kind of the next generation of Friends with creative use of the flashback as a framing device.

The Colbert Report and the Daily Show With Jon Stewart are really good.

Forgot to mention it before but I'd second Ben's suggestion of Modern Family as well.

I saw like 2 episodes because my roommates watch it every week and it's actually pretty funny. there's a lot of shows on TV that TRY to be funny but actually aren't, but Modern Family is definitely not one of those

Too bad NBC is trying to get rid of the show. THankfully, I started on season 2 i think so when it does get cancelled I stilll have "new" episodes to watch.

It has just terrible ratings, the worst on the network. It only got three seasons because they had nothing better until this year. (Up All Night, and the upcoming Chelsea Handler show.)
Sony might give it away for a fourth season like they did Til Death so it has 80+ episodes for syndication though. If it had a final fourth season like that compared to the first three seasons it might become the greatest show ever.

what about whitney? even the "best parts" of the show they put on commercials are terrible
Sun Nov 20, 2011 8:39 am
The only NBC comedy with better ratings than Whitney is The Office.
