Who is most likely to record a quadruple double?

Postby rise on Sun Sep 04, 2011 3:04 pm

Just thinking today which guys do you think could get a quadruple double at some point in their careers?

Here's my list (from most to least likely)
-Rondo- He's usually good for 10 assists and 10 points, he can rebound really well for a guy his size and he is a steal machine. He comes close to a qd nearly every time I play against the Celtics in Live. Regardless, it's likely he gets on by the time his career is over.

-Lebron- because he's a stat whore and he's also fully capable of coming close to a triple double every night. He's probably the only guy here I could see getting 10 blocks and 10 steals. (on separate occasions lol) I think it's only a matter of time before he averages a td and with his defense, he could certainly get a qd eventually.

-Chris Paul- see Rondo, only I think he's less likely to put the crazy numbers Rondo might put up.

- Wade- basically the same situation as Lebron, but much less likely and Wade is less of a stat whore

-Surprise pick: Russell Westbrook- I think if his defense improves a little, he's capable of getting the 10 steals. He's already capable of the td

Notable snubs:

-Howard- he's going to get so good, he won't even need to pass the ball ten times in a game. That happening along with a ten-block night is highly unlikely, unless he becomes the 25/17 and 3-4bpg monster that I think he could become.

-Poohdini- defense will need work before that happens.

-Andre Iguodala- he's probably the most well-rounded non-All-Star in the game. He put up amazing all-around numbers, with everything except points rivaling Lebron's numbers. What Iggy lacks on offense, he makes up on d though, and I think he's capable of having one crazy night in his career where he at least gets really close to that qd.

- Blake- if Blake can become the shot blocker that he's capable of, there's no doubt jn my mind he'll eventually get there, but the question is will his defense improve to the point where he can block that many shots? He's an obvious double-double, and is one of the best big man passers, so it's not out pf the question.

-John Wall- he's already put up nine in every category except blocks, so it's somewhat feasible that he'll get close to a qd. I'm just not sure if he can put that all together.

Well, yeah that's my list. Let me know if I missed anyone obvious.

Rondo, LeBron, Paul and Howard would be my top choices. I'd agree that Rondo's a good pick for the likeliest player to do so, he's no stranger to triple doubles and he's the type of player who could rack up ten steals in the midst of a big game. I'd put Howard up there too because of the blocks, if he's getting the touches and finding teammates as the defense collapses on him then he could get the assists as well; the points and rebounds are virtually a given with him. CP3 and LeBron have the all-around skill, I'd probably rate Paul's chances a little better at the moment since LeBron's playing with two other stars that fill up the stat sheet.

Rondo, best all-around guy in the NBA IMO. Aftyer that LeBron, then Blake, if his blocks can improve like you said.

I think Paul, Rondo and LeBron are good picks. I'd see Howard as an outsider because for me it's hard to imagine him surpassing 10 assists in a game (I think 7 is his best so far).

Outside of those guys I'd also say Iguodala and maybe McGee (again, assists will be a deciding factor).

Rondo. LeBron and Wade have the best shot at recording a 5-by-5 I think. Wade has been close to it, just 2 steals short I believe a couple of times.

I dont see Rondo getting 10 steals, I dont know why....

The only player I could see doing it is LeBron with blocks being the foruth category.
Opinions are my own.

Wade gets 10 blocks before LeBron, LBJ rarely got 2-3 last season.

He had eight in a game against the Grizzlies last season, I reckon he could get ten. He could at least join the group of players who have come very close to a quadruple double.

It's more likely to happen with steals though. I think LeBron could get 10 of those sometime.

I think Josh Smith could do it too- I remember him coming close at least a couple times last season. I could see Gerald Wallace getting a 5-by-5 as well. You pretty much have to be a top-notch athletic defender to get something like that.

Highly doubt McGee can get one. Did you see what he had to do for a triple-double last season? He had the boards and blocks, but he tried way too hard to even record 10 points (seriously, it was worse than Blatche's quest), let alone dish. His career high is three assists, and he's only done it once.

Point noted; I guess I just always thought that the hardest stats to get 10 in were steals and blocks and since McGee had one of those covered, it'd make him a candidate. His performance was pretty deplorable in that game

If he were ever in a position where he was close though, I imagine he'd go all out to try and get it.

There were times in the past that some players flirted with a quadruple double. Like Shaq in the 2001 finals.

There have been four since 1974 (which is when blocks and steals were counted for the first time)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_%28basketball%29#Quadruple-double

Going back to the five-by-five, Josh Smith actually had five blocks and five steals in a game once, but didn't get enough assists. Same with MJ, Pippen, Ben Wallace, Emeka Okafor, Dwight, Shaq, and others.

There's been eight occasions where players have narrowly missed out, with the most recent being Clyde Drexler in 1996. Even if we don't see someone tally one anytime soon, we could at least see one of the players mentioned above come very close.

Shaq's almost quadruple double doesn't count on that?

He was two shy in one category, and one shy in another. Drexler was one shy in one category.

Just saw that Rubio managed a quadruple double during FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. Hell, he is far away from even getting a double double during Eurobasket '11.

But back to topic I'd say Rondo>LeBron (maybe with Wade and/or Bosh injured)>Paul (if he'd stay in a similar environment)>Howard (very doubtful concerning foul trouble).
