December 2020 Review

After going through November with only one loss, the Nuggets added 3 to that tally in December. However with a record of 25-4, they're already 7 games ahead of their nearest competitors in the Spurs and the Jazz. In fact, only one other team in the entire league has gone over 20 wins so far and that's the Detroit Pistons. December was a month that saw TNL regulars Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith get rested.

An interesting fact; in the entire 12 year span of this dynasty, Denver has had either Carmelo Anthony or J.R. Smith not only on the team, but playing just about (if not every) game, so you could say this was a first for the Nuggets. The team proved how deep it was in rotation, losing only one game with these guys as they were led by the inspirational Borislav Perko.

The Nuggets also said goodbye to long serving player Brandon Jennings in a deal that saw JaVale McGee make his return after he was initially signed by Denver in the ill-fated "Roster Player" era. He's already proven to be a useful asset off the bench with his length and athleticism. But the biggest trade of the month (and possibly the season) came from elsewhere. Last season's scoring champion Ollie Rose was traded away to the New York Knicks for Zach Pearson and Dickey Freeman. After being perenial contenders the last few years, the Clippers are coming 8th in the West so far this season and are now looking to go into a new era. While the trade might seem lopsided, they get one of the league's most dominant centres and a rising point guard prospect, so their future looks bright.

Speaking of new eras, this dynasty now heads into 2021 and Denver will continue to assert their dominance into the 20s.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. Turns out that the problem with my TV was in the power cable. It has now been replaced and this shall continue and hopefully pick up some steam again. I'm also looking to implement a new feature or two, so be on the look out for that. Next up will be a 5 game summary. Let's get this thing to 50 pages! :)

Great to see this one back. (Y)

I'm also glad to see the game is still giving consideration to Perko for his triple double average and that it's still intact this far into the season. Meanwhile, looks like the Clippers finally pulled...well, a "Clippers".

Thanks Andrew, I definitely enjoy being back on Live 10. A triple-double season is amongst the achievements I'm hoping to get before this thread comes to an end. My list is looking something like this:

-Triple-double season
-Quadruple-Double in a game
-Double-Triple-Double in a game
-Win Most Improved Player trophy
-10 Championships (for that last dynasty related trophy)
-Have LeBron retire without a ring

Well, I'm kind of kidding on that last one, but it would be nice :P

5 Game Summary

For various reasons, it took a month to complete these 5 games, but not much has changed. Like the previous update, the Nuggets went 4-1, losing only to one of their bogey-teams the New Orleans Hornets. It was a first up loss, which means the Nuggets are currently on a 4 game winning streak. They recorded a relatively comfortable wins against both Texas teams, while the encounters against Utah and Atlanta were a little closer. The feature game is against the Hawks:

Bing Rockets Denver To Victory

Image

The Denver Nuggets recorded a 75-71 win against the Hawks thanks to a dynamite 4th quarter by Nathan Bing. Previously recording a DNP, Bing came into the 4th quarter and had his best performance in a Nuggets uniform, scoring 24 in the final period to be an unlikely hero. It's probable that he will take the starting point guard spot off the struggling Jesus Carlos after this game. He brought energy to what was otherwise a lackluster display from the Nuggets, with the next highest scorers being Carmelo Anthony (12) and Borislav Perko (10).

Atlanta's season to date might have led them to be second last in the East, but they put up a hell of a fight against the league's runaway leader thanks to Joshua O'Brien. He exploited Melo's often feeble defense to get 34 points and threatened to lead his side to one of the biggest upsets of the season. He had little support though, as Russell Westbrook (12) and Howard Ryan (10) were solid, but generally harmless.

There was a big discrepancy on the boards, with Atlanta's Bart Harvey absolutely dominating with 16. Denver's highest contributor in the field was Perko, but even he was down on his usual output with 7. It's something the Nuggets will have to address in order to avoid complacency.

I've Missed This Guy
Image
Borislav Perko only managed to add 1 triple-double to his tally this 5 game summary with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 16 assists against the Utah Jazz. However with a few close misses, he still remains on track to be the second ever to average a triple-double in a season.

The Texas Tormentor
Image
There's something about teams from Texas that T-Mac loves. He continued to give the Rockets nightmares with 34 points in their most recent clash.

Continuing To Work
Image
In Denver's loss to New Orleans, you couldn't fault Brandon Roy's effort. He scored 21 off the bench and looked to be closer to his best than we've seen in recent seasons.

A Welcome Back Is In Order
Image
Since coming back to Denver, JaVale McGee has proven to be the big man backup Dwight has needed. Against the Jazz, he shocked everyone with a dominant 20 point, 8 rebound effort. Amongst the plays he came up with was this pretty hook shot.

It's good to be back planning as a GM again. It's taking a little to get used to it again, since it's a much faster game than the 2k11 My Player, but hopefully I can get into a groove once again. Next up will be a 5 game summary if I can't think of anything else to put before then.

Had Westbrook and Ryan given more help to O'Brien, that could've most likely been an upset. Still, a nice show of resiliency to fight oppression from a lowly team. Sure wouldn't want Bing to replace Jesus in the starting lineup though. :|

Oh my God, it's 2020 already?!

Are jetpacks and hoverboards allowed in the Slam Dunk Contest? Will Blake Griffin be jumping on a small spaceship instead of a car this year? Is the Grizzlies Perko a clone of the Nuggets Perko (or vice versa)? Will Kobe try his hand at coaching?

So many questions ^_^

Not particularly anymore because I tend to run most of my offense through him to a point where he could be classified as a point forward. The hardest stat to get double-figures in is probably rebounds because Dwight Howard is such a big presense on the boards and he almost gets 10 of them without even breaking a sweat.

I think it's always the cellar dweller teams that give me the most grief because I always think it's an easy W. As for Bing, I'm sure there will be more twists and turns in the starting point guard race because he has yet to solidify his position as a starter.

The NBA commissioner is still a purist when it comes to technology taking over the actual gameplay. Blake Griffin will be jumping over Mecha Skip Bayless, the other Perko is a distant cousin and Kobe still cries himself to sleep about getting 83 scored on him... oh wait... wrong story. Anyway, I'm sure Kobe will have a go it at some point :P

5 Game Summary

It seems like 4-1 is the recurring win-loss record over 5 games and this summary is no exception. The Nuggets had a blowout first up win against Indiana. It really should have been 3-2, but some patented last second magic stole the win away from the Bucks in the second game. Unfortunately that clutch gene illuded them against the Warriors, where they went down by the slimmest of margins. The post Ollie Rose Clippers put up a good fight, but they could handle Denver's frontcourt, while victory against the Lakers never seemed in doubt.

The feature game is the close escape against the Bucks:

Nuggets Hunt Down Bucks

Image

On the brink of defeat, the Nuggets' Taylor MacKenzie hit the go ahead basket to give Denver an 83-82 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Losing by 82-81, Denver had the last play of the game:

phpBB [video]

Taylor MacKenzie ended up being the top scorer of the game with 27 points. After having an unusually erratic season, J.R. Smith showed glimpses of his best with 19. Carmelo Anthony contributed 13, which could be seen as an off night for him. Borislav Perko missed his triple-double by 4 points with 11 rebounds and 14 assists. His effort was still seen as good enough to win him Performer of the Game.

The Bucks had no dominant scorers, but they had 5 in double-figures to round out a solid team display. Willie Salisbury led the way with 16. Bertrand Durand had 14, while Eric Gordon and Bartholomew Meyer both scored 12 a piece. Blake Griffin was the last of their significant scorers, notching up a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though Denver came away with a win, they've had a habit lately of falling asleep against lesser teams and it took an absolute heart-in-mouth play to steal this one away from the 8th seeded Bucks.

Yesterday's Headliner
Image
The start of the 5 game summary looked promising for Carmelo Anthony as he scored 31 against the Pacers. However, in a team like this, these type of big performances are hard to get on a consistent basis.

Dwight Dominance
Image
He may have been against the tallest player in the NBA, but that would never phase Dwight Howard. Against the Clippers he terrorised Zach Pearson with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots

Another Starter?
Image
In the conversation for Denver's starting point guard, it seemed like Ed Reed was a forgotten man. But with his 20 points and 5 assists game in the loss to Golden State, this won't be the case anymore.

Instant Offense
Image
16 points might not sound like a lot (in fact, it's about Taylor's average this season), but MacKenzie has a knack for giving his side a boost off the bench... arguably the best in the league at doing so. His contribution put the Lakers in a world of hurt and they were unable to recover.

I have a little favour to ask; if you guys see the post count at 2448 or 2449, could you please hold off from posting? I wouldn't mind having the top of page 50 for a milestone-esque post. Andrew, is there a way you could possibly reserve the top of page 50 if I don't get the chance to in time?

Anyway, if the posts end up going into the 50th page, it's not a real big deal. Next post will either be a milestone or a 5 game summary :)

Yeah, a different star every game, this would confuse a lot of opponsing teams' coaches on who to stop.

COACH: OK, we need to stop Taylor. He obliterated us the last time we met.
ASSISTANT: Yeah, but it was Melo who tore it up the time before that.
STAR PLAYER: No, I think it's Jesus who should be stopped. I watched the Nuggets game yesterday, he was the beast!
ASSISTANT: What about Howard? He may be old, but he can still do a lot.
COACH: Eh, f**k it. Just stop them all.

It looks like I can pick it up myself (unless I get another few responses in the meantime).

The clutch moments definitely keep me coming back. The last NBA Live I played was 08 and amongst the other areas that game fell so hopelessly short, I was absolutely murdering all opposition on Superstar, so they only close games I got were playing against other user controlled teams. They are the most fun moments to play and they keep my mind ticking over with certain strategies and lineups. I think I've now established Taylor MacKenzie as my go-to-guy in the dying moments now. He's taken over Chauncey's role quite well now I think.

I love how Taylor has become the clutch guy. It really all started from his first game, but after a few mediocre seasons, I thought his rookie campaign might have been a fluke. Definitely glad to see that it wasn't. Zach Pearson is 7'6; he initally played for the Wizards and was quite a pain in the ass in the NBA Finals a couple of seasons ago. When you have to defend someone that big that can also step out to the perimeter, it's always a good challenge to try and stem his effectiveness.

It's funny because in the game that Reed stepped up, Perko also scored a triple-double. I somewhat have a policy to have one story per game and I don't like doubling up on one player in the report (unless they've starred in the feature game). I felt Reed's performance weighed heavier in the context of the dynasty because he really wasn't doing much up til that point.

I actually think that is how the Nuggets are currently in real life as well. At this moment of time, I really couldn't pin-point the MVP of Denver's roster. Sure you could say Ty Lawson or Nene, but you couldn't do it with any conviction I don't think. My roster at the moment is the more "Hollywood" version of the current real life team (thanks Joakim Noah  )

Martti. wrote:You have such a deep team no Perko sighting in this one. :D

Perko has actually been really consistent and as I mentioned, he had a triple-double against the Warriors, but I felt Reed's performance had more weight in the overall scheme of things because it means a possibility for another starting point guard. But yeah, it's definitely a team that I have here, instead of 2 or 3 big stars.

The funny thing is, he's more likely to hit a shot when he's off balance. I've seen him brick wide open jumpshots where he's had his feet set, but hit the most impossible bank shots.

Page 50!

The whole time after say about the 2440th post, I've been racking my brain to think of what I could write to do this milestone justice. Currently it's the only dynasty to reach 50 and the second active one to do so (even though I really thought Thierry was going to beat me to it), so it seemed like I needed to come up with something for this momentus post. Anyway, let's see how I go.

The Next Level Is Born

Almost 2 years ago I started this with next to no experience with writing dynasties, but it was one that was basically a year in the making. After years of frustration that Denver weren't getting out of the first round, I wanted to build a team that would get them over that hump and in the end, this is how the title "The Next Level" spawned. Also, I didn't think Denver were far away from being one of the main contending teams.

When I was bored at work and had nothing to do, I would write up the Denver roster and use the trade checker to see ways in which I could get the players I wanted to on it. But of course, none of the trades I planned actually went through, but not just because of the trade logic. When it comes down to it, if I got all the players I wanted, Denver would have had a really crappy team. I'm not mocking the abilities of Nathan Jawai, Luke Walton or Jason Kapono, but I don't think they would have taken my team to "The Next Level" so to speak.

During that same year the Nuggets made it to the Western Conference Finals and had a real great opportunity to knock off the Lakers. All the sudden, there was pressure for the first season of my dynasty: it seemed like they had reached the status of the contender. But with the health issues George Karl was having at the time, their momentum was really stifled. I feel a part of the reason why I have kept Karl for all this time is out of a great respect I have for him and his ability to overcome such adversity.

And that's generally all the lead up to how this was created. Reading Andrew's dynasties and his enthusiasm for the Chicago Bulls really rubbed off on me as well I think, so I owe a great deal to him as well.

Favourite moments?

Well, it's really hard to pin point what my exact favourite is, but off the top of my head, here's what stands out:

-Ty Maximilian's breakout playoffs campaign.
-Bring Marcus Camby back and getting him a ring.
-Getting Grant Hill multiple rings.
-Chauncey Billups' clutch shooting.
-Taylor MacKenzie's rookie campaign and his clutch performances in the 2020 playoffs.
-The emergence of the triple-double machine Borislav Perko.
-J.R. Smith's MVP season.
-Winning 3 in a row for the first time, then winning 4 (hopefully 5 in a row) a few years after that.

Least favourite moments?

Well, as much as I've enjoyed playing NBA Live 10, the game has a lot of flaws. I think the odd decision going against me because of an impossible play or glitchy AI logic have been frustrating, but with all the memorable plays, it doesn't particularly factor into the overall enjoyment.

Apart from that, any time I really couldn't update this thread for one reason or another was another down point of this dynasty for me.

Favourite Players?

It's really one of those cases where I think I've liked the generated more than the real. Ty Maximilian, Borislav Perko, Taylor MacKenzie, Ed Reed and to a lesser extent, George Power have all contributed to the longevity of this. I've grown sentimental attachments to these artificial people

As for the real players; pretty much the original 4 (Billups, Anthony, Smith and Birdman). Gotta love Marcus Camby as well. Shaq, Michael Beasley and Shannon Brown were all great fun to play with, but two that probably didn't get as much coverage as they should have were Matt Bonner and Andrei Kirilenko. Bonner was incredibly fun to launch threes with and Kirilenko really added an X-Factor off my bench during his stay... if he didn't ask for another ridiculous contract, he would have retired in Denver.

Shoutouts

I've always been reluctant to do these, because I never wanted to leave anyone out. But I'll see how I go and if I leave you out (and you had a significant role within the 50 pages), you can get at me via pm. Here goes:

Andrew: Without you there wouldn't be this creative outlet for me, as you've run easily the most enjoyable forum I have been on. But just mentioning that would be a disservice because you were one of my main influences for starting this and I always enjoy your enthusiasm as a reader. So thank you for running the best forum on the net and being a great person to converse with throughout the 50.

Thierry: One of my most loyal readers and you've been here since page 1. I take great joy in the fact that you've finally shown the commitment to one of your stories that you have to mine. I like to think I've somewhat inspired/encouraged you to do so, but who knows, that might just be my ego coming out. Keep the Spurs going and get my boy Timmy a 5th ring :)

Martti: Another one who has been around since page 1 and continues to read and contribute. I should probably hate you for winning the dynasty of the year over yours truly last year, but the Bucks story you had (or still have, I dunno) was truly worthy of the award. Your feedback and suggestions have helped shape "The Next Level" into the story it is today, so thank you.

Axel.: I actually see you as the greatest success of mine on the board. You've always cited me as your main influence and for a Hall of Famer to claim that, it's very humbling. I hope you continue on with your Rockets and at some point I'll submit my centre alter-ego "Kenê". Thanks for being the enthusiastic reader and contributor you have been since joining the forums.

Houndy: I'm always flattered by the fact that you pretty much joined this forum because of my story. You're another one of the great contributors that arrived a little later and have been as loyal as anyone on here. Sorry I couldn't win one for Dirk, but real life is where it really matters right?

Lamrock: Not too sure what's happening with you at the moment, but I always enjoy your input. Along the way your humorous remarks and style of association has influenced my own and I always find your stories to be compelling whether they succeed or get abandoned. I'm sure I speak for a lot of people on here when I say I'd love to see another from you sometime soon no matter what the result of it may be.

Phil89: Sounds kind of silly, but I saw you, Axel. and I as like the "Big 3" of the NBA Live 10 dynasties to come out. As your first OKC story developed, it inspired me to pick up my game a little because of the quality of how you presented it.

The X: I always enjoyed you reminiscing about the offline Nuggets dynasty you had that went for about this long and one day I'd love to see some screen shots of it (if it's possible). I'd like to thank you for being a positive contributor... and apologise in advance for the loss the Boomers will dish out to the Tall Blacks in Friday's game  I've probably jinxed them by saying that

Badger: Often misunderstood, but always entertaining. I always like your banter on my thread about how old my team is. I hope you've learned along the way that age is no barrier when it comes to building a team. Also, when I've typed my screen name on my iPhone, it has sometimes auto-corrected to Badger, so I shall know you as BadgeReligion from now on

dare: Back when I started, your T-Wolves thread was kicking some ass and it's probably the first I kept reading in depth as it was getting updated. It was also the first thread I registered as an NLSC draft pick, so it was pretty influential to this dynasty in it's own right.

Sit: The GOAT, the benchmark, A.W. (you know what that stands for)... whatever I choose to call you, you've become a good friend over the past year or so. You don't particularly contribute to this one all that much, but your associations are continuing to set the standard on the board.

Grand Theft 2K11 : DUB Edition: Your posts have provided me with a lot of amusement since you started contributing on this thread and you could just about make a story out of them yourself. Your offbeat remarks continue to keep me entertained, so thank you.

I'd also like to thank the following, whether they are current contributors or past ones:

| Valdis | George7 | Cruzerr | Clutch | Larvae | qfrmcpt310 | Mavs4Life | Justine | z02 | Rta | Azzdogs | Clutch | megarover | Wyze | .PorkyJoker.o6 | King Dee |

-To anyone new I haven't mentioned, I do apologise. If you stick with my dynasty, I'll do my best to get to you in the 100th page.

50 down... 50 more to go?

I'm almost at the halfway point of the 12th season of this dynasty. I'm looking to complete the 25. How many will get simmed is still to be seen, but right now I feel as if my commitment to this hasn't died at all. So far I've dealt with a missing disc and a "TV scare", so hopefully nothing else can stop this from going *knock on wood*.

On that note, I shall wrap this up. Thanks to everyone who has come along for the ride so far. Hopefully there is a lot more to come and even more readers to mention in number 100.

:chug:

Great milestone post, thanks for the kind words! It's always good to hear that people are enjoying themselves on the Forum and I think the longevity of this Dynasty thread speaks volumes about your enjoyment and dedication. It's flattering to hear my stuff gave you some ideas, too. I hope you can make it through all 25 years with a combination of simming and playing, that'd really be something. :)

Those are some well chosen favourite moments. This truly has been a Dynasty in every sense of the word, one of the best uses of generated players in all the Dynasty threads we've seen and full of so many exciting moments to read about (and no doubt play as well). Like I said I hope you can make all 25, this one's Hall of Fame bound regardless but that'd be amazing. Keep up the great work!

I remember my Bucks story and this went down to the wire last year, yours was my favorite if that's any consolation. :D Yours would win this year, hands down.

Should I even start a topic this year? I had them in October usually. :D

This has been great to follow, I hope this goes on for many, many seasons more. (Y)
