Hey, O'Brien did say that next time a player would get more than a hefty fine (Maxwell was fined the equivalent of about $6000 today):

"Regardless of the provocation," NBA Comr. Larry O'Brien commented from New York, "players must avoid confrontations with the fans in the stands, and any player engaging in similar conduct in the future will have even more severe penalties."

Guy threw something at Maxwell and then said a few racist things (as Philly fans...and Boston fans...automatically do when they see a black person not on their own teams) IIRC.

Indiana fans too(not surprising considering the history of that state). They said some wonderful things about Ewing and the Knicks when the rivalry was at its height. And I remember some Pacer fan hurling racial slurs at Iverson.

In Kareem's autobiography, 'Giant Steps', folks in Phoenix were pretty ignorant too, saying shit like "N*****bockers".
