Comics Thread?

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

copied from /co/

Initiative = Everyone is an Avenger
Secret Invasion = Everyone is a Skrull
World War Hulks = Everyone is the Hulk
Fear Itself = Everyone is Thor
Infested = Everyone is Spider Man

marvel needs some new fucking ideas...this spidey infested arc just makes me want to stop reading ongoing comics all together. I dont so much mind limited stuff with a more set plan (sandman/preacher) for example.

But Spideys, Spideys Everywhere

Just started Transmetropolitan...had anyone recommended earlier in the thread? because dear god so far it's awesome. Right up my alley with the heavy futuristic dystopia and Hunter Thompson influence.

I said it was on my to read list a couple times. Never got to it.

Haven't read comics in a long while really, wasting time on too much other crap when I have such glorious things waiting for me.

I really need to get back to it.

Thought i posted this yesterday but never got around to it.

Read the Ultimate Universe from issue #1 through ultimatum over the past couple months. Pleasantly surprised by how good they were. Towards the end they started to be off and Ultimatum was pretty terrible.

Started Y The Last Man. Having trouble sticking to it.

Intend to restart fables and try to finish through the issues i have right now.

I read Old Man Logan the other day, it was awesome. I downloaded the Civil War series, the torrent has it in chronological order with all of the different comics the storyline features in (not just the Civil War ones) so hopefully it'll make more sense. Will have to check it out when I can be bothered reading 700 comic books.

Civil War is decent. Could have been written a bit better since the idea itself is pretty interesting....

But watching superheroes kick the crap out of each other sure is pretty good.

Does anyone know if DareDevil is any good again after the whole Matt Murdock got possessed by some demon bull shit?

Right but the sides were arbitrary. You need actual character motivation and sensible actions to make the event hit home and feel real. It just felt ilke a giant clusterfuck they had to retcon their way out of (which they did didnt they?)

Been reading Geoff Johns Green Lantern run leading up to sinestro corps and intend to read blackest night and brightest day. Good stuff so far. Although i thought secret origins kinda sucked so im not surprised no one liked the movie

I loved Batman Hush. I like Batman but I've never really checked out some of the older story arcs like Knightfall. I'll be sure to check it out!

From that Stephen Curry thread in NBA Talk.
shadowgrin wrote:That guy in the video is Gerry Alanguilan.

He's also the
creator of arguably the greatest graphic novel in Philippine comics history. Titled Elmer, which is the story of a talking chicken.

http://www.alanguilan.com/sanpablo/elmer/about.html

ELMER is a window into an alternate Earth where chickens have suddenly acquired the intelligence and consciousness of humans, where they consider themselves a race no different from whites, browns or blacks, and push to recognize rights for themselves as the newest members of the human race.

ELMER tells the story of a family of chickens who live and struggle to survive in a suddenly complicated, dangerous and yet beautiful world.

You can take the story seriously if not you can just laugh at the absurdity of it. Either way I enjoyed it.

So me and shadow talked a bit about Fables and I came back in here to find that Snow White image I posted back in the day, and well, seeing it broken and fixing it led me to skimming through the thread. Realized I had been so neglecting comics over the last few months.

Specifically this:
Got through No Man's Land

one of the best events ive ever read.

And probably the best you'll read. When it comes to the standard superheroes. Batman's the only character you could even dare write a story like that with and have it work. You start doing stuff with other characters and you get into powers and cosmic crap and etc.

No Man's Land allows Batman to "win" but slowly, in a long slog, that makes him rely on others, and doesn't come for free.

I read Preacher finally months ago and...

There is so much I hate but so much I love at the same time.

I hate the entire plot, the story, it's disjointed and seems to have no clue what it is doing.

The individual parts, the smaller arcs, are all very well done.

How do I bring together the fact he has this amazing skill and powers and can fleet all over the planet at whim storming compounds and yet also need to hide and take down time and re-learn, with his friends also bouncing all over the place. And things are entirely realistic but wait they're totally magical but check this out it's all realistic including the nuke but wait. And like it's all gods plan but until wait I forgot what I was writing are there like angels and shit? No no no, demons, DEMONS, wait, no ANGELS. And like Jesus and shit. Oh fuck it, let's hug it out, bitch.

Oh, and that's his mom.

And that other chick, she's a Nazi.

I dunno, I'm rambling off of memory a bit down the road.

Thanos stories has always been good considering I don't like stories involving 'space' that much in comics.

I don't usually but these guys use a lot more character than "SPAAAAAAAAACE" from what i've read so far. Rocket Raccoon alone is enough reason to check it out.

Is this the order that I should follow if I want to follow the Batman mythos?

Also if I don't want to follow that, what is the good Batman or any Spidey comic you will recommend if I'm going to buy one?

Yeah I'd follow that order to follow the batman mythos but its not that necessary to go in order if you know the basics. This does give you a great sense of the different robins and some side bat family characters though..

As far as spidey goes...I'd honestly start with the Ultimate line at #1. Its slightly different from "classic" spidey like AMS but i found the early issues of AMS to be absolutely brutal reading. I only read them due to love of the character. Another thing you could do: apparently there's a spiderman season 1 thats supposed to retell Spideys origin and stuff. Avoid "One More Day" like the plague in my opinion. If you're just looking for a random plotline i enjoyed the back in black story arc (but it does lead into one more day)

A Lonely Place of Dying should be marked, it's not a great story but it's the introduction of Tim Drake and starts an important arc.

It's also using the trade names, Knightfall goes into Knightquest and Knightsend (which are chopped up and I think in the third trade) and will make no sense later if you don't read those with it.

I know they aren't great but Contagion and Legacy I think are proper openers to No Man's Land, and Cataclysm is a must because it's hardly long and is actually the first chapter of No Man's Land.

The trades for NML are also missing about 10% of the plot.

I liked Murderer and Fugitive even if it is too long because of how it ties into Cassandra's arc and then also sets up the awesome Checkmate reboot.

Identity Crisis only mildly ties into Batman but is one of the best DC stories.

We've already talked about War Games/Crimes and Under the Hood is the follow-up to Hush. (Which gets another follow up later.)

I think the image predates Morrison taking over, but Face the Face, Batman and Son, RIP, etc. all come from his era and end in Final Crisis which reboots Batman until the DC reboot, was discussed earlier in the thread how that works out.

For Infinite Crisis, the relevant and awesome Batman story is The OMAC Project, which has more to do with JLA Batman than Batman Batman and is the direct sequel to Murderer/Fugitive and leads to Checkmate.

Speaking of Greg Rucka, there's the set in Gotham, barely involving Batman, but fantastic award winning Gotham Central. Which really should be a must for anyone that likes Batman. (Rucka's run on Wonder Woman is also great stuff from what I read for Infinite Crisis.)

There's also some great stuff in Legends of the Dark Knight and Batman Confidential, like "Prey", that flesh out the time period between Year One/Long Halloween and everything else.
