Lawrence Frank, shown here while an assistant with the Boston Celtics, is expected to become the new coach of the Detroit Pistons, sources tell ESPN.com.
ESPN.com reported last week that the Pistons had narrowed their search down to Frank and Woodson and that Frank had made a strong impression on the Pistons' new ownership. That nudged the Boston Celtics assistant coach ahead of Woodson, who sources said was the preferred choice of longtime Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars.
As the link states, Larry beats out Mike Woodson for the opportunity to coach 9 small forwards. I like the signing, it's a young coach with experience, something this organization needs. He's coached big personalities and good teams with Kidd-Carter-Jefferson and those mid-2000s Nets' teams. He was kind of scapegoated towards the end of his tenure there, partially because his teams were losing, and partially because he was coaching Bobby Simmons and Yi.
I think Frank has improved as a coach, both as an Xs and Os guy and with his player interaction during is year with Doc Rivers and the Celtics.
It's got Pistons' fans all worked up because it's not a sexy hire, but really, what else is out there? Woodson would only extend the idea that the hard working, defense-first Pistons of 2004 were somehow going to reappear. Don't even get me started on Laimbeer. I tweeted that he would be a horrible choice a few months ago, and his daughter saw it and tweeted back that I was a hater
