Professional Wrestling (WWE, TNA, ROH, etc)

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

well in the early to mid 90s, i think the backstage 1 minute promo with mean gene was more prevalent (and what i think they need now). in the attitude era, they had a bunch of guys like rock, stone cold, y2j, etc that were the best at promos so it seemed like the wwe started doing the longer in-ring ones to let them do what they do best and it worked because like andrew said they were very entertaining. that's obviously left over from then but now we have to listen to those in-ring promos from guys with average mic skills like shaemus, swagger, miz, rhodes, etc. seems like heels show up in suits like jericho started to do and now they say a sentence about how the fans are dumb and wait 30 seconds between sentences to let people boo them.

i totally agree with jao. back then it esemed like there was an actual booker who booked matches for guys every week. you'd get guys like barry horowitz, jeff hardy, brooklyn brawler and other jobbers with no entrance music already be in the ring when they come back from a commercial and then the superstar comes out and beats them. they need to have the nxt guys or guys on Superstars like Yoshi Tastu or DHS or Zack Ryder job for the midcard to build them up. if you don't have a storyline about you nowadays you get lost in the shuffle like Ted Dibiase

Yeah, that seems totally forgotten about. Running a wrestling company seems to simply involve hiring an arena, selling tickets, making sure the roster is there, then waiting until two people starting fighting with each other, sending out a referee, and ringing the bell.

That's a hangover from the Monday Night Wars. RAW used to be like that but then Nitro came along and went in a different direction with high profile TV matches and they began to win the ratings war. They'll still have the occasional jobber used like that or a midcard talent will get that kind of treatment (entrance during the commercial break, not much of a match) but it's a little different to the old approach. It's not always a bad thing, especially when there are a lot of names they want to get out on TV.

I'd say it explains a lot of things that happen on camera and reportedly behind the scenes in TNA. For all the talk that Bischoff and Hogan have learned from their past mistakes, it doesn't seem like they did.

So I just watched this week's SmackDown...in a little under 45 minutes.

What reason does anyone actually have to buy this PPV? Edge and Del Rio are focused on Clay and Christian, Cena and Miz are focused on Rock, Guerrero and Snooki are Guerrero and Snooki, Shawn Michaels is the only one who seems to have realised that HHH and Undertaker have a match...King/Cole is the only match that's actually been built to so far, and will suck tremendously.

75 minutes into iMPACT!, the first match starts. It's a triple-threat between three heels.

Is there any decent wrestling anywhere?

Jim Ross Says He Is Not Broadcasting At Wrestlemania XXVII

Jim Ross wrote the following on Twitter last night:

Don't know how much clearer I can make this 2 all. I am NOT broadcasting @ WM27. I'm doing Axxess appearences Fri nite & Sat am w/ King.

I guess the possibility always exists that it might be a swerve or plans may change, but having said that I have a sinking feeling it isn't and they won't.

I'd imagine Cole and King will be on the call too. My guess is that Cole will have the call until his match with King, get his comeuppance and then sit out the rest of the night.

D'Angelo Dinero vs Samoa Joe at Lockdown

Streak vs Submission INSIDE A STEEL CAGE BROTHER

Seriously TNA, come up with your own shit.

Hey we have a big star coming back too and he had a shorter hiatus!

Did you know Dinero had a winning streak at Lockdown? Neither did I but fuck it, he's as big as 'taker to us so it should be important to the fans!

Yea, when I was a kid and ran a "federation" with my buddies in all of the AKI games, we mimicked the storylines we were watching on TV, but at least we could pick and choose from 3 televised companies.

If it weren't for a curiosity of Kong in WWE, I think I'd be "done" with wrestling right now. Ever since I read that thing about how WWE doesn't want to be called a "Wrestling Company" anymore so they can be classified as an "Entertainment Company" shows that they are pushing towards what I've been hating about WWE, blah blah blah blah blaaah, and no wrasslin. PG is one thing but they are coming real close to becoming how Southpark portrayed WWE. And with TNA just blatantly copying WWE...yea, the sometimes great wrestling matches aren't worth it.

Maybe I should watch some CZW; "attitude" era matches, and fans that realize they are watching a show, chanting "you fucked up" rather than pretending a botch didn't just happen.
Opinions are my own.

I am underwhelmed with how the WM27 card got up. Disappointed too, on where Morrisson landed in the pay per view when he should be the guy facing Miz. I think they should not worry about the draw of the PPV if Cena is not in the main event since they can build up stars that quick.

Morrisson is somehow the Benjamin of the current WWE.

They did that initially to skimp on taxes. Entertainment events are (were?) taxed less compared to 'sporting' events like wrasslin'.

pretty much EVERY mid-carder is now a Shelton Benjamin. they save all the TV time for the boring main event storylines and repeat the same damn promos & recaps every week. what they did this week with the women's match (maryse already in the ring as they come back to commercial as eve comes out to beat her) should be done more often for midcarders instead of showing a long ass video about people talking about HHH vs taker.

another way to skimp under sports regulations too maybe?

yeah perhaps they don't have to be sanctioned by the state sports commission unlike the UFC which has yet to be accepted in certain states. plus, the blood rules might be relaxed since they're "entertainment"

Yeah that was a laughable statement from their PR rep and ironically, does very little in terms of garnering good PR. With hardcore fans, at any rate.

Meanwhile, Miz on Conan:

The catchphrase he came up with for Conan is better than his own. It still surprises me how over the "awesome" stuff is, as I've said before wrestling catchphrases are seldom deep but it's as generic as it gets.

Well its a heel catchphrase. So people could boo it because they Xpac Heat hate it, and like Vickie,WWE doesnt have a clue.
