How Playable is NBA 2K11 without Gamepad on PC?

Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:24 pm

So I am going to buy NBA 2k11 for PC soon but I dont have a gamepad. I was just wondering though if there are going to be a lot of limitations if I only use keyboard for gameplay. If yes, then are they pretty major limitations? Either way pls let me know what type of things I might be missing out on other than the "more fun/easier" to play with gamepad part.

I think the keyboard is overly limited due to the removal of the "Alternate A" control scheme seen in 2k10 and 2k9. That means dribble moves on the sticks need to be emulated by key gestures rather than pressing a button like last year.

If you get a controller, the wired and wireless (with receiver) 360 controllers are finally officially supported by the game.

It's worth the buy I say.

a gamepad or 2k11 with only the keyboard?

I would surely advise to buy the game (even if you don't have a gamepad)!

The game is great without a gamepad: I played 2k9 and half year of 2k10 without a gamepad (only bought the gamepad so I could play it with my friends offline - online isn't working). There is even some advantages playing with a keyboard (i.e. you don't have to press 4 buttons with moving around 1 finger, you can use all your fingers).

The only advantage of a gamepad is that maybe the directions of movement are more presice and you can alter the moving speed with the sticks.... plus behind-the-back and spin moves are easier....

for me:
no gamepad? = no problem ;)

I really don't know how you can play 2k11 without game pad... i mean, 2k10 was still ok, but now to do behind the back, crossover, spin move, whole iso-motion is screwed up on keyboards. And in nba 2k11 iso-motion is the most important aspect of the game, u can't score a single point without it (excluding the post)

Agree! The only difference is you can't do spin move and behind the back dribble in keyboard.

I can score on my player and even BREAK ANKLES using keyboard only.
So, 2k11 is certainly playable w/o gamepad but it is certainly much better with gamepad.

I stand by my statement :D Having tried both keyboard and gamepad, it takes about 2 secs to do what only takes a moment on the gamepad :)

I was referring to not being able to "score a single point" without using isomotion. I can score points not using isomotion by calling for plays or use directional icon passing for spot up shooters or cuts to the basket.

Pad or no pad, players who foul out can remain in the game.

^Even in association!? I never fouled out anybody yet in association. But on my player, it's useless.:/

I had another question guys.....Does the PC version have the real daily NBA schedule games available to be played if you have an internet connection like 360 version? oh and plus does the commentary in the game also talk about their real life performances from recent NBA games?

bowdown, Yes on both of them.

I had a side question.
Why is using .exe cracks so strictly against the rules? I understand you do not want to promote piracy but you guys don't even like to entertain the idea of Installing the game through legit means and then using a crack so one doesn't have to put the disc in every time which is annoying.

OH and one more question

Im guessing the NBA Today feature will become obsolete after this regular season (around 5 games left) ends. Am I right?

Re: How Playable is NBA 2K11 without Gamepad on PC?

We not only don't want to promote piracy, but we don't want to support it either. The rule has been here since the site started and isn't going to change, ever. Even if you think you have legit means, we can't force check every member to make sure they bought the game, so a zero tolerance policy is by far the easiest to police the masses.

NBA Today will update with the playoffs iirc.

So next season it will become obsolete right?

correct, that is when you buy 2k12

Yeah I am not having a lot of fun right now playing with just keyboard. The only dribble I can do is normal directional keys to move player around and the hopstep.

I dont know how to do any other type of dribbling. Plus IDK how to do playcalling in this. In older NBA Lives I could just press 1,2,3,4 for plays such as Isolation, Pick n Roll, Pick n Pop, Post Up. But I have no idea how to do it in this game.

The game is still keeping me interested and I am losing games by like 5 points or so. But it is very one dimensional gameplay with keyboard and I am not willing to explore the features in this game other than Quick Match until I get a controller. Im going to wait till this school term is over to get one so I can sit down and indulge in the details of this game with a controller

It looks like that the keyboard is not the problem. Again, the only things you can't do with the keyboard that you can do with a joystick are the spin moves and behind the back dribble. You can still do the other isomotions and offensive moves although it is easier for a lot of people if using a joystick. Practice is very very underrated...
