Super Bowl Re-Matches Thread

I'll provide more info, but these are just exhibition games with Super Bowl rematches between teams from past super bowls.

The Indianapolis Colts prepare to kickoff to the New Orleans Saints and begin the 44th super bowl in NFL history.



The Saints started fast, on their second play Drew Brees threw a screen pass to Marques Colston who dodged out of a tackle and ran with it 38 yards to pick up a very big first down, however, the Colts defense held up and the Saints settled for a 43 yard field goal, and a 3-0 lead with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLIV.



The Colts had their own ideas, Pierre Garcon ran back the kickoff 98 yards to give the Colts a 7-3 lead with 7:59 remaining.



After two brief drives by the Saints and Colts, the Saints began driving again, this time after two 6 yard passes to Devery Henderson and Jeremy Shockey, Brees connected on a 21 yard pass to fullback Heath Evans. On the next play Brees threw a screen pass to Robert Meachem who almost reached the endzone after a 7 yard reception, but on the next play the Colts sacked Brees for a 8 yard loss, the Saints now settled for their second field goal, and trailed 7-6 with 1:41 remaining.

With just that much time remaining in the first quarter, the Saints outgained the Colts, 97-2 in total yards, but that didn’t stop the Colts who put together a massive 11 play 67 yard drive, which was spurred on by a 37 yard reception to Dallas Clark after a out-of-sync drive with his other receivers, the Saints however, played good redzone defense and made the Colts kick the 22 yard field goal with 9:23 left in the second quarter.

After both teams drives stalled somewhere near midfield, the Colts went on the attack again with roughly 5 minutes left, Manning embarked on a 13 play drive, this time taking up 4:40 of clock time and working the Saints defense for 84 yards, Manning completed a 23 and 13 yard passes to Reggie Wayne on separate occasions and then Joseph Addai gashed the Saints defense for 28 yards, before going back to Reggie Wayne for a 6 yard touchdown pass with 1:46 left in the second quarter to give the Colts a 17-6 lead.



But never count these Saints out, Brees connected with Colston on a 26 yard pass and then again three plays later a 22 yard pass before finding Robert Meachem in the endzone for a 14 yard touchdown reception with just 50 seconds left, the Saints were trailing 17-12. At halftime the Saints had just 7 first downs and 9 total rushing yards.



The Saints get ready to start the second half after the halftime show by The Who.



The Saints started strong, after being sacked on the second play, Brees found tight end Jeremy Shockey open for a huge 34 yard gain, and then two plays later for another 20 yard gain, which then brought a endzone defensive pass inference call, as cool as Brees was, he found Meachem open in the far left corner to give the Saints a 19-17 lead after a 8 play 65 yard drive.



Nothing much happened after that, both defenses came alive and were sacking and hitting opponents and every opportunity, with 8:18 remaining in the fourth and final quarter of XLIV, Brees ran for a 25 yard gain which made the Saints fans go wild, Brees would later complete an 11 yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston giving the Saints a 26-17 lead with just 6:12 left in the game.



Moments like these are what makes you great, trailing 26-17 and on your own 20 yard line with 2:49 remaining, the Colts began to drive to tie up the score and hopefully take it to overtime.

It wouldn’t end like Manning would want, the Saints forced the Colts to kick it at their own 40 and the Saints had one last opportunity to bring its first championship to New Orleans.

Garrett Hartley kicked a 49 yard field goal with 1:36 left in the game to give the Saints a 29-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.



Drew Brees was awarded the MVP.
