Skynet is real!

Wed Feb 16, 2011 5:47 pm

anybody see the IBM-built Watson computer absolutely destroy Ken Jennings & the othe rdude on Jeopardy?

it's pretty interesting to see human vs machine and although i don't know the exact mechanics of it, i think Watson might have a slight advantage as far as buzzing in is concerned

Agreed, I'd have to assume it would have the advantage when it comes to buzzing in and wouldn't suffer from mental blanks or forgetting to phrase answers as questions, unless it was specifically to designed to ape human error in that regard.

I wonder why they named the computer after me? :P

Don't be shocked when a woman named Sarah comes knocking at your door carrying a shotgun.

It did. It was ludicrously fast when buzzing in. They had a display that said how sure the computer was that it had the right answer and everytime it was sure, it was able to ring in faster than either of the other players. Every. Time.
Also the logic isn't completely there yet. It got most of the questions right, but the wrong answers are WAYYYYYY off.

Oh no its going to assault me with trivia!!! Wait...it cant even hear or see me

*unplugs Watson*

Humans win.

I just watched it and i was pretty underwhelmed. The programming language is kinda cool ill admit but theres key components of the game it either seems to be at an unfair advantage (as mentioned previously, buzzing. How long does it take a cpu to read a text file? much less 2800 cpus) or disadvantage (knowing what the other players said)

The game would be more fair if they plugged in the two human contestant's brains and were directly fed the question. I beg to differ that it would be an advantage for the computer if it were able to "hear" the other contestants. Being able to hear the other contestants would mean more processing time to convert Trebek's speech to text and to aptly reassess the weight it has given to it's own answers. Also, to be absolutely far, they should also attach a robotic arm to the computer, because the coordination with the hand to buzz in also takes some time.

But most of the time while watching I was lolling at Jennings's frustration of not being able to buzz in on time. He was basically throwing his hand up in the air.
