Computer shuts down

Postby Otsa on Tue Feb 08, 2011 7:20 am

Hey,got this problem that while playing NBA 2k11 in 2nd or 3rd quarter my computer shuts down. At first nothing was wrong with the game,I got it when it came out, the problem started like 2 weeks ago.
canirunit.com shows that my computer is capable of running it with max settings. I've tried with the lowest settings, windowed mode,it still shuts down my computer.
Anyways here are my specs:
32-bit Win 7
AMD Athlon II X2 245 Processor-2.9 GHz
RAM: 2048 MB
GeForce 9500 GT
At first I thought some patch caused it and uninstalled the game but it didn't help.
Can anyone help me?

how much free space do you have on your computer? the only thing i can think of is the game's cache is taking up too much space

maybe try using system restore to a date a few weeks ago when the game was still working?
Opinions are my own.

I deleted cache and I got over 50 GBs of free space on my HDD. Still happens.
I haven't tried the quick game option but the game doesn't make my computer shut down while playing myplayer. Happens in association every time and I have tried to play with several teams.

now does your computer actually blue screen and shut all the way down so it needs to restart? or does the game just crash

No,my computer just shuts down. I need to press the power button to start it again.
As far as I see it happens with any team.
I re-installed the game again, didn't download any new rosters or sliders. Played the Bulls-Lakers game that comes up. Made it into the 3rd quarter and my computer shut down again.

I have no idea what may cause this.

In my opinion, it sounds a bit like your computer is overheating. Overheating causes sudden computer shut down. I experienced this with my laptop, but after I modded it for better airflow it does not overheat/shut down during gaming anymore. Try installing a temperature reading app, maybe something like Real Temp and see what your temperatures are.

^ This

Could also bee that your PSU (power suplly) can't handle the peak demands from you GPU + PSU, ?I would try to install a stress test or benchmark and see if the PC can run it without crashing

http://downloads.guru3d.com/OCCT-(OverC ... cking-Tool)-3.0.0-download-1880.html

might do the trick

good luck!

^^Agreed. Are you using a laptop? How old is it? I'm pretty sure it's new because of the OS. If it's a laptop:Put something underneath your laptop, so it won't overheat. And for PC, try to clean it up and buy a new Power supply.

Don't use your PC for a week or two.(Won't work, I think.)

Yes,it's overheating. It's a PC. I opened it up and cleaned from the dust but it didn't help much. Any ways to fix this without buying new fans or something?

ok,I tried to play again. I left the OCCT program open that Toaster gave the link to (didn't do that test, just left it open and moved it to my TV so I could check it at all times) . My CPU temp got as high as 79.5 (mostly at 77-78) and GPU got as high as 77 (mostly was in 73-74) and I was able to complete the game.
Are those temperatures normal?

Great support their, Basterd. Way to help. :shake:

Those temperatures are not normal unless they are Fahrenheit. If that is Celsius, that is like 180 degrees Fahrenheit. 2K11 is not the most stable game for people who like to overclock(well in my experience, too much caused the game to crash or restart my computer), so I assume it doesn't do very well with the heat, while other games might be able to deal with it, although I'm not sure why. Run the game in Windowed mode and bring up the Windows Task Manager, and take a look at the cpu usage of nba2K11.exe. You can also look at the Windows Event Viewer and look for errors around the time the game shut down and you might be able to narrow down the problem.

I wouldn't immediately call out these temps as abnormal since , although certainly on the high side, different chipsets have different normal temperature ranges.
If the OP could share his specs it might help us provide more useful insight into the problem.

Now, new fans are generally not too expensive as the retail at 10-20$ as far as I know (depends on where you live of course).
Bear in mind that those costs are marginal compared to those of replacing a fried pc...

If you have trouble identifying your components you can try:

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

this tool also helps monitor temps

Thanks for all of the help guys. I think I got my problem fixed. I cleaned the fans once more and made them tottally clean. Played a game and the temp. was normal the whole time (searched on google what's good and what's not) . Once again, many thanks. :D Need to clean my computer more often
