Loving the Melo-Billups-Rip trio in NJ. Hopefully Billups doesn't ask for a buyout.

How many times have we seen that headline? Why are we making such a big deal over a guy who is less valuable than Kevin Martin?

To be truthful, I would rather have Carmelo than Kevin on my team.

i totally agree.

and why is denver trying to play the tough guy here and holding up the deal? they are the ones that should be in desperation mode because they'll wind up with nothing if they don't trade him by the deadline

Masai Ujiri is playing himself into a really really tough tenure if he and the Nuggets continue to be difficult. This constant indecision isn't going to deter teams from pursuing Carmelo, but I think future trades could be harder to work out because teams have seen how horribly this one has been handled.

I know, I know, it's Carmelo, but the way everything is being handled hasn't helped create a good image around the L for Ujiri, IMO.

.
The source who discussed Billups believes Harris then would be moved to Portland in a package for Nicolas Batum, who would be Anthony's replacement at small forward (another player, such as point guard Andre Miller, would have to be thrown in to make the salaries match). The source, who believes the Trail Blazers are on board with that, said Harris wouldn't be needed in Denver because of Lawson being earmarked as the future starter.

Ujiri thinks he can get all the pieces he needs to have a playoff team instead of rebuilding. He even threatened. the Nets, telling them to shut up or they'll trade Melo to the Knicks.

If I were Ujiri I'd also tell Billy King to shut up.

Where does this negative Carmelo stigma derive from around here? I've noticed that no one here likes him. I know, all the super duper statistical stuff might say he's not good, but really, if you're building a team, do you really want Kevin Martin or someone over him? I mean, he's been in the playoffs every year of his career, he's one of the best clutch players in the NBA, he scores and rebounds at an above average rate for his position, and outside of this whole trade process he hasn't really been a chemistry-killer.

If you think about it, he's never had a legitimate second scorer nor has he had the always talked about post presence that super stars supposedly need to succeed at a championship level. I'm not sure a Bosh comparison is necessarily true; Bosh got a mediocre team to the playoffs once, Carmelo did it multiple times early in his career.

I'm just curious as to why he's looked at so negatively around here.

You're not alone, I like him too.

But his Efficiency/advanced stats are shit and objectively based on those alot of people here dislike him.

I'm actually with you as well, Melo is probably called overrated enough to be slightly underrated. He does have his flaws and I'm not about to dismiss the advanced stats either, but I'd still call him a legitimate star player in the league, someone who can play both forward spots, grabs a decent number of rebounds, can flat out score with respectable range and gets to the free throw line where he's a solid foul shooter. He's by no means a stellar defender, but he gets by. Looking at the run the Nuggets made in the 2009 Playoffs, I'd suggest he's at least capable of being a valuable cog on a team that has the right pieces, though whether he can carry a team is certainly open to debate.

I think a lot of the criticism of Melo and similar players comes from equating average (or worse) efficiency with being devoid of talent, which isn't necessarily the case. A player may have the tools but not use them particularly effectively, so to speak. I also think part of the criticism comes from the tendency to talk in absolutes and extremes that's prevalent in online discussion; something's either good or bad, or more commonly awesome or terrible.

Too bad the number of people around here who actually seem to understand "super duper statistical stuff" can be counted on less than a handful of fingers and that most who proclaim to do so are simply lashing out due to their teenage angst that makes them fight with all of life, the failure of their franchises and ever ready effort to find confirmation bias.

The remaining people are making a mistake of believing the loudest statements being the most truthful instead of applying their own efforts.

Carmelo Anthony's efficiency is not shit, sane people can look at data and recognize outliers. In 2008 he was injured and played his way back and tore it up in the playoffs farther than the Nuggets have ever gone. And this year everyone with any sense of the real world knows he's merely going through the motions because he can't wait for a trade to the Knicks.

The only overrating comes because Knicks fans under the age of 25 are involved and that's all they can do ever. Because that's been their entire life almost. And they're riding a little wave of, hey, maybe we might matter without LeBron after all!

If Masai Ujiri wants 5 first round picks for Melo, Ujiri is going to make a team like Michael Jordan wants to make Bobcats the team of young guys and a street basketball team.

Anthony is going to be traded to the cavs, stay for seven years, and then when the cavs are close to winning a championship he'll leave to play in Miami.

Yeah, my point is advanced statistics don't explain the entire story... if they did Mareese Speights would be an All-Star.
