A bit absurd in my opinion. 5 first rounders?

Didn't the Nets trade K-Mart for 3 first rounders?

5 does sound a bit too much to ask for. I thought 3 was a lot back when that trade happened.

well the Nets have the following

2011 first round draft pick from L.A. Lakers
2012 first round draft pick from Golden State
2012 first round draft pick from Houston

Plus their own first round picks for the next two years

If it was straight up for Melo, I'd do it for 4.
Opinions are my own.

Both Houston's and GS's should be protected, IIRC both lottery protected with descending protections.

It's a lot to ask for but given some of the previous deals involving a lot of first round picks (Kenyon Martin and Eddy Curry come to mind), I don't think it's that unreasonable to be honest. Five rolls of the dice in the first round of the NBA Draft over a few years for a proven player like Melo may well end up benefiting the Nets more than the Nuggets. Even if they'll ultimately have to settle for less, there's no reason for the Nuggets to lowball themselves right off the bat.

Also at the same site here's the proposed deal that's gonna go down.
Detroit gets-Troy Murphy Johan Petro
Denver gets-2 1st round draft picks from New Jersey, Devon harris, Derrick Favors, Anthony Morrow, Ben Uzoh, Stephen Graham and Quinton Ross
New Jersey gets-Carmelo Athony, Richard Hamilton, Chauncy Billups, Anthony Cartor, Sheldon Williams.

The nets are still trying to get Chris Paul as well.

I would prefer having Devin Harris over Chauncy Billups. Harris has better stats, a much lower paycheck than Billups.

5 first- round draft picks is a lot ... I mean if the first round picks turned out to be all in the 1 - 5 range ... I would really be pissed.

I have to agree with Andrew on what he said about the picks being dices. But you may never know, one of those picks could house a future Jordan, Bryant, or James.

Nets ‘real close’ to landing Anthony

The proposed trade will send Anthony, Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Nuggets guard Anthony Carter and forward Shelden Williams to the Nets. The Nuggets will receive two first-round picks from the Nets, point guard Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, guards Anthony Morrow, Ben Uzoh, Stephen Graham and Quinton Ross. The Pistons will get Murphy and Petro.

Pretty good all around. The Nets probably get the best of the deal in the short term but the Pistons get to move Hamilton for expiring contracts and the deal facilitates a rebuilding phase for the Nuggets.

from now until February 18, yes. He probably won't get THAT much more PT though, his body is holding up well at the current pace, I don't think Joe D wants that ruined. The real winner in terms of playing time should be Austin Daye, but Q's dislike for him probably means it's more PT for Chris Wilcox and Will Bynum.

I like this trade for all sides. Detroit gets a huge lift by getting rid of Rip's contract, gaining Murphy's expiring, and potentially gaining a first round pick IF they get stuck keeping Petro. It's looking like New Jersey is going to get another team involved so Detroit doesn't have to take Petro. Murphy will be valuable for the Pistons, how he'll fit into the rotation I don't know, but he's still a rotation big man who can rebound and score a little bit with range.

Denver gets their haul of youth, draft picks, and players. I'm not sure that the package is that strong though; Favors is a gem, Harris is solid but I don't know how the Harris-Lawson PG duo would work for them. Morrow is a solid shooter, but not much more, and the picks should prove valuable whenever they end up coming into the picture.

Nets get their man and they get two veterans that know how to win. I think Chauncey will stay, rumor has it New Jersey is willing to pick up his $14 mil option next year-- he'd be dumb to turn down money like that. I'm not sure why Carmelo wants to play with Rip though, I guess Rip is a secondary scorer who doesn't need the ball in his hands all the tiem to score, that'll help take pressure off Carmelo.

I don't think the Nets are a contender though. Their big men are Brook Lopez, who apparently forgot how to rebound, Shelden Williams, who can rebound and would be a nice bench big, Kris Humphries, the white-more-athletic version of Williams and that's it.

Seems the Nets are trying to give incentive to change his mind:

Billups would prefer to stay in Denver, but to make him more comfortable about the trade, the Nets are expected to commit to paying him the full $14.2 million he’s due next season in the final year of his contract rather than buying him out for just $3.7 million this summer, league sources told Y! Sports’ Marc Spears. Billups’ agent, Andy Miller, had said Saturday that his client would immediately seek a buyout if he wasn’t happy with the trade.

It remains to be seen if that'll sway him.

He probably wouldn't re-sign with the Nets. I really do have this funny feeling that he'll be the Knick via off-season. But then Denver just wouldn't just let him walk, would they?

He said a trade wasn't imminent, he didn't say the talks weren't happening or that a trade wasn't possible. It's not uncommon for players to downplay trade talk until a deal is in place and announced.

Is that really breaking news? Those reports have been coming since yesterday, indeed there's a link to one in this very thread.

Denver doesn't have a choice if he wants to go to NY so badly. The Knicks would be stupid to agree to a trade when they can pick him up for nothing in the off-season, other teams won't trade for him if they know he won't re-sign.
