NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony has told the Denver Nuggets he will not sign the nearly $65 million contract extension he has been offered unless he is traded to the New York Knicks, a source told ESPN.com on Sunday.
...
And while other franchises might be able to make better offers, Anthony will not agree to sign anywhere long-term unless he is dealt to New York, according to the source, who has been privy to private discussions between Anthony, his representatives and the Nuggets organization.
The source spoke to ESPN.com after Denver's 129-125 loss to New York on Sunday afternoon as the Knicks won their eighth straight game.
Asked in an interview with FanHouse if he believes a deal is imminent, Anthony said, "No.''
Anthony, who has yet to sign a three-year, $64.47 million extension that is on the table and can become a free agent next summer, was back in Denver after scoring 31 points Sunday against the Knicks, the team many believe he wants to join. ESPN.com reported after the Knicks' 129-125 win at Madison Square Garden that Anthony has told the Nuggets he only would sign the extension if traded to New York .
But Anthony emphatically denied that report.
"No,'' Anthony said when asked if there's any truth to it. "I haven't talked to Masai (Ujiri, the Nuggets executive vice president of basketball operations) about who I would sign an extension with, and who I want to sign with. I've never had that conversation.''
The Nets and Nuggets are working towards a complicated multi-team trade proposal that would send Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.
Anthony is expected to accept a contract extension with the Nets following a trade if the team is able to bring back a package of significant talent with him, according to league sources.
So far, packages include some of Anthony's Denver teammates -- including Al Harrington.
"The way this is structured now, the Nets will significantly upgrade their team," said one league executive.
The other teams involved in the talks aren't yet known.
Currently, the Nets are preparing to send Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, two or three first-round picks and $3 million to the Nuggets for Anthony and Harrington. More players from both sides would likely be involved.
According to a source, Brook Lopez is the only player the Nets haven't involved in any scenario.
No deal is imminent, but sources involved in the talks believe that early January is a realistic target.

Oh, and we knew of that possible deal way back in like June.
