I was going to make this thread.
Anyways I have different 'moves' for different situation. I'm 5'10" and fat, so I'm not super atheletic or anything. Driving in and finishing strong is NOT my thing. I'll never outrun anyone (even though I'm very fast and can jump very high for someone my weight.)
1. Smaller defender (yes I've played many games where I've had someone 5'5 - 5'8' and 30 pounds less guarding me) - I post up and have a very excellent fade away that I can hit from up to 18 feet out consistently. I've even made a couple of fade-away 3's over them, it's just comes natural to me and usually makes them put a bigger defender on me. I try not to post up about 10-12 feet away though, thats my comfort zone.
2. If I by chance get the first step and there is a bigger defender on front of me, I excel at floaters. Kind of like a Nash type floater, except I can use both hands very well. I really never take lay-ups unless I have an open lane to the basket, but if someone is headed to block me I usually mess up the lay-up and go to hard or to soft, basically I alter my shot. It's something I need to work on.
3. When I don't have the ball, I try to run around a lot and get open for a corner 3 point shot. I can sink those all day. Earlier this year I started sinking 3's like there's no tomorrow. Me and my friend did a 3 point shootout at the gym (kind of like the NBA, except one of us rebounded one ball, and there was no time.) and I hit 14/25 3 times, and got atleast 10/25 every single time I did the shootout. Might not be perfect, but for someone who doesn't play organized ball and stuff, not bad. I also hit 28 straight mid-range jumpers in one shoot around. I also made 8/25 three's with my left hand.
4. I also have a pretty decent step-back jumper, I need to work on it though before I use it consistently in a game. As of now I try to limit it.
5. My go to 'assist' move is either the pick and roll with a bigger player who can finish, or driving in and drawing the defenders, and normally doing a wrap-around pass to someone under the basket. With the pick and roll, I throw the perfect little lobs inside to my teamate, and unless there is help under the basket its an automatic score. If that doesn't work out, the pick normally creates enough seperation for me to take a quick jumpshot (which I've mastered.) As for driving under the basket, people hardly figure out that I won't take the lay-up inside, they always fall for me going up in the air, and that leaves someone open.
6. I also utilize bank shot's a lot. If I do take lay-ups it'll probably be with my left hand. I am better making lay-ups with my off hand then my right hand ever since I destroyed my wrist 5 years ago.
Sometimes I wonder how my game would be affected if I lost all this weight again. If it would benefit my game or hurt it. I've gotten so used to playing fat the last few years that my whole game plan is built around it. Surprisingly at my weight I'm about 6-8 inches away from grabbing the rim. But my post-up game is seriously one of my best scoring methods. I can easily hit the bottom-front of the backboard when I jump. I haven't played since I've been losing weight so I don't know how it'll change my game.
