When I first tried DirectIP with a friend, I host because i have better rosters. But it could never connect... then for the hell of it I tried turning of XP firewall, and it worked. Could that be the problem?

Well, it depends if its a shitty 56k or a good one ;)
I think it will run ok, nba runs better than last year online

I don't know I guess you could say it's average. I download my files in a about 4-5kb/sec. It's higher in the beginnning but it lowers all the time. Anyway can I play against someone that has the EA update if I haven't installed mine yet??

I believe the readme for Live has information on which ports need to be open in your firewall. Ah, here it is:

d. Firewalls
Note that if you have a firewall and want to play online, the following
TCP/IP ports must be open in the outbound direction:
HTTP 80 TCP/IP
HTTPS 443 TCP/IP
MsgConn/IM 13500 TCP/IP
Roomsvr 24801-24809 TCP/IP

The following UDP ports must be opened for game packets for the outbound
and inbound connections:
Game Packets 3658 UDP
